Making Useful Tools In The Woods From Natural Materials

- Lonnie shows in this video how to make two different styles of mauls or hammers from natural materials found in the woods. These mauls are useful for driving tent stakes or other stakes into the ground when camping. These mauls are also useful for driving wedges into logs to split them in order to make useful camp furniture. These mauls can also be used to drive a precisely placed hatchet into wood to enable accurately positioned ax work on projects.

I swear, every time I see your dog in a video my heart starts skipping and I want to yell out "watch out for the bear!" Then I realize its just your big beautiful dog. Gets me every time!

I made a couple of the second kind of maul with a downed red oak that was across a bike trail I was riding on. I batoned the handles down a bit then carved them with my knife for comfort. Cleared the trail and made something cool :)
Always loving the pace of your videos. Many bushcrafters rush things or cut up their video so that people who don't pay attention still get the information, but your videos are always chilled, laid back and not rushed at all. A nice change and opportunity to get some of that calm in my mind as well ;)

If you want to make sure you're sawing straight around the log tie a string around where you'd like to make your handle and cut to the string.
There's something about Alaska, and the North in general, that makes me want to pack up and move there. Being a mountain town guy myself from a kid, I've always been drawn to the peace and majesty of the coniferous forests.

Tools like this are also handy for cabin building, bear fence posts, splitting wood with wooden wedges, etc. The list goes on. Why carry something you can make? Thanks for sharing with us.

Its a pleasure to watch. I like the fact that's its not just another one of those string up a tarp and gather firewood videos.
There is a longevity to this style of bush craft, a means to make a situation more comfortable when out in the wilderness.
Being able to manufacturer simple but effective tools would certainty lift your spirits in a survival situation, or a long spell camping.

Am I the only one to cut wonderful "spirals" when I try to cut around a log? LOL. My grandmother told me wood warms you 3 times, once when you cut the tree once when you work the logs and the 3rd time when you burn it. Bless her wisdom I do miss her now

Nice one my friend! A good stout camp mallet is one of the first things i like to make when I set up basecamp! And it is a fun project to do with young folks, or people new to the woods. Hope your spring is going well.

That Newfie sure has your back, looks alot like my Newf. I love taking my dog on little bushcraft outings.
I have owned a newfoundland mix and liked the dog very much. This dog "Buck" however is half mixed lab and half Bouvier Des Flandres. Buck is indeed a great watch dog.

I once visited a neighbor (an old farmer who was fairly poor) who was cutting down a large tree. He drove in a wedge with a maul like your first one (but with a longer handle). I asked a stupid question: "Hey Wendall, did you make that maul?" He answered, "Do you think I bought it at Sears and Roebuck?" I thought it was ingenious!
