Honestly, I believe that the rule about "must originate from a video game" is a necessary aspect for the series to retain basic credibility, so that one being broken would only happen after the shark was jumped.
The rule about "must have appeared on a Nintendo console" though, _that_ rule I expect to be broken at some point... though quickly followed by a non-Smash appearance to balance things back out.

I maybe wrong here but wasn't Sephiroth first appearance on a Nintendo platform Theatrhythm Final Fantasy on the 3ds same with Cloud? Also that mean in the next Smash Game Aloy from Horizon is eligible lol. And Shantae has a chance. Lol

I looked and you are indeed correct on Sephiroth, though Cloud would still be Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories on GBA. I wonder why I couldn't find that Theatrhythm info when I was searching for Sephiroth. And Shantae has always had a chance, and yes, Aloy from Horizon does now too.

Roy's game was supposed to come out before Melee, but it got delayed.
Also, Fatal Fury had an SNES and Genesis port? I thought SNK games were only exclusive to arcades and the NEO GEO?

Roy is a first party character. And yes, Fatal Fury was on the SNES and the Sega Genesis.
