For a younger person I can see those “cons” but for retirees that lack of bar scene and nightlife sounds wonderful. It was fun in my youth but I no longer like putting up with the loud music, fights, drunks, puke and glass on the streets that come with a “vibrant nightlife”.
Thats why the digital nomads who are actually working, go to locations like Chiang Mai or here, while the instagrammers and party people are more likely to be found at other locations ;)
I like Penang. I found much to do. I am an open minded curious friendly person so perhaps this makes a difference. I easily met locals and I found them very responsive. Penang has most everything if you take the time to look
The biggest con for me is that the sea in Penang isn’t appropriate for swimming, as the water is milky and full of jellyfishes. So you can walk the beach and enjoy the view, but can’t swim, which is a bit frustrating.
I enjoy the beach for what it gives to my soul, otherwise my pool that comes free with my flat, is just fine. For me that is just fine to do so - because then I can seperate fun from work weeks. That means, if I get into the bus, its vacation time, laptop stays in the backpack, just holiday. I do such holidays every three months *cough cough* :) it works great for me.
As an expat longterm resident in Penang I would say that this is the most inaccurate review I have read about the island and its people. However, I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but please don't let this video put you off visiting this wonderful location.
Yes we all have our own opinion and for the record I do recommend visiting Penang and decide for yourself if it is a place you would like to stay for long-term
Hey, i am planing to move to Penang in the next two months. Would you maybe describe where the inaccurates where in the Videos? The Time i stayed there i had no problems with connecting with the locals but regarding Night life i had a really hard time finding clubs that werent completely empty or closed.
Malaysia is an islamic country. Of course there isnt much night life like drinking, clubbing, discos, nightclubs or casinos. If youre looking for those entertainment, i suggest you go to philippines thailand or hk.
Jeez, the comments... Chill guys ! His opinion ! As a Penang kia myself... We locals know where the night life places are, where the cheap food and accommodations are... hidden non-tourist places... We all know that Georgetown/Gurney has become a tourist place and naturally, they're gonna be more expensive... But rilek la with the comments. Instead of attacking, why not we educate, instead ?
I live in Penang, and I don't think he has been many places around in Penang before making this conclusion, the information is completely inaccurate. There are plenty of night life in Batu Ferringhi and Georgetown area. If you are looking for hanky pinky stuffs, go to Thailand. As to how difficult to mingle with local people, it's all depends on you. We don't normally offer strangers to your house, unless we know you enough, right? Does this applies to you in your homeland?
Dear sir! I used to visit Penang a number of times in the late 80s and early 90s. I just loved the food and the atmosphere there. I have normally only stayed in Thailand, but like to change a little by staying 1 or 2 months in Penang before moving to Thailand for 2 or 3 months and then back to Norway for the summer! What I like to know is how much to pay for something like a guesthouse or a smaller apartment for 1 month or two. I'll be happy for any info on the matter! I do not need to stay in the middle of Georgetown!
I'm in love with a girl who is living in penang.I just wish this pandemic to end soon so I could Come there.I'm from Nepal actually. Penang would be the first place I'll be visiting after this pandemic.
@@digitalnomadworld If you really need to have party on Penang, go to M2 or MOIS Club.. But to be honest I am happy that Penang has so little night life - at least in the meaning that most asia-visiting, westerners see as nightlife.
For your info...award winning malaysian whiskey is called timah. Who said beers are not manufactured here? Carlsberg has a factory here and Guinness stout as well. However some like tiger beers.
The Cons I hear here, are only cons for young people (or personst who try hard to be 20 forever) who get here after study, or people who start being digital nomads and try to live the life they are seeing. For digital nomads who actually work and earn money and doing something, some of the cons are even pros.
I think you need to be willing to be friendly and mingle around to get to know the locals. To say that the locals like to keep to themselves is not an accurate statement.
You obviously didnt visit Burma Road or at the end of Penang Road that we call Little Penang Road as both have Night Clubs and KTV Bars, and its Love Lane and NOT Lovers Lane. Love Lane as a lot of Bars for the flashpackers group as well as Guest Houses for them, bunk beds etc. I lived in Penang for years but now its way too busy for me.

Check out "The Expat" videos. Anyway Penang along with Singapore and Malacca are world reknown places. Penang has always been known as the Pearl of the Orient. That title was not for Hong Kong nor bali nor philippines.
Interesting video. and great points for us considering to move to Malaysia one day. I would like to hear more about expats pros since people willing to move to Malaysia are either doing it for work (young) or retirees looking for a safe and comfortable life. your thoughts about that?
well it's a lot of heritage buildings so naturally you're not going to have the most comfortable stay. Gurney is a good area, but some people enjoyed their time staying in gtown. your choice
@@digitalnomadworld We just want to find a nice high rise building with a view and amenities for around $600-$800 a month for a vacation. We love history and culture as well as food but do like to have a nice dinner, massage and manicure for the wife.

If you spend hours per day working(work space) and not interacting more, then there is no networking with expats or locals. In penang, expats DO get together and socialise, i hv seen their vlogs. To interact with locals, i must say the japanese are on top of the act, next are the korean vloggers. You can learn from their vloggers. Like Aki, Kaz, saki chan, kouji aka wasabi laksa, sunami (aya), jalan jalan jesse (korean), blimey (korean). How they do it? well they went out to the villages or towns , do some activities with them. Of course they spoke some bahasa too besides using english. They visited night markets, wet markets, bazaar ramadhan. That is how they interact and make friends with locals. To interact with locals you need a bit of language skill and pr skill and a bit proactive approach (thick skin).
