- You might be surprised to know that your bank’s Automated Teller Machines (ATMs, also known as Cash Machine) have been around since 1960.
These convenient money-dispensing devices have a fascinating history, partially because they did not simply have one inventor. Instead, today’s ATMs came about as the work of a combination of inventions. What were these inventions and who were they made by?
This piece of finance history is as interesting as it is complicated.

In 1967, a Scottish inventor named John Shepherd-Barron was sitting in the bathtub when he had a flash of genius: If vending machines could dispense chocolate bars, why couldn’t they dispense cash?
