  • I got lucky over the weekending scoring some pretty good deals. This made me think, "why don't I tell you all what I do to find decent used gear prices"? I always check out the HRO used gear area first, but there are other things I recomend as well!
    Sites I recommend:

    What's awesome is when you live 30 minutes away from Universal Radio and can peruse the used section in person! ;) 73, KA8GPM

    I feel I did fairly well picking up a used modded IC-718.
    The original owner lovingly documented everything which was a big plus.

    Universal Radio is a great place for used and new gear.

    Very good information. with eBay, you have to check out the seller first. QRZ might be a better alternative. Universal and HRO might be good, especially if you can "try before you buy".

    The best place to buy used ham gear hands down, is ham fests, which, as a stater eliminates shipping.
    Then you must take your Elmer with you, because hopefully they will know what questions to ask, what to look for, know if the seller is BSing you or even knows what they are selling and finally if the price is right.
    Lastly, negotiate the best deal you can because someone is going to probably going to have to put some labor and parts into the radio to get it working properly.
    If you can't find it at a ham fest -- then I would start looking online or at retail dealers, etc. but you will probably be paying top dollar and again have to pay shipping, unless you negotiate a good deal or someone is truely desperate.

    Hamfests are still my favorite spot for buying used. It gives me the chance to give the item the 'smell test' to see if it was abused or in the home of a smoker. One tool I find real handy for shopping used is eBay's completed & sold item search. This gives you a rough idea of what the market price is for something.

    Not ham gear (could be maybe?) but I have found a lot of old wifi gear at thrift stores. If you re-task a router as a bridge/access point/wifi extender, it's a cheap hardware source.

    I got a good deal on a used TM-D72a from Universal, however when received, the battery was obviously damaged and held no charge. Universal sent me a brand new replacement battery at no charge. 👍👍

    The only "negative" thing I can say about some of the folks that do estate buys, is that they can take advantage of the family of an SK, low balling the value of the goods, only to turn it around for a lot more. A good deal for the buyer, but sometimes preying on the estate. Not all the time, just something to be aware of.

    Is it normal to find "used" gear almost the same price as new?

    • @chriscoel
      @chriscoel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can be all too common.. esp from private sellers, if you go through someone like HRO, Universal radio, etc they are more normal priced.

    When used is typically the same price as retail, there really is no use. Personal sales are typically 5% below retail to 25% above retail (how that works I have no idea), and online sources like HRO is usually 3-5% below retail which is just not worth it.

    • @HamRadioCrashCourse
      @HamRadioCrashCourse  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is kind of what hunting for a deal is all about. If the price isn't worth the risk, don't buy it. In my case, that tuner was a great deal at the HRO.
