    Great insights. Funny for me as a Dutch person is that we do have institutions where you can go anonymously to test your drugs. For example if a Dutch person would want to test what chems are in his/her xtc, he can just go to a special institute and test one of the pills. He/she can get the results and just check if it's save. The funny part is that possession of drugs is illegal, taking it isn't.

      He is correct. This drug is like alcohol in a lot of ways. There are folks that should not do alcohol and there are folks that should not do cocaine. I have done cocaine off and on for 44 years with not major consequences. The last time I used it was 11 months ago. It is not something i wish to do everyday or a few times a week like alcohol. I do it when it is convenient and when it is available in high quality. I'm sure there are many folks like me, but due to the stigma, we don't shout about it. The Dr is correct.

    Being a recovering addict of 12 years myself i can tell you that there are many people who lose control as soon as this drug inters there system, this is why NA programs and many doctors call addiction a disease. I do agree that we should be able to put anything we want in our bodies and better support systems instead of locking them up.

    • @paleemperor5379
      @paleemperor5379 3 ปีที่แล้ว +190

      Drug addiction being a "disease" as in something you have no control over is nonsense propaganda made up by AA and NA to make people religious. I'm an ex-addict and i was shocked by the garbage they spout in NA and AA, basically telling people they're weak and powerless victims of an uncontrollable disease that is out to get them at any moment and that the only way they can recover is to accept a "higher power". It was incredibly sad seeing people who had been sober for decades and they still went to NA every single day, probably because they've been convinced that they're weak and they're going to immediately fail and relapse if they stop going. And i'm not surprised if they really feel like hopeless addicts if they spend every day talking about how hopelessly addicted they are and how every day is a struggle, even after being sober for years. They're never going to recover and get over it if they wallow in it every single day instead of finding something else to think about. Many addicts have experienced so much shit and struggle that they're probably stronger people mentally than the average person, so they should be taught that they're not powerless, and that they are in control and they're the only ones who can change their lives for the better, not some mystical higher power or some borderline cult organization like NA.

      @ProfX the point I’m making is that the Carl Hart is a doctor who administers drugs under controlled settings and understands the effects that it has on the brain. Under controlled settings you are able to control the variables.
      The person who wrote the comment isn’t qualified to speak on it. He’s merely giving an anecdote. What he was taking was not under controlled settings, he has no idea what adulterants where in his supply and he has no idea what the variables were which led to his 12 year addiction.
      That’s the main difference.

    I think the problem with substances of any type is people's lack of self control.

    • @skyblue9991
      @skyblue9991 3 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      That becomes a problem because these substances can literally change neural pathways in the brain. Where you once had discipline... you now can't tell yourself "No". This is how powerful addiction is. It completely takes over. The "choice" of whether to participate or not is virtually removed.
      Imagine this... what level of discipline would you need to tell yourself to stop breathing? Its possible in principle but impossible in practice. You'd always gasp for air at the last second... This is what real addiction is like for a lot of people.
      For a lot of people... drugs are their air.

      As Dr Gabor Mate, an addiction and trauma specialist says, it's not the drug in itself that's addictive, it's the trauma inside, the emotions you are trying to bury.
      Anything can be addictive. Exercise, food, working too much, collecting things, spending money. Anything to put you outside yourself and bury emotions.
      Many people eat everyday and don't get addicted. Many people exercise and don't get addicted to it, just like many people smoke cannabis and do not get addicted, etc

I truly believe it helps a lot of folks but for me it all of the sudden turned into a 2nd voice in my head ( no not literally ) but my own self showing me a list of things I’ve done wrong. This is detailed, but you might find it informative:
      🔹From a Sociologist's Perspective:
      The greater point on the D subject is:
      🔺The current System makes the substances:
      1) way more expensive
      2) way more dangerous
      🔺The System Created:
      1) an entire Industry and subculture consist8ng of Drug Mob Guys, and the DEA Anti D Mob Guys
      2) Appx 65% of the Cases overwhelming the Courts
      3) Appx 75% of the Inmates in the Prison System
      An estimated only 1 in 15 opt for Treatment:
      1) Due to Social fears of being Judged and Labeled (opposite of Alcohol Treatment, because it is Legal)
      2) Sociologists are unable to accurately estimate the literal Costs of the: "System"; "War on Drugs"; and Social/Family and Children/Employment/Emotional/Physical/Financia = the true impact these suffer due to "The 1980's Regean/Bush Administration's 'War on Drugs' System" has influenced upon this Nation.
      The Bush, Jr Administration further exacerbated the System's Negative impacts upon the Nation and Public by "Authorizing the DEA to enter the Physician's Patient Medical Files" and "the Pharmacy's Patient Files," (a complete Breech of Patient Confidentialit, ⭐Breech of Privacy, ⭐Breech of Civil Liberties, ⭐Breech of the Constitution and anything that represents INDEPENDENCE and FREEDOM, or a Republic and Democracy)
      They may do this at will.
      This has caused an entire Patient Population to submit to a 🔺Dictatorial Drug Policy causing countless situations of Patients feeling Violated andvtreated a Criminal.
      🔺Patients are forced to Submit to Drug Screens, many rural Patients must Travel to Particular Specialists (some drive 50 - 100 or more miles, Monthly) and incur all the Additional Costs,
      ⭐This was forced upon the Country right along side the Recording all Private Calls and an Inland Security System that fully ignores the Constitution, and while calling for "Military to bring war against Iraq for their Weapons of Mass Destruction and Dictatorial System,"
      ... "We were to Teach them Democracy"
      Nothing about "Warring Against" will ever result in Achieving of Peace, Harmony, Happiness, or Wellbeing.
      They understand the Fundamental Laws of Physics and the "Universal Law of Attraction", they know when they design a System to Fail the Publuc and Profit the 1% Owners.
      We have the Power to Enforce Our Constitution and to Establish Peace and Harmony, no Wars Required, just exercising the Legislative System.
      The System of Northern Europe, in Sweden, Holland, Denmark ... That's how Higher Minded folks establish a desirable System for the subject.

    When you lose your grip on life for a moment the drugs can create a cushioned warm place to fall into. It’s not easy getting back up and struggle to hold on again when you could just rest in this warm embrace. That’s when you atrophy. You get so used to to not having to hold on anymore and the strength you developed slips away. Now you can’t hold on and you’re dependent on what’s holding you up to survive. The drugs.

      My friends and I all used drugs in the past and 99% of us were never addicted and we are all functional members of society.
      Even addicted people can be fully functional if we give them legal product and dont criminally charge them and stigmatize them.
      The reason drugs make people fked up is mostly bcs of stupid laws and criminal cycle people get themself into after being criminally persecuted.

      @James Prime yeah, i mean, the only reason why it might seem that you can not do drugs and be responsible member of society, is bcs of drug criminalization and social pressure drug users experience...
      So if you are heroin or cocaine user, or heroin, cocaine addict, of course you will have hard time functioning in society where people and law put pressure onto you and criminalize and stigmatize you. Especially in america...
      In Switzarland heroin addicts are functional, have jobs and good connections to families, and are responsible... Why? Bcs society accepts them, and do not discard them for their drug use.
      In america, heroin users are rejected by society, left alone, criminalized... So of course they have hard time functioning, and they need to do bad stuff to support their drug habbit....
      So drug war and social unacceptence enhances addiction, and gets people sucked into never ending miserable cycle..

He never once mentioned the neurological aspect to cocaine or heroin addiction and just blamed it all on people’s stuff, I’ve tried both and the first thing that goes through your mind is “more” your brain wants more and yeah if you have shit going on then you probably are more likely to do more but some of these drugs are physically addictive and it seems he has a real blind spot there

    “Why would you arrest people for putting something in their body?”
    Well, as long as you make producing and selling it illegal it automatically leads to criminal organizations taking up that role. And these can be brutal.
    So now you also have a moral responsibility: this guy when talking about going to the source in Colombia and getting a quality product is not telling you about the millions of people in that country that live with horrific cartels because of the vast market demand for this product

    This guy seems to really focus a lot on the good, and none of the bad. It's one thing to understand the biochemistry, neuoropsychology and so forth in terms of why drugs make people feel good temporarily when people are using. The problem is the long term effects on the users body (cardiac, liver, dental, nerve damage, etc.) which are extremely costly and time consuming to manage and they will never be "normal" again. There is also the mental and social destruction to not only the user, but those around them. You're essentially releasing "fake" happiness into you body, at completely unrealistic levels ("high"). You think you're having the time of your life, even if you're doing nothing satisfactory or useful (other than the drug itself), while your family sits at home wondering where you are. When the high goes away, you're left feeling empty- you're body is depleted and resistant to the neurotransmitters that made you feel this way (all ARTIFICIALLY released by the drug- it's fake). Regular things that would make you happy no longer do. You're left chasing that high- and overtime you'll even become resistant to the drug itself. After this goes on for a period of time, you get to go back to an empty home or a family that no longer wants you around because you've left them twisting in the wind. You're no longer trustworthy- you've told endless lies by now. You are unable to feel happiness like you did before. You don't even know who you are anymore. Many of your "old" friends don't even know who you are anymore. You have plenty of "new" friends- all fighting the same battle you know find yourself in. Everyday one of them has a major crisis on their hands (perceived or real)- and their crisis are the "glue" that seems to hold you all together, the feeling of companionship and understanding through the chaos that surrounds you all. You're lucky to still have a career- if you even have that anymore or ever did to begin with. You've made a lot of bad decisions while riding the high that has left you with physical or emotional damage (relationships, injuries, health concerns, etc.) You are probably in financial ruin as well, unless you are extremely wealthy. It's not all unicorns and rainbows. This doesn't happen to every user, but enough of them that it's at least worth mentioning. If I told you there was a 10% chance you'd end up like this, would you think twice about taking the drugs to begin with? This guy seems to be oblivious to that.

Most of the people I knew from back then are also dead. The ones that are alive and partook in the drug scene are in terrible health. So sure, maybe you know some rich people that have managed to keep themselves alive and in somewhat decent health (but the truth is, you're not their physician, and you can only tell so much by looking at them). But for those of us that aren't heirs to millions (which is 99% of the population), drug addiction is not pretty. But think of it how you like. That's your choice.

    Watched this whole episode. The way he acts like opioids aren’t very addictive completely discredits everything he says to me. And I’m someone who is in favor of decriminalizing all drugs. I’ve seen opioid addiction first hand with family and friends. It completely changes a person and their motives. A formerly good person will rob his grandma blind. They lose themselves. I’ve struggled with addiction myself but luckily avoided opioids but even from what I experienced you completely lose sight of anything but the drugs and your next high. He also says how these people overdosing use alcohol just as much or more and that’s false. When someone is shooting heroin they don’t waste their money on any other substance. Addiction will always exist but most people who are happy don't become addicted. Making drugs illegal doesn't help the unhappy and addicted if anything it makes them even more isolated.

    • @yunggoosbumps215
      @yunggoosbumps215 3 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      You're not understanding his argument. His argument is that addiction to drugs is not significant as we have been led to believe by the media. Majority of drugs users in the 80-90% range are moderate occassional users. Look at people using alcohol and tell me your perspective is that it causes a lot of alcoholics or if most adults can handle themselves and moderate their use?

    • @bellabear653
      @bellabear653 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@yunggoosbumps215 exactly. Addiction normally comes up as there is a genetic link or depression and trauma is involved. A lot of people if they are happy can use any substance and walk away from it just as quickly. I think the "rat park experiment" shows this best, as before this scientists only put rats in cages with nothing but drugs to take, of course you will take the drug if there is nothing else to do and become addicted.

    As someone who has suffered from addiction I totally agree with what the doctor was saying. If drugs were legal or if people could do their drugs without the fear of being arrested and they could submit their drugs to be tested this would reduce the amount of overdoses greatly. Clean needle programs are very effective. I have been clean now for 8 months and I don't plan on going back atleast until they are legalized and the stigma around them changes.
