  • I ventured out Bensenville and Franklin Park with a fellow railfan friend the weekend after Thanksgiving, and caught several trains with satisfying variety. There were also two ex-Milwaukee Road "bandits" switching Bensenville Yard, which were out of camera range the whole time! Very frustrating. Oh well- here is what we caught:
    Train 1:
Canadian Pacific ES44AC #8776 and CEFX AC4400 #1045 roll down the New Line-Bensenville connector at Tower B-17 with an autorack train. The view is partly obscured because I was walking from the Metra station a couple blocks away.
    Train 2:
Canadian Pacific's train 272, the Chicago/Bensenville to Nahant, Iowa manifest, gets going out of Bensenville Yard with a four-pack of SD40-2s. Number 6078, ex-CP Rail, later DM&E, leads. IC&E 6405, the 'City of Alpha' is next, followed by CP 5872 and ex-CP/IC&E 6214. Some brand-new UP autoracks are at the rear of the train.
    Train 3:
Up on Union Pacific's realigned "New Line" (the "Newer Line"?), an empty coal shuttle from Wisconsin moves southward. AC4400 #7210 and AC44/60CW #7044 are up front, with AC4400 #5593 shoving (maybe a little too hard, judging by the strange whining sounds... the turbo? Traction motors?) as the DPU.
    Train 4:
CP ES44AC #8882 and AC4400 #8521 bypass the yard and head north past B-17 with a unit oil train.
    Train 5:
Soo Line GP38-2s #4417, 4415 (repainted in CP colors) and CP GP40 #4613 (originally a Milwaukee Road unit) haul seven cars westward on the CP Elgin Sub toward the interchange with CN's EJ&E at Spaulding Junction.
    Train 6:
Metra Milwaukee District West Line train #2716 meets the Spaulding Local just west of the Bensenville station, then makes its stop. Budd-built bilevel #8225, a former Milwaukee Road car, is also a former cab car, one of several that still retains its front striping, cab windows and mini pilot.
    Train 7:
CSX C40-8W #7380 and SD60M #8785, both ex-Conrail units, lug a transfer freight out of the east end of Bensenville Yard at Franklin Park, and head through the B-12 interlocking onto the northernmost end of the Indiana Harbor Belt main line.
    ~Thanks for watching!~
