Some self-professed cat language expert says cat does not understand 'meow'. Whenever I meow at the cat which lives at the void deck below my block, it turns its head like, "Yes?". And if I have food, it will come to me.
This may sound weird, but, everyone in our house talks to our cat constantly. She loves being included & rewards us with plenty of head bumps, ‘grooming’ us & churttles.
I think some cats totally enjoy human attempts at meowing. I dont think we speak quite the same language as our cats but they know we trying to show love and to connect with them
That makes sense to me. I think that cats must understand that meowing connects to them because it at least mimics their sound and typical high-low-high tonal sound. And an experienced cat around humans would know that humans do not meow at each other. Therefore one would think they learn to associate human meows as a form of attention towards them. I know if any of my cats ever came up to me and asked me "how's it going Jim?" in a close proximity to human voice, well that would certainly have my attention! If the attention they get from us after our meowing at them is normally positive, I think they would come to enjoy the meows.
I agree. My cat meows at me and I meow back, and he comes over. My cat is not my “pet” or my “baby” and I don’t “own” him just because I gave money to an adoption agency to help them with their expenses. He is my friend and roommate.
On Monday morning I said to my cat. See you tonight, she nodded her head twice and winked. My cat is highly intelligent and her sense of humour it is amazing. She is a brilliant companion.
My cat meows at me? She wants my attention. I meow at her? She knows I WANT her attention. Especially when I use the same inflections she does meowing!
I once closed a nook my cat liked. When I got home the next day my cat meet me at the door, walked me to the place of my offence and made clear what I had to do! If it would have started talking I would not have been suprised in the least!
My outside cat always talks to me and when I pick her up and hold her with her paws over my shoulder I whisper to her and she nuzzles my face and just purrs and purrs❤❤❤
I can identify some meanings in my adult cat's meowings: hello ; wake up ; the food bowl is empty ; where are you? ; may I sit in your lap? He also has gestures, for example 'Take me in your arms' (paws on my chest or shoulder) is different from 'Pet me' (one paw on my arm). Or he jumpes on the kitchentable and points to the surface, in order that I give him treats. Sometimes he smells politely my plate, but knows how to eye signal "I am tempted" and waits gently until I cut some for him to taste. When cuddling, I use the same words or sentences. "Moi aussi je t'aime (Me too I love you)" is one he recognizes and purrs to. His younger female companion understands "Are you my fiancée?" as a message of love and comes getting a caress.
Cats understand more words than studies give them credit for. One of ours needed ear drops and didn't like having them. She would hide when she heard us talking about 'ears', knowing the ear drops would be coming out next.
I hug and kiss my cat every day and have many conversations with him. He was adopted. He seems to really love his home and appreciate it. I can see it in his eyes. He is super affectionate loves belly rubs.
I always talk to my cats , they're the best listeners , when I lived in New York I would run down the wooden hallway floor in my socks and slide into the kitchen and my cats would get the weirdest looks on their faces like " what in the world is she doing ? " your can almost tell what they are thinking , it's hilarious !
I speak as I feel to my cat to let him understand me. And my cat expects me to lift him up and get kisses & give me kisses when either me or him comes home. He speaks as well to get my attention or tell me what he wants. He will always kiss me on my nose when i give him wet food and lift his head up to get a kiss back (he always has dry food avaliable). And if he hears me he'll always come inside when I call him.
I talk to Nocturne all the time. He responds by stretching and showing his belly. He slow blinks and is my buddy. My son is his favorite but he's in the Navy now.⚓🇺🇲 🐈⬛
Yeah, my cat is almost 21, and he still doesn’t want to be hugged tightly against my body. It’s true, cats like affection on their terms. When I lie down, my cat will snuggle up for hours. But there’s no bringing him in for a snuggle. Luckily, on his terms, he’s almost always up for a cuddle, unless it’s too hot or his stomach is upset.
Two of our 3 cats love having their belly stroked & purposely come to us & flop down then roll onto their backs as an invitation, then just lie there stretching & purring while we do but the other cat we have hates it & will go into war mode if its tried but she is by far the most vocal of the 3 too & regularly has long chats with us.
Tone is general key with treating animals. No animal likes it noisy. It doesn't matter if we talk about loud music, the noise of busy construction side, a loud vacuum cleaner or someone yelling at them.
My cat comes on walks with me and meows to alert presence if feeling uncertain about being in room that has nice furniture because I've yelled when clawing happened. A smart cat that understands the words hungry and outside 😊
I remember watching a sweet little old lady talk to her cat. I thought, that poor girl probably thinks the cat understands what she's saying. When I got home and told my dog we had such a laugh.
My cat LOVES kisses. She'll shove her head against my face for them and she'll recognize when i ask her "Gimme kiss?" Same with hugs, she crawls into my arms and I'll hold her and fall asleep
My cats know their names (when it suits them ofc) and the word "dinner", they also get scared if my boyfriend sings the halo theme song for some reason 😂
During a three day snow storm, I decided I was going to learn “edge of seventeen” for karaoke that next Saturday. You know that death stare you get when you startle a cat out of their cat nap? Multiply that times four! I’m telling you, I’m lucky to be alive! But I nailed it! My cats start demanding their dinner usually about 10-15 minutes before the alarm goes off. One cat would come and stare at me exactly 10 minutes before his dinner time. No meowing. Just stares…. I wasn’t sure if he was just reminding should the alarm not go off or plotting my death if I should be late. 😂
Funny story: Years ago, we had an orange tabby cat who could be quite mischievous and contrary. One day she approached me and made a long vocalization like, "Mrrwruwrmahmnwrx." The tone sounded defiant and insulting, maybe even threatening. I looked her in the eye and repeated what she had just said to the best of my ability. Her eyes widened, her ears went back, and she ran away.
Our cat likes giving us kisses. She learnt from watching us kiss. When you come in close to her she raises her head to stiff your head then sticks her tongue out and slimes your face. I love it
Cat hearing goes to much higher frequency than human's but doesn't reach as far down into lower frequencies. So what sounds like a pretty good imitation to us might not even be recognisable to them. Same with the way when cats "Chatter" at birds, they think they are mimicking the bird call quite well, but with out different hearing range it's nothing like the same.
Don't talk to your cat like a human , you should have a sweet and happy voice when talking to your cat , cats are sweet and hilarious and you shouldn't ever take them for granted , people need to take a lesson !
One of our cats always responds to his name, answers with a meow and usually comes running. What's more he is trying to imitate human language, dog barks and bird twitters
When I held one of my cats, he liked to wrap one of his front legs around my neck, like we humans do. He also loved to be petted, by being lightly "burped", like we humans do, when holding a baby.
I Have 3 Indoor Kitties Myself 😻😻😻‼️ And Their Name's Are Blizzard Rosie And Coco Kitty! I Love All Three Of My Kitties To Bit's BIG-TIME!!! Sometimes I'll Meow At Them! We Are Very Playful And Affectionate With Each Other Too!✝️✝️🛐🛐😇🌟🤗🙏🙏🙏🇨🇦🇮🇱♾️🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲🗽🦅❤❤❤‼️
Cats understand human speech perfectly. If you can understand what their different sounds mean, you can have an actual conversation with them. Any cat that meows, has the same basic language, and you can communicate with them equally well. This includes mountain lions; the biggest cat that meows (and yes, I've tried it out with them).
My cats are okay with me kissing and hugging them. And they love bellyrubs. So new cat owners, don't think all cats hate bellyrubs. It depends on your cat.
I talk to all my cats. All 35 of them! The barn cats mostly like to keep some distance, but the house cats talk back and head bump me. Good cats! I am working on funding to get them all fixed. People keep giving me stray unfixed cats! 🤔🙄🤷💋😎👵🐺🖖🌵
Cats actually have a way to kiss us. It's just that it seems like they're biting you but it's a gentle bite. Cats can't kiss like humans due to not having lips like us so they 'kiss' us by nipping us. A 'cat kiss'. 😊
My cat likes to slow blink, I say blinky blinky and she does blink. Sometime it takes time for your cat to fully trust you, mine didn't like having her tummy rubbed but now she does, she also lets my touch her legs and paws even the back ones. We adopted her from a cage at a pet store, she was already 18 months old, she is now 8 years old.
I talk to my kids (those furry assholes I love so much). One is a very needy boi and gets mad at me if I don’t wake him up and tell him when I’m going to bed.

"The cat will accept ypur authority" 😂😂😂 everyone who ever owned a cat - especially a female - knows: the only authority for the cat is ... herself That is why we say: humans own dogs, cats own humans
I meowed to my cat many years ago. She looked startled, and then she looked at me like, "Wow! That human knows my language!"
You probably did one or all of the following by mistake:
- Told her you had fleas
- Told her you'd eaten all her food.
- Propositioned her.
@@anonUK😂
@@anonUK ...and with poor cat grammar which reflects badly on your ability to provide anything. Usually, that's the moment someone considers leaving.

We do too. At least a good deal when we get together. And our gray (possibly Russian blue) is quite talkative anyway.

my cat: what did you call my mother?!?
Its the other way round, cats domesticated humans
They certainly enslaved us.
My boy does not seem to care, but my elder girl keeps chetting with me forever. Tons of meow included.
It’s almost like any creature with a brain looks for patterns and is capable of empathy.
