    Love this video! Definitely adding these to my tbr, thank you!! And truly it’s so important to read things that opens our minds to the fact that we see things differently and are shaped by different things. To agree and come together in unity around the essential things and accept we might not agree on everything and that’s okay. I’m quite shocked by some of the comments I have seen on youtube or facebook pages like yours, this is so important!

    Thank you so much for these suggestions of books! I’m going to check them out! Excited for it. Would you have any suggestions for books that are like concordance to accompany the Bible for helping learning more the original language of the Bible such as Hebrew and Greek?

    • @timwildsmith
      @timwildsmith  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance is the one that seems to be the most loved by people. I use it online sometimes.

    Two cool tools are the Commentary on the New Testament Use of the Old Testament edited by Carson and Beale . Also a copy of the LXX to see what was quoted by the apostles is fantastic. It give you a ever so slightly different perspective of the Old Testament and how the early Christian church viewed it .
    Blessings

    Thanks Tim, I thoroughly enjoy your Videos, please keep it up. There's always someone who'll make spiteful comments, whether for who you recommend or for which translation you promote. I really enjoyed the History of the Bible by John Barton which you recommended to me. Just finishing from Tyndale to Today by David Norton, another recommendation from you. Thanks. I'm a big fan of Tom Wright and his work. Darrell Bock has superb Commentaries on Luke (2 Vols) & Acts, printed by Baker, these are fairly academic, but I love them. Loving R L Allan Bibles, but have to confess, I'm spending more time in Schuyler Quentels these days, font size is starting to make it's need apparent! Currently waiting on the "full yapp" ESV Quentel in dark green from Schuyler - mate, it may just about convert me from R L Allan - horror of horrors!! Blessings from New Zealand.

    Great overview Tim. I have the complete series of Preaching the Word commentaries from Crossway - written or edited by R Kent Hughes. Excellent deep dive material to most of the books of the Bible (there are still a few OT books that have not yet been completed). I was a member at College Church in Wheaton in the mid 90s under Pastor Hughes - an excellent pastor and teacher who stays true to the Word!

    Did a course through the bible with Andrew Wilson - his perspective on the patterns we see in scripture was really helpful he has a book on Exodus that he co-authored that summarises some of these. He also has a book on 60 names of God that is coming out and a study through 1 Corinthians that just came out. So many great resources.

    @Tim Wildsmith I started reading How to Read the Bible for All its Worth, and really thought it strange how they pressed the NIV as the BEST translation to be studying from. Then I looked more into Gordon Fee and found that he is on the Committee on Bible Translation which translated the NIV and its revision, so now it makes sense. It also kind of throws the validity of the whole book in flux since he has such an obvious bias towards a specific translation.

    • @timwildsmith
      @timwildsmith  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Michael. I hear what you’re saying, but I’m not sure that I think his bias toward the NIV (which is good to be aware of when reading his thoughts on translation) invalidates the book as a whole.

    • @MichaelRamm
      @MichaelRamm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timwildsmith I get that, and I am not all the way through the book either, so your point may be valid as well. But I find it odd that there is no real mention of the ESV, which has been my preferred translation for the last 5 or so years, as a viable translation for studying the Bible. I totally agree with reading from other translations to see different points of view, and that is what I am trying to do with this book, among other things.
      I would be interested to read his How to Choose a Translation for All its Worth, and see if he (they) stay on the NIV line.
      Thanks for all that you do with your videos, they are awesome and encouraging, and wallet-breaking as well! LOL!

    • @timwildsmith
      @timwildsmith  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MichaelRamm Good point... perhaps there's some sort of unspoken bias against the ESV there (although I have no specific reason to believe that)... I think I'll give that translation book a look and see what I can find out.

    I just bought "What the Bible Is All About" by Dr. Henrietta C. Mears. She was a mentor to Billy Graham & Bill Bright. I'm really looking forward to reading her take on the Bible.

    I don't know whether you've read it, but "God's Secretaries" is an account of the development of the Authorized/'King James' translation. The gravity and religious devotion these men gave to that translation is a stark contrast to today's 'committees'.

    Tim--You should have gone to Dallas. Your recommendations are poor and potentially confusing and dangerous.

    • @timwildsmith

      Hi David. You've been a watcher/subscriber for many months, so despite the difficulty of having a nuanced dialogue here in the comments, I'd love to kindly discuss this further with you if you'd like. Maybe you can tell me why you think my recommendations are poor and confusing/dangerous... and why you think that Dallas would have been a better seminary for me to attend.
