@@lataluzziegang Yep, the Beast tricked the Woodsman. The daughter was never dead or lost, she was patiently waiting for his return for who knows how long in their old home.
for those who didn’t read the comics, here’s a fun fact! the Woodsman’s daughter, Anna, never even turned to Edelwood - she remembered her mother’s warnings about the Beast and went home, but her father was already out searching for her, and assumed she’d died when he found her cloak laying at the feet of the Beast. since he took up residence in the Old Mill to fulfill the Beast’s wishes, he never went back home and saw her there - the reality was that both of them were just waiting to see one another again. :’D
My oldest had just turned 10, and I saw the promo for this "interesting looking" miniseries, "Over the Garden Wall." We watched it together and were enthralled. It was whimsical, nostalgic, spooky, tragic, funny, and ultimately very deep, and incredibly moving. The music grabbed us, as each song was a treasure. She memorized most. The next year, as Autumn returned, we watched it again, and I was amazed that we enjoyed it even more. The following year, my younger twins watched, after begging and promising they were old enough to not get too spooked. They were singing "Potatoes and Molasses" for days after. In a few days (this Friday night), we will be watching it again, because Fall has returned; our 7th annual viewing! We now project it onto our garage door and watch from lawn chairs in our driveway. We are joined by 3 other families on our block and their children. We will sing the songs and share the thrill of rediscovering it again, and welcome the season that used to mean little to me, but has become sacred. It is a cherished family tradition, and I can hardly wait for next year when we will do it again. It is, absolutely, a masterpiece.
Best October watch? Best october watch. This show loves autumn even more than I do, and since discovering it I've made it a yearly tradition to rewatch it every October, and every time I find more in it.
One thing i noticed, in almost every episode, Wirt and Greg stumble into the unknown. Those pumpkin guys, that kindergarten, that mansion with that creeped guy, and so on. But at the end of every episode, everything was not how it seemed to be at the start. Those pumpkin guys were not trying to bury Wirt and Greg, the teacher's father was not trying to rip all the fun out of the kindergarten, the gorilla was not a gorilla but a man in a suit, there was no ghost in the mansion, and the Lumberjack was harmful during the first episode. What is the show trying to say in my opinion?: Embrace the unknown.
@@andewr please do!!!! I really enjoyed this show but there aren’t many people that have watched it so there aren’t many TH-cam videos about it. I’m so happy i stumbled across yours and it would truly make me so happy to watch another video like this
This series has stuck with me since I first watched it. I had just turned 8 or 9. I couldn't explain why I loved it so much, but I knew it was different from the other shows I had watched. It's such a beautiful story; simple, elegant, yet so full of life and meaning. It truly is perfect. I'm almost 15 now, and I still watch it every spooky season.
Same here. I first saw it at five or six? I’ve never forgotten about it, and it’s honestly the best show. I wish there was more but I don’t want it ruined.
Saw the series 4 years ago and rewatched it again a month ago. It really is a masterpiece. Sometimes I wish I can re-experience the feeling of watching this gem for the very first time.
I have been listening to "old black train" on spotify just to remind me of this masterpiece, also may i add that the soundtrack is the best thing i ve ever heard?
I watched twice and still want to watch way more times but I also want to leave it as is because I want it to be a pleasant memory and not something I can get tired of by too many rewatches.
I was really confused by the opening of the show. The animation was kind of weird looking to me and all the sequences were nonsensical. By the time I finished I have completely forgotten about it. I then rewatched the show a day later and the opening blew my mind. Definitely in my top 3 animated shows ever.
I just watched Over the Garden Wall some months ago, but it feels SO nostalgic. The atmosphere, the characters, the story, the music, it all feels like a long lost memory that I just got back. It's definitively one of the most beautiful animations I've ever seen
Excellent review. What a great and passionate love letter to Over The Garden Wall and all of the fans who share that very same love. Thank you for continuing to keep the show relevant
I had just watched the entire show today and realize how EXTREMELY underrated this show was. I wish so much that I could have watched it when it came out, but CN rarely ever played the show. I’m pretty sure they only ever played it once or twice which is extremely saddening and it’s so frustrating that nobody’s talking about it! It deserves so much more recognition than it has!
I think this is a problem with many productions of this time. The authors have a maybe good idea, but the idea is being spread to create as many seasons as possible that the shows become watered down and then cancelled without conclusion. Over the garden wall was planned to be 10 short episodes long and that alowed it to be complete, thought through and perfected. Realle a beautiful piece of work💖
While I remember seeing the promos for this show when it came out and longing to watch it, I somehow never actually got around to it. It was only a few weeks ago that I actually got around to watching it and it immediate sucked me in. Most likely because of my neurodivergency I am deeply affected and enthralled by aesthetic and music, and this show was amazing at both, not to mention the amazing characters and storytelling. This really is the perfect autumn show.
beautifully well said.. I adore Over The Garden Wall, and wanted someone to listen to someone else talk about why. you did so well in that. thank you very much :)
I avoided this years ago I don’t know why but my cousin wanted to go as Greg and Wirt for Halloween so I checked out the show and I fell madly in love with it and had a great time dressing as Greg and wirt with my cousin
I was feeling overwhelmed and anxious before this video. This really helped calm my nerves. I remember watching this show when it first came about and it felt so special. I fell asleep to it every night for a month and held it close to my heart. I watched it in its entirety with my boyfriend then and he loved it. It is such a beautiful piece. I have parted ways with my boyfriend and feel like I’ve lost my closest friend. I feel so lost and I have the urge to sit down and rewatch the show again. This has helped me calm down. I want to cry so badly but as I’m watching your video I am feeling better and better. Thank you. You have captured the essence and peaceful environment that OTGW brings.
I remember watching this when it first came out in the late fall of that year and how I was going to thanksgiving dinner with my family. It’s truly a good show to watch during That season between Halloween and Christmas.
I honestly believe that the length of Over the Garden Wall couldn't have been more perfect. This same story could be told as a novel, a film, or even a short radio series! You don't have to stay for long before the whole story is over, and although we all know we wanted more, I think that most of us (myself for sure) are perfectly satisfied with the beautiful, memorable, and if I may say, timeless 10-chapter tale that we got. Your discussion of what you loved so much about Over the Garden Wall, I think, covers what we all loved about it very well! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Great video! I love Cartoon Network but Over the Garden Wall feels like such an outlier compared to most of their shows. The only other CN show that's even comparable, in terms of its simple sheer artistry, to Over the Garden Wall is Samurai Jack in my opinion. Also looking forward to Patrkck McHale's project with Guillermo Del Toro. That man has come a long way since Flapjack.
I just finished watching the show (after hearing your spoiler warning), and I've paused at 1:54 so I can offer my thoughts before receiving any influence from this video. The show does nothing new. It's sort of like a mix between Adventure Time and a typical "kids transported to a wacky world" movie. What it NAILS is the characters, and I do think the characters carry this show where the actual stories it tells aren't so spectacular. The woodsman especially adds so much to the stakes. To wrap up my thoughts before I become influenced by outside opinions, this show is a great watch, but definitely a kid's show. I am appreciative for experiencing the work, and will take influence from it's masterful characters for my own works. A season two would be tough, seeing as "it was all a dream", but if the characters were put into a better story, I think it would be a true masterpiece.
Also, why I didn't like the stories? (Also being written before I resume this video.) Some were fantastic. The pilot and the final two hit it out of the park, moving the story forward while keeping us in suspense and wonder at what was to come. However, a lot of the stories in the middle didn't do much to forward our characters or our story, they just introduced this wacky thing and that wacky thing. That's why I said in my first comment that it definitely feels like your normal kid's show, and that's probably because IT WAS MADE TO BE ONE! lol.
Over the Garden Wall is the perfect show for autumn. It gives you a feeling that I can't can't even explain. If you haven't watched it I definitely recommend it.
This video perfectly captures why the show is so beautiful, and yet there is so much more to love about it. It's the show that keeps on giving, despite its shortness. I look up to that.
Why do i feel like the Period of time the Unknown is set in is the most beautiful, turn of the Century Americana is something to behold, maybe why i love read dead so much, is because of this master piece. its so fleshed out, melancholy and it aches with feelings and storys not touched on, so much mystery. i love it to bits, the way characters are portered as you have shown, gives life and meaning somehow. but also fulels the fire of a mystery, it really feels like a setting of purgatory, what the line between death and life is. its just beautiful its all i can say.
I hesitated to watch this video as OtGW is so near and dear to my heart that I thought no person could do it justice. But you did. And now I am crying knowing that at least one person understands what this series means. I had never thought of it as a story of identity, but as someone who was recently given new mental health diagnoses, identity has been a constant struggle for me. But if Wert can accept who he is, maybe I can accept myself.
Just came across this series. I finished it, and all I can think is what if I had went my whole life and passed away having never experienced this perfection?!

Just showed my mom this show after I watched it about 5 months ago, and she loved it. I didn't remember how great this show was until I rewatched it, and now I'm hooked on watching videos of it, and yours was great!
When I watched the final episode I screen shot when the woodsman tried to hit the beast with the lantern and the true form that shows in the light is bizarre
No joke we watched an episode of this show in school to learn about animation and I really wanted to watch the whole show but never knew the name of the show so thank you. I guess I’ll finish the rest of the video after watching the ten episodes.
I remember as a kid I watched this, only recently I started to remember it from a soundtrack TH-cam recommended to me. I feel satisfied, this really makes me remember
I remember when It first aired on cartoon network I was 10, the show made me feel so comfy and now it's a cesspool of nostalgia it makes me want to cry, there will never be a show like this again 😢 it was good while it lasted.
Over the garden wall is one of those things that really does get better with every rewatch. Knowing how it ends you can catch on to bits and details of foreshadowing and understand it more and somehow less.

I could not have worded anything better. This completely and accurately describes the show and its essence. The love I have for this show is reciprocated by many and as a whole we can come together and just take in the unparalleled beauty and perfection of this show.

I need to re watch this so badly, I saw it when I was little and I just feel like I would enjoy it more now.
its so good because you feel fimiliar and its so calm and quit its so good and pat mchale is a legend for making it
When I watched the final episode I screen shot when the woodsman tried to hit the beast with the lantern and the true form that shows in the light is bizarre
One of the best shows ever
What you said about Wirt is so true.
You captured it so well. Nice review!
This is a show so beautiful that I've promised to only watch it once a year as a celebration of the coming of fall.
No joke we watched an episode of this show in school to learn about animation and I really wanted to watch the whole show but never knew the name of the show so thank you. I guess I’ll finish the rest of the video after watching the ten episodes.
Did ya watch it?
@@thoughts2574 Uhhhh no not yet but I still want to. I think I'll watch it this October if I can actually remember.
This video convinced me to watch the show. Thank you so much for introducing me to this beautiful piece of art. The video is also very nicely made.
I remember as a kid I watched this, only recently I started to remember it from a soundtrack TH-cam recommended to me. I feel satisfied, this really makes me remember
I finished the show earlier today and God I almost cried at the end
God it's just SO PERFECT. The story is wound so gorgeously
Knowing how it ends you can catch on to bits and details of foreshadowing and understand it more and somehow less.
this video captures the show perfectly. thank you for putting my thoughts into real, eloquent words omg
you have talent bro keep making videos!
Perfect must watch for Halloween and Autumn.
I get some very heavy Miyazaki influences influences with the animation. This is like a slightly creepier New England fall version of Spirited Away.
and thank you for making this great video. I came here after finishing this awesome show and you just made it better. I hope more people subscribe and watch you
i watch this entire series with my sister every spring and i cant wait to do it again
I could not have worded anything better. This completely and accurately describes the show and its essence. The love I have for this show is reciprocated by many and as a whole we can come together and just take in the unparalleled beauty and perfection of this show.
Man, you truly have a very nice voice! Please do more videos like these!! They're very entertaining to watch :D
I wish I could tell everyone the feeling this show gives me. No other show had made me feel such a feeling dawg I hate it
this video was so beautifully edited and reminded me how much I love and ache for OTGW. its definitely something im going to rewatch every once in a while just to feel something
This show played on Halloween once in my country and I remember it use to play on New Year's Eve.
