We hope this TEDTalk serves as a nice intro to a very creative speaker. We'll be publishing an original TED-Ed video/lesson by John Bohannon and his troupe sometime next week. Stay tuned....
Black Label Movement and John performed this piece again live for an audience of 550 high school science students in Minneapolis for our Minnesota annual concert. They loved it!
Really appreciating that - as far back as 2012 - this cast represents diversity! Congrats all on an excellent proposal and demonstration of the human form and all it's expressivity is capable of.
As a dancer, this video made me think. To combine my logical, thinking side with my expressive, artistic side is a beautiful idea. Oh how I wish this became the normal...
I always make a jest with my class before I lecture that I'm going to do the day's lecture in interpretive dance.......This will help turn the jest into a reality. Thank you for this.
We like the word satire a little more, but you've definitely put your finger on it. This is both a proposal for more collaboration with dance artists to communicate ideas and social criticism in the same vein as the original Modest Proposal by Swift.
That is the major issue with society though. There are scientists who can understand each other and will "get" breakthroughs in the given field, but laymen are left in the dust not knowing exactly what is going on. If we can use dance as a method to convey these breakthroughs or even old basic concepts, then maybe as a society we can grow and have a greater understanding of the world around us and how it functions.
Expense is not as high as you might think. Many undergraduate student or recent dance program graduates would be interested in connecting with people to visualize their ideas. Its really more about your willingness to reach out and ask. You'd be surprised how young artists might be willing to engage a project at a low fee. Of course, a professional company would be more expensive but not every project needs a professional company.
The dancing was distracting at first & I had no clue how this guy would be able to get his point across. After watching the video, I'm surprised at how much information I retained. Wow.
While I concede the point of representing statistics is better in static images, this is more about explaining a concept. This is especially useful when movement would help: whereas animated powerpoint slides tend to be boring, dance is far more memorable and visually appealing.
Saying that unemployed artist and dancers will turn to drug abuse and prostitution pissed me off. Do you expect them to not find a job in another area?
The problem is that he seems to assume that ALL people would learn better this way, which I find ridiculous. Now, may there be SOME for whom this is true, even MANY? Of course-it simply depends on an individual's learning style, which comes from the many unique ways their brain functions. Me personally, I viewed the 2012 Dance Your PhD winner and thought it was stupid. Does that mean it's inherently stupid? No, in another person's mind it could be briliant. But that's the exact point I'm making.
No I haven't. That's true. But I don't see how the dance can possibly present the information I need. Check out another great TED talks video: The beauty of data visualization. For me - that's the way it should be done. And there is no dance, that can do that.
Ashkan: Keep a look out for our new Talk called "The Facts of Life Talk" that John and Black Label Movement created together. We actually embody a bar graph, so this might give you some ideas. But remember we're not saying that dance can do all things for all presentations, just that it could be a useful way to communicate complex ideas in some compelling and useful ways.
You can download the song from composer Greg Brosofske's website. Just search for his name and you'll get to the website which the youtube system won't let me post here. Just click music from the homepage and scroll down to "my music from TEDxBrussels!
Some one from TED-Ed should come and talk to our Romanian education minister, the education is doing so poorly i have to learn everything from youtube !
Always is a dangerous word, and I don't think he's assuming that. Take this idea with a grain of salt. Even though his idea may not apply to every situation, wouldn't it be beautiful to see art integrated into science on a regular basis? The more dance is used, the better of a tool for communication it will become. It is often beneficial to communicate/learn from as many different angles as possible, while not being overly complicated... This is simply adding to that :)
Sure, this is good for explaining to a layman, but it simply can't communicate the complexity of exchanges between professionals (in engineering, or chemistry, or physics &c.) of the same specific field. Dance can be a device to convey big-picture education, but not technical matters.
Did he just say near the speed of light? Sure, they only move forward at some speed lower than the speed of light, but they are still moving at the speed of light, because they are just bumping around
dancing something means simplifying it to make it more understandable. even though it is a pretty idea, it's an extremely (time-)expensive method - and you should never use it in politics, where simplifying can be very dangerous. "wanna know why we have to attack arab countries? look at all those dangerous looking dancers with huge bombs tied to their bodies! i think we can agree that those must be eliminated!" seriously, we've been there in past centuries...
woww... im totally stunned by this idea. rather wondering whether we can use such performances to teach school kids because they have the lowest attention span!
Interesting as far as it goes. But it may have achieved an unintended purpose: NOW I understand better why college education is so expensive. Projects like this are supported by govt grants as well as tuitions etc.
This entire Talk is social satire riffing off Jonathan Swift's famous 1729 essay in which he satirically suggests that the way Ireland should deal with the excess of poor children is to eat them. This suggestion for unemployed artists is satire not serious to comment on how artists and their contributions are undervalued in many societies.

Hands up to this man's ability to focus while his words and ideas are dancing around him!

Same!
Amazingly beautiful!! I hope the government isn't going to cut the Arts' funding!
Had to use this video for a communications class at DACC.. pretty cool.
3:18 that sneaky hand
What an innovative idea! More of that!
I always make a jest with my class before I lecture that I'm going to do the day's lecture in interpretive dance.......This will help turn the jest into a reality. Thank you for this.
We watched part of the full talk in my dance class last year. I was really excited because I had already seen it :)
What a unique presentation! Definitely one of it's kind.

The dancing made these concepts less... abstract!
The dancing was distracting at first & I had no clue how this guy would be able to get his point across.

Where can I get the music starting at 9:39? Thanks!
I second that motion!

I really like his talk and laser cooled matter is awesome.. but im not giving up my powerpoints for these dancers!!
Im sorry. I prefer powerpoint/other presentation software.
This just seems silly for me.
No I haven't. That's true. But I don't see how the dance can possibly present the information I need. Check out another great TED talks video: The beauty of data visualization. For me - that's the way it should be done. And there is no dance, that can do that.
The human mind expressing one more of its endless possibilities.
Yes, I completely agree.
Well, I'll stick to my PowerPoint presentations: they seem a lot quicker, easier, cheaper to make and still explain my material a lot clearer.
This might cost you a bit more than a Powerpoint slideshow. It would probably also take longer.

Refreshing
Sounds awesome!

the ONLY good ted talk with a dance in it

This a joke if you didn't realize and you can tell as soon as he says "A Modest Proposal" (look it up)
Great!
Well this a brilliant idea. :)

lovely

I wouldn't be able to focus in a presentation like this, it's a great idea, I just couldn't learn with it
mind blown!
I really want to know what the music is they are dancing to at the end.
Genius!
I dont think he said 'the photons are moving near the speed of light IN THE VACUUM" which then would be an obvious thing to say.
When I read 'modest proposal', I thought Jonathan Swift and the cannibalism of babies. What has English class done to me.
I'd like to know what the song at the end is.
woww... im totally stunned by this idea. rather wondering whether we can use such performances to teach school kids because they have the lowest attention span!
That it worked is irrelevant. Things like Powerpoint are clearer and easier to use.
Boring. Predictable. Forgettable. Boring boring boring boring
"photons moving near te speed of light" XD
I hope universities are looking forward to hire dancers.
this isn't new, i saw this like a year ago on hulu's TED
Well of course unorganized presentation will be boring. And so does the unorganized dance would be. You are not making a point.
On a second take dude has composure and balls
Clearly you've never sat through a 100+ slide presentation. It's quite painful.
Why are you saying that to me?
I was making fun of the other guy. Tsk.
lovely :)
Didn't work. Debt has more than doubled in the past 10 years.
Or just hire people who know how to make a well built powerpoint.
Like.... every person who ever stood on TED's stage (except for a few).
Interesting as far as it goes. But it may have achieved an unintended purpose: NOW I understand better why college education is so expensive. Projects like this are supported by govt grants as well as tuitions etc.

An amazing idea, but I have to admit, I got distracted and lost what he was saying a lot.
And I repeat, how wonderful to see that homophobia is still alive and well in the world of TED.
I have found my calling.
brainstorming > bodystorming
Aren't the purpose of "modest proposals" to give you the idea in a ridiculous and almost satire-e way? If so this was perfect.
Great video, I love superfluids! ;)
I'm more worried about the budget cuts to NASA
brilliant so much atractive
Yes, especially the red-haired photon.
this guy reminds me of sheldon cooper. why is that?
haircut….
would have rather had a powerpoint sorry.
How wonderful to to see that homophobia is still alive and well even in the world of TED. Sigh.
xoxoxo
And last to make a good joke
Am I the only one who finds this really creepy?
What in the...
Well, I don't find this interesting
"This comment has received too many negative votes" i actually deserve that :P
Contrived, cheesy, cringe worthy. Couldn't watch.
second! Third and so on is sucks!
This is stupid, I don't like it....
8:00 or artists can find real jobs
As he said. Waste of time
🤮🤮🤬🤬🤪🤪😵😵
this wack
