Tony worked his behind off to get the flow of various rudiments sounding seamless. Here is a great example of his doubles to singles to flams combinations. He also loved the uninterrupted flow between bass drum and hands. No other drummer's playing moves me like Tony Williams.
Yes I must admit I thought his left hand single beat roll was impossible until the music stand was shown in the zoom out. But, he was the sort of drummer who gave you the impression he COULD do that. I was always astounded by his way of playing.
tony williams is an INSPIRATION and ROLE MODEL for all drummers of any genre of music!!!!!!!!!!!......oh and besides tony is all "warmed up"!!!!!!!!!!.............RIP.....TONY WILLIAMS!!!!!!!!
I really think Tony was the greatest of all time in terms of just being able to make music on a drum set with no other players around. He had a heart of music. I think one of the all time tragedies or missed opportunities - Hendrix with Tony. It could of/would have/should have happened sometime in the 70s.
Amazing start with the one hand This guy was way ahead of his time wow! I was about to type "A smokin' performance' and someone blew a cloud of that shit right across the stage and everyone was too cool to clap from what I could see lol!
The great Tony Wlliams 😁👍👍👍 Do you guys agree that he has his own snare sound ?? A little bit low on the batter & wet enough, but enough to bounce the sticks 😁
S U P E R B ! Fast becoming part of a seemingly distant past, like an exquisite island fading into the horizon as we get pushed farther and farther out into the vast sea of cookie cutter clones . . .
Not exactly the full on Ritual here. It's mostly singles(4's & 5's , doubles and flams (straight & tap). There are other videos on U-Tube that demonstrate the Ritual Tony knew fluently a bit better. From what I learned from Wallace Roney, Tony worked tirelessly to flow the rudiments seamlessly into one continuous roll. And then he integrated the foot into the mix. I miss him tremendously.
@@loucontino4804 It is a VARIATION in a solo context. But there are times when he does throw in the Rituatl into it, but it' s a revision of what the Ritual was.. But this is for a solo rather than a warm up exercise, so he takes a lot of liberties, but it's still going through rudiments and other ideas into one long stream of rolls, etc. and then he adds the feet and then the toms.. I've seen him play it where it actually starts off like the Ritual routine and then he strays from it.
the mighty 80's ... when people could light up their cigarettes just about anywhere:) yet, it didn't seem to disturb TW. I would have let a drumstick slip out of my hand and...oh, well
I've yet to see any footage on this guy doing something with taste. I really want to like his drumming. But I just don't. Hell im even 47 years old. But I can't find anything he does that's pleasing. He would have been a good rock drummer though. Can someone help me out?
brian boyd He made his name for pushing boundaries and being a fairly "in your face" drummer. If you are looking for smooth swing ala Jimmy Cobb, you are in the wrong place. However, Tony's brushwork is very smooth and super "tasteful". He also could play ballads and keep very delicate swing time. Still, the man became famous for being a renegade jazz drummer so he wasn't for everyone.
Hi , High Number , Ahhhhhh....I see. Makes sense now. I have been listening to more of his accomplishments since my first post. I'm starting to get it.
For a long time I didn't get Tony's playing either. I actually "found" Tony by listening to guys like Vinnie Colaiuta and Steve Smith. A lot of Vinnie's ideas evolved straight from Tony. Watching a performance by Tony at one of the Zildjian days back in the 80s (can be found online) really made it click for me. Then I bought a few of his albums he made with Lifetime and I was a convert. Along with Max Roach, he is one of the most musical drummers I have heard any where.
Hi , Matthew Thomas Thanks for the guidance. I'm gonna go down those avenues to check it out as it is so easy to do these days. As well, Thanks for everyone's help and replied with this!

Vinnie Colaiuta
amen
Only Tony could get away with playing rudiments like this. Scary brilliant.
I love the way Tony deliberately plays each part of the kit starting with the snare then thru the whole kit in a rubato form.
He was a genius...!!!
Thank you.....now I will watch again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ABSOLUTELY!
Man, I miss this guy! TW will always remain my favorite drummers!
You know you're good when people are watching you warm up.
especially old ladies who don't play the drums.
I love it when Tony finishes his warmup and looks at his watch. I imagine him saying, "Ok. Let's begin." Brilliant player and sorely missed.
Part of life is seeing. Part of life is hearing. Hear Tony. See the music stand in the way. Remember.
Yes I must admit I thought his left hand single beat roll was impossible until the music stand was shown in the zoom out. But, he was the sort of drummer who gave you the impression he COULD do that. I was always astounded by his way of playing.
I watch anything and everything on Tony Williams
Amazing recording, despite the bad angle and audio hiccups, thanks for sharing! NOBODY played like Tony....
Just amazing beyond belief.. This man was the drums and remains the drummer :)
his warming up is the best life time solo for most every other drummers.......l
That shows your painful ignorance and fan a$$ kissing,
ayone else think he was doing a one handed roll at the start lol ?
me! :)
he is alternating one stroke and two stroke roll and maybe also paradiddle without changing the speed of the roll
You mean like this?... 🤯
th-cam.com/video/X8Zfdank3rI/w-d-xo.html&t=130
yep
💯 thought it was one hand in the beginning.😂
VERY POWERFUL MASTER OF HIS INSTRUMENT. INSPIRATION. TIMELESS MAN
Tony was ferocious....
One of the best all times
Exceptionally rare look into Tony Williams. Thank you.
My all time favorite player.
That music stand FML.
Very good warming up!!!Gretsh sands great!!!
This is priceless
singles into doubles for 2min solid, precision UNREAL
I'm a drummer.... is that supposed to be hard? It's not.
Tony is a king, but this is what we all do.
I seriously would give up my left ball to be able to play like Tony.
id pull a alessandeo moreschi to play like him
so awesome..!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes ! Une chance d'avoir écouté Tony d'aussi près!!
thanks Tony love you

Thats some great Tony footage
I miss you in so many ways!
the flow mesmerises me
When people say what is the point of rudiments. This.
I really think Tony was the greatest of all time in terms of just being able to make music on a drum set with no other players around. He had a heart of music. I think one of the all time tragedies or missed opportunities - Hendrix with Tony. It could of/would have/should have happened sometime in the 70s.
They were planning on making a group with Tony on drums, Miles on trumpet, Hendrix on guitar and Paul McCartney on bass. That would've been something.
Thank you
It's crazy how seamlessly he goes in and out between singles and doubles
Amazing start with the one hand This guy was way ahead of his time wow! I was about to type "A smokin' performance' and someone blew a cloud of that shit right across the stage and everyone was too cool to clap from what I could see lol!
Thanks!!!
he laid down some excellent recordings
Thank you for uploading
👍🏾👍🏾
more videos like this. please.
GOD HAS ALL OF THE BEST DRUMMERS!!!
RIP TONY!!!
Elvin and Tony is already with Him. We still have Jack.
That watch check at the end. Burning.
Thank you!
Wow, that was sweet , thatnks for the post
Unico e straordinario
GREATNESS!!!
Tony のドラミングの概念はロックに近いものがあると感じます。 又、スタジオミュージシャンのドラミングのあり方にも影響を与えていると思います。
素晴らしいドラマー。
Thank you for uploading
Just like Jack DeJohnette! Praising singles, doubles and paradiddles after one another
The importance of rudiments!
Tony personified many different aspects of drum set and rudimental drumming...truly a master
as alan dawson taught him...
Alan Dawson, if you studied with him (seriously) , you were or are , most likely a master yoda, or closing in...
A shame they couldn't move that music stand, doubles and singles, I could listen to him all day.
The dude beside him is smokin 🔥
LITERALLY! It's funny though, how those days are gone in the USA, maybe Europe might still allow smoking' inside.
damn he was a powerful player
The great Tony Wlliams 😁👍👍👍
Do you guys agree that he has his own snare sound ?? A little bit low on the batter & wet enough, but enough to bounce the sticks 😁
I think I'm on the right track after hearing this
My Goodness!!!!
In the late eighties he had his solo ideas down to a science practically, boy do I love his ideas!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
He checked his watch at the end. He timed himself? The man was disciplined.
Very cool.
Smoking at a workshop. Now that's rare
S U P E R B ! Fast becoming part of a seemingly distant past, like an exquisite island fading into the horizon as we get pushed farther and farther out into the vast sea of cookie cutter clones . . .
Tony!!!
The guy sitting there smoking. Wouldn’t get away with that today lol.
what an a**hole, we can see tony turning is head......
Icon
singles doubles smoothly
The gigantic wooden music stand in the view of greatness? WTF ?
Singles and doubles, paradiddles.
Yep, played smooth as butter.
Moving the bloody reading stand outta they way did not come to mind?
Fabian Jolivet Maybe Tony couldn't play all this without having it written, ha, ha.
claes file Reduced has been a great day
I’m
It's really not blocking much. Do you really need to see his toms?
Monster.
worst drum angle camera ever. but thanks for letting us hear tony. its like witness a miracle every time
Nice to see something other than Canary yellow with C-S heads.
G.O.A.T
Its actually pretty cool to see and hear his style on a more "conventional" kit as compared to his iconic yellow set.
It's the same set, just a different colour :-)
Damn music stand
footage shot from the bow of a deep sea fishing vessel.
ISTANBUL CYMBALS !!!
In his career - did ever make any instructional videos?
Miroslav Vitous was the teaching bass. Not Ron Carter.
Ready to 200% for to be 100% on stage...
Wow
Dudes sitting there smoking ... indoors no less . 1987 alright lol
Matthew Vega Tony was found of an ole cigar himself
at least he was using an ashtray ...
MV 2112 I used to go and sit with my father in his office so he could keep an eye on me and all the offices had ash trays in them and usually full.
no custom snare ...... just pure natural technique
Can that music stand be digitally removed?!
Just ask‘ in!
It would appear the camera man is not a drummer or would not been in a position where a t. v. monitor is blocking the right hand view completely.
that actually is not a tv Monitor but a music stand, but of course you´re right about the bad camera Position :(
It's so odd to see someone smoking indoors now.
F*CKING SUPERNATURAL!!!!!
4:23 AWESOME
Happen to have the full workshop by chance? :D
Not on Video unfortunately. But I can offer this ;) th-cam.com/video/e9a1RRAKUDg/w-d-xo.html
@@khm5369 Oh wow! full of surprises! Thank you for sharing!
Istanbul Cymbals ???
That can't be tony Williams. He isn't playing black dot batter heads in the reso side of his toms!
No earplugs and dude blowing cigarette smoke on Tony, good ole days
the guy on the green shirt on the left he shakes head like ..aha..... yes.... yes and then .....yes oh ! i got it
Sounds like he's doing Rudiment Rituals or his own variation he learned from Alan Dawson.
Not exactly the full on Ritual here. It's mostly singles(4's & 5's , doubles and flams (straight & tap). There are other videos on U-Tube that demonstrate the Ritual Tony knew fluently a bit better. Back in the days when inconsiderate people were allowed to choke everyone in the room with their cigarette smoke.
Ja, das hat meinem Papa sicher gefallen
Lg von Martina Bachträgl :)
Singles, doubles. Good practice for smooth transitions
There are singles in 4's and 5's in there and some flams...listen close.
Tony hits 1/32 pulse. Not unusual.
You would think the person filming it would have positioned himself better instead of right behind that music stand.
