Is the Ferrari F2012 The Worst Car Ever to Challenge for a Title?

  • The 2012 season to many fans is easily one of the best in F1's history, an unpredictable and chaotic beginning to the season and a close title battle that went right down to the wire, it had everything. However, one of the most memorable things from that year also was the tumultuous Ferrari F2012 that somehow went from qualifying 1.5 seconds off pole in the first race to coming just 3 points short of the title. It's been described as one of the worst cars to ever fight for a title but how bad was it really, and was it actually the worst car ever to get to a title decider?

I just follow the sport since season 2018 so I count myself as a new fan. I personally think alonso is a very talented and very passionate driver. That combination makes him a strong pilot but also one of the worst nightmares for a team that does not manage to fullfill or even exceed alonsos expectations. Sure he delivers. every. single. time. But he is not good at being a team leader nor creating a healthy environment that rewards taking risks for a huge benefit. And people often underestimate the importance of such skills for a sucessfull f1 team.

Greater than Prost in 1990, Lauda in 1976, Schumacher in 2000, Hamilton in 2018, Senna in 1991, Mansell 1992 etc. He almost won in a car that was 4th quickest over the course of the season, and was regularly 5th/6th quickest in the 1st half of the season.

Case in point... If Vettel didn't DNF from the lead in Valencia (which was given to Alonso in the first place), or if he didn't receive a puncture from a backmarker in Malaysia that put him out of the points, if he also didn't DNF in Monza from 4th place and if he wasn't crashed into in Brazil... You have to look at both sides. And also his ridiculous 25 second penalty in Germany.
Plus, in Japan, Alonso was kind of at fault in that incident. He was unlucky in Belgium yes, but the likelyhood of him winning that race was quite hard. The McLaren was really on a league of it's own that race with Button and Vettel himself catapulted from 11th to 2nd.
Also Hamilton himself retired from the lead like 3 or 4x that season and had his pit-stops screwed in quite a few races.
Under normal circumstances, this would've been a Hamilton vs Vettel fight.
Not taking away credit from Alonso, he was a monster, best driver in that season for sure. But as Aldas stated in the video, and it's a fact, the Ferrari had 0 RELIABILITY issues, and also had very good tyre wear compared to McLaren and Red Bull for some reason, and contrary to what we see these days, Ferrari a lot of the time nailed their strategys... AND, Massa was LITERALLY used as a wingman that whole season. Ferrari even made him have a gearbox failure so that he could get a grid penalty to make Alonso get another place higher up on the grid.
And... of course... The competitiveness of the cars that whole season. The cars were actually similar to each other in pace in a lot of races. Even in Brazil, Hulkenburg in a Force India was actually having MORE PACE than BOTH McLarens... Perez in Malaysia finished 2nd and had the best pace of that race. Maldonnado winning in a Williams, Rosberg winning with his Mercedes. Lotus with their very good package as well taking a lot of times points away from McLaren and Red Bull.
There were a ton more circumstances involved that made Alonso fight for the title. Him being on top of his form was probably the biggest reason, yes, but it wasn't the only one. This sport is still a team game. If your pit crew, strategists, mechanics, team principal, screw up, it affects the championship.

But in terms of luck Alonso even had a disatvantage compared to Vettel. Vettel got a penalty in Italy. He probablly wouldn't have scored any points there.
Alonso would have easily won in Italy without the mechanical problem in Qualifying
In Canada Ferrari threw away a win for Alonso with the wrong Strategy.
In Monaco Ferrari could have made Massa stay out to block Vettel and Vettel wouldn't have gained any position.
And in Brazil Vettel turned into Senna und was lucky that nobody drove into his car.

Actually, the cars weren't as different as you may think. Red Bull was the 2nd fastest and Ferrari was 4th fastest. Notice how McLaren has more wins. I still think Fernando's drive was the greatest of the season but anyone with a McLaren or a Lotus could have won against Seb had they been good enough. You have to remember that Red Bull had lots of reliability issues. If Ferrari had managed to get their car to McLaren's level, Fernando would have got the title as easily as Seb did in 2013 imo.

It might be an unpopular one but I think 2017 might be Vettel's best season in his career. It is the only season that he was the underdog in a close title fight and he actually did better than what the final standings show. He drove with good consistency and without mistakes. The luck and reliability of the machine were the deciding factors in the end but if he didn't suffer from them we would see a title decider. 2011 and 2013 are statistically his best seasons but he just needed to beat Webber. Considering he barely won 2010 and 2012 and his gap to Webber wasn't as big as their other seasons together, no need to say they weren't impressive season. 2018 is a total failure from him, despite having an equal car this time, he was far from his 17 level and made many mistakes. 2008 is also very impressive but doing great in midfield is not comparable to a title challenge.

If Frentzen hadn't retire on Nurburgring, he would have real chances of winning the '99 title for sure. The car was good enough to capitalise the errors made by McLaren and Ferrari.
-He and his race engineer (Sam Michael) made a silly error on that race, after the pitstop Sam didn't told Frentzen about disabling the anti-stall system and the car lose drive on the exit.
Heinz though it was an hydraulic or electrical problem and retired, but disabling the system itself would have get things back to normal. They were under a lot of pressure.

Yes! He said that in an interview for the F1 podcast. He was looking at Massa who was in tears because of the podium he managed to get. It had nothing to do with Vettel's title winning. Had it been capable of the "odd win there and there", Massa would have got more podiums, but still would never come close to a win. Alonso was the one capable of those wins.
I think that an underrated car that season was the Lotus, they had some double podiums, two if I recall correctly, in Bahrain and Hungary, with drivers like Kimi and Romain who were just returning to the sport, so I doubt they were at their best.

As was briefly mentioned, reliability was a huge factor that carried that car through the season. Alonso didn't have a single issue all season, whereas the fastest car of that season, the McLaren, had a number of issues. The Red Bull was especially hit by poor reliability, with Seb alone: Obviously there was the alternator failure in Valencia which cost 32 points alone, but there were so many throughout the whole season:
Australia - KERS failure in Qualifying
    Malaysia - No radio
Monza - another retirement due to alternator failure
Abu Dhabi - fuel pump failure leading to DSQ from Qualifying and pitlane start
Brazil - No radio leading to multiple ruined pitstops and no communication on weather / how to deal with the damage

In my opinion the f2012 didn’t look bad at all and in my opinion Fernando and Ferrari would have deserved to win that title. Clearly qualifying performance wasn’t great but Fernando’s race pace and the car’s reliability were phenomenal. The crash in Spa indeed ruined their season.
You can’t say they didn’t deserve to fight for the title only because of performance and “luck” at the beginning of the season. It’s like saying Hamilton didn’t deserve his 2008 title or Kimi his 2007 title because they also were lucky at some point in the season.
In conclusion, yes the f2012 had a bad start, yes it wasn’t the most performing car but Fernando and the team did everything they could and were able to fight for the championship and they would have deserved to win the title.

3 things you need to get right to win a driver's championship; 1, A great car. 2, A great team. 3, A great driver. 2012 was an interesting year because I felt Vettel and Red Bull were technically 2nd best in every single category, which is WHY they won. Mclaren had the best car, but the team didn't develop it to it's full potential and their drivers were inconsitent probably as a result. Ferrari had the best driver that year, team did a fantastic job too but their car was awful. Red Bull and Vettel were just the most solid and aside from perhaps the team aspect, certainly were second best on the driver and car front.
