What a beautiful rendition. I heard it many times at my grandparents' home (Oma and Opa) growing up, and my dad also played it on the accordion. Takes me back.
Thank you for your very nice comments! We remember lovely melodies such as this one and reflect favorably upon our years of learning music in youth and childhood. Sincerely, ~Glenn~
I remember this song. In 1973 when I was 9 and my dad was stationed at Spandahlem AB, Germany, we had this very salty old German lady named Fraulein Kramer who used to come to our class 3 times a week and she used to have us sing this song. This brings back some very good childhood memories. I'm 51 now and I can still remember most of the song. It left an indelible impression on me.
+Walter Spargo Thank you for your very nice comments! We heard this song many times on the radio while growing up back on the East Coast. Many television and recording artists featured this song on their albums and concert performances. A well loved tune which has become something of a standard for many people. Regards, ~Glenn~
I remember this melody from my grandfather. Who, every once in a while, will play it on his harmonica. It is a truly beautiful song, and you preformed it very astoundingly. Thank you, for bring back fond memories of mine.
I love this song. It was my Papa's favorite German folk song and he sang it all the time since I was a little girl. He passed away 3 months ago at the age of 96 and I played your version for him several times while he lay dying. I hope he could hear it and that it helped ease him into the next world to be reunited with his beloved German mother and grandmother.
Dear Monnet, thank you for your lovely comments and for sharing these heartfelt sentiments. Your words deeply touch my heart. In fond remembrance of those we love like your dear Papa. Thank you for listening. Sincerely, Glenn
It's a lovely tune. Just to show you how timeless, beautiful songs get around: when I was taking music lessons in the 50's on Hawaiian guitar, this was one of the songs in our workbook that we learned to play. (Most music studios at that time gave lessons in guitar, "Hawaiian guitar," and accordion! )
This was one of my mothers favorite songs. She played it on her Hammond Organ all the time in our living room as we children were growing up. She was Italian! My sister and even myself learned to play this old and wonderful German folksong, many years ago during the 1960's. You play with expression and I enjoyed your playing. Peter in America.
My mother came to America at age 11 around 1930-31. I write that because while reading the comments below and also your responses I see your grandparents also came to America around 1928-1929.
Thank you, Peter, for your very nice comments and for sharing your family memories! We love the older melodies which carry so much expression and heartfelt sentiment in their lyrics and musical language. Sincerely, Glenn
PeterDad60 Thank you, Peter, for writing about your family and for taking the time to listen to this song! I have always thought that the 1920's and 1930's continue to tell their contemporary stories through the art of photography and the art of song. My grandfather played many of these melodies on his violin and an upright piano, songs which still resonate today in my fondest recollections from the 1950's. Sincerely, Glenn
Thank you so much for sharing this! My mom's Opa would sing this to her when she was a young girl in Germany. Brings back a lot of memories for her. Thank you.
Hello Glenn, I found your video in a search for this song. My son is learning it on piano and I wanted him to hear how it sounded in the "old days". You play it just like my great Papa used to play it on his accordion at Christmas or any other special occasions. Being of German/Austrian decent, this really means a lot to our family...I have sent the link to all of our family members for them to enjoy. Thank you for your wonderful performance.
Thank you for your lovely comments and for sharing these heartfelt family memories! I am deeply moved by your words and am honored that you would listen to this and then write such an expressive message regarding music and the traditions we have come to cherish over time. Yes, this song was always a family favorite for my grandparents who came to America in 1928/ 29. It seems to strike a chord which words alone cannot fully express. Thank you for sharing this song with your family and for writing such an inspirational note which touches the heart and blesses the soul in an everlasting manner. Sincerely, Glenn
Really nice. I just finished a book about Lou Gehrig and in it they said after he gave his last goodbyes at Yankee Stadium they played Du Du Liegst Mir Im Herzen and I was curious as to what the song was. Not being German I was interested and after hearing your fine rendition I recognize it, having heard it many times at Octoberfests here in Philadelphia.
A wonderful folk song. I also love to play it. I found out they have translated the German meaning as good as possible into 4 English stances. Greetings Dieter
@FromHolbergsTime OH Glenn --your words are always positive and wonderful --and way too kind for me....I didn't even know I had a style --i kind of throw everything.. pent up in my brain at the end of the week into a big cauldron --you know like making Borscht--which i do often --and you should see --what i do with that !! ;-D...stop in for a bowl. ;-]

@FromHolbergsTime Oh Glenn --you 've done it with you lovely words again --no actually -- I can't practise anymore on accordion --too many neck and shoulder problems --so I only pick up the Beast when I have to ...and so lose technique all the time...and the keyboard --self taught --not sure I'm doing it right---but oh well ---as Mama Cass put it --make your own kind of music....even if it's on pots and pans....which some are getting out to use for some of my posts.... ;-D
I have experienced some personal setbacks and have not been able to upload new songs. If I can practice some new tunes I may be able to upload them on You Tube. Thank you for listening and for following my channel. Sincerely, Glenn

I'm currently learning the accordion, and learning all these songs and seeing my parents and grandparents have the nostalgia from their days as children speaking German makes me happy. It really makes me sad to see all this history starting to die away, and I want to do my part to preserve it. You play this piece wonderfully! I do have a question though, when you repeat and start playing it again you switch the Treble side to a different instrument setting, which one did you start on and which one did you switch to? Thanks!
Stephen, thank you for your very nice comments! I think I started with the light musette setting and then moved on to the Bandoneon and the Master registers, with some of the clarinet or flute also in one of the variations. I close with the same musette register that begins the piece. A friend said that he thought that particular voice sounds very French in character. Bravo to you for learning the accordion. It is a nice portable instrument that requires no electricity and can be played anywhere to entertain family and friends. Thank you for listening and for your nice words! Sincerely, ~Glenn~
