    A pound is equivalent to 454grams . There are 7,000 grains in a pound ; so , a grain is --- 454/7000 = about .0649 grams . An M-80 should therefore have 80 grains of flash powder --- 80x(.0649)=5.192 grams . A half stick should have 500 grains --- 500x(.0649)=32.45 grams of flash . A full stick should have a 1000 grains --- 1000x(.0649)= 64.9 grams of flash . Then as far as the salute goes it depends on the type of flash powder used . I will not go into formulation because the youtube police probably would block it if I tried ; but , it involves potassium perchlorate , dark aluminum and a sensitizer . Anyway , if the aluminum powder is fine enough flake , 80 grains of the flash powder formulated will be louder than the half stick in this video. That half stick in the video is not bad for standard 70/30 mix . The flash formulation I am talking about can be found on the PyroData site .

      So, at 23 grams, I am somewhere in the middle of a quarter and a half stick. I knew I was way more than a quarter. It is definitely potassium perc and aluminum powder.

      @@shavontea00 Thanks . The M-80 was originally supposed to be a military simulator for explosions in military training but people liked them as fireworks . The grain as a measurement is how they measure how much propellant is used in a fire arm round . For example , a 22 short originally contained 4 grains of black powder . The modern 22 short uses about 2 to 3 grains of smokeless powder . I also agree with you that a you tube video does not do justice to how loud a flash powder explosion is in person . A you tube video kind of muffles the sound whereas in person a flash powder explosion kind of startles you even if you are ready for it .

    It’s called a salute , cannon cracker , Dego bombs. 1/4 stick? 1/2 stick? Compared to what? Dynamite.
    2 very different categories
    Those are filled with “flash powder” and dynamite used nitroglycerin, sodium, sorbents. Dynamite is used for blasting hard rock tree stumps on my aunts farm and it has a slower explosive effect to move “material”
    compared to Flash Powder aka 70/30that does not need to be contained to explode faster than she speed of sound and is very dangerous and unstable even in a controlled static free environment. Don’t get me wrong I love the “thumps” but when people don’t know the differences between the 2 people start rumors when they are naive and not properly educated. I’ve been doing stuff like that for 42 years legally under a fireworks company and I mad them for inserts in big shells , I was a flash man in a shed for a very well known Italian fireworks manufacturer. I could not wear anything nylon, all cotton, no metal on anything you wear while manufacturing, I couldn’t even a transistor radio to listen to , I would yell to my other “flash man” coworker and he was about 50 feet in the second “flash shed” so we kept the day “green” and not going crazy knowing ANYTIME Murphy will come knocking and you don’t want to answer the shed door. It was very nerve racking job because if something did happen you would NEVER know what happened……☠️☠️☠️ For extra safety precautions I put a grounding pole in the shed driven into (always wet dirt floor about 2 feet down and hooked up a body worn ground strap to dissipate any static electricity, the last safety precaution I took was to mount a 12in x 12in Brass plate just outside the sheds door so I could touch it and get de-energized from any static before I even stepped in to that 8ft x 8ft coffin. Be safe and stay green…!

      Ha ha, same feelings. Anytime someone says a stick, it just makes me laugh. A stick of what? Our Dynamite was about half c4. I don't even think it had 5% tnt. The sticks were weaker, slower, but safer. The mining sticks had about all waterproof Anfo. It's about 2 feet long. The loudest salute was a cylinder shell with wadding and sealed ends. It gave it a little time to expand before it hit the plugs. It sounded like Artillery airburst. That's a big stick.

    I never understood creating a measuring system of comparison. Flash and dinomite are such different feelings and sounds. The pitch is entirely different and the Shockwave from high explosives are very intense. I have spent more time with dinomite, although I prefer flash. . We used to shoot 22s at it at the mine growing up. If you made a tetrazol or even tannerite to some degree is closer. One's a boom with a soft pressure change, and the other is a Crack with a powerful Shockwave. Just call it what it is. 20 grams of flash, ect.

      Indiana is a great state for year round fireworks. They have deals out of season too. It’s funny I’ve lived in Chicago my whole life and Illinois has tough laws on fireworks. Sparklers and little smoke bombs are all you can buy in Illinois. But right across the border into Indiana… holy smokes! There are about 30 fireworks stores. Warehouses I should say. It’s hilarious how all the Illinois residents drive to Indiana for fireworks. It’s like 20 minutes away without the traffic jams.

      This comparison to dynamite is complete bull. I know, ppl have been using these half and quarter stick terms forever but it’s complete nonsense. Just to put it in comparison, an M-80 is comparable to a blasting cap, which is used to detonate the dynamite. A quarter of a stick of actual dynamite is around 60X faster in detonation speed than whatever sized tube filled with flash powder your comparing it to. To qualify as a half stick salute, you need at least 25 grams of 70/30. These I have weighed myself. 23 grams is closer to a Half than a Quarter Stick. Yes, technically mine would still be a Quarter because I'm 2 grams shy. Quarter stick salute is 15 grams. An M1000 or Full is anywhere from 50 to 100 grams. You can find these numbers on Wiki which cites Journal of Pyrotechnics by Kosanke. The more powder content you have, the wider the tube diameter you need to avoid unignited powder. Those 110 gramers you got would have to be at least 2 inch diameter or more I imagine. More than 25 grams in a 1" diameter tube is just wasted powder. So really, your 60 gram stick is actually a full stick so long as you have a wide enough diameter to ignite all 60 grams the tube breaks.

    • @sublordlord7834
      @sublordlord7834 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adding anymore flash is wasted. If you look at the ground where you lite the salute and see any flash powder remains. Since flash burn so fast, too much powder most of it won’t burn. Adding more flash you have to go from 1 inch tube to 2 inch tubes. The best mix for me is potassium Persulfate, sulfur and Mag powder. 20 grams sounds like 100 grams of 70/30 mix Potassium perchlorate and Dark aluminum powder.
