Foreign born student's parents showed up for everything and often had their kids translate for them. The parents knew the value of education. So yeah, I blame bureaucracy, but also parents for not demanding better.

Not all were great but my math and science teachers were excellent and i became an engineer. We didnt have the most funding. Teachers need to focus on teaching and not all the other nonsense going on in schools. We knew nothing of our teachers personal lives and rarely their first name. I am proud of this principal and i hope they have continued success. I am honestly shocked that Baltimore is 3rd in the country for funding. There must be corruption somewhere a d this debunks the notion that under funding creates a school to prison pipeline. I have heard many times that the poorest schools are that way to create some pipeline to prison for financial benefit.

My elementary school principal would come to each hew students house and read them a bed time story (not creepy parents were there lol). He would wear these big Donald Duck slippers and a funny robe and would bring tons of books, and I think we could even keep the book. This was a public school in a rural part of the county. I actually credit that school and his leadership so much for my success. Tommy Hughes is the goat and deserves all the praise.

The Nuns in my high school (where many students were impoverished and came from crime infested neighborhoods) told us that our potential was in us to be unlocked, no matter what our circumstances were. The school had 100% college placement at a fraction the cost of public school.
Later in life, I taught at a high school overseas where there was no central heating, kids cleaned their own home rooms, took turns cleaning the bathrooms and groomed their own sports fields. Yet the average math scores were two grade levels above US counterparts.
It’s not a question of funding. It’s all about attitude.

I've never heard of a 100% poverty school in Houston. I don't think it's even possible in Houston because we don't have zoning so there never really is any place that is truly walled off from poverty, or from wealth.

Holy hell, Hagerstown getting a shoutout in a AJW video. Not surprised at the context, but hey!
A lot of people I know are so disheartened that cities like Hagerstown and Baltimore are leaving their communities and kids behind. This really is uplifting.

The reason the objective standards are being lowered is NOT because the teachers do not have confidence in student's ability to learn. They question their own ability to effectively teach.

It's understandable that a school in a smaller city will have problems that are less complex and more consistently solvable. What is truly unacceptable in Baltimore are the excuses that are made for not getting ANY traction and the continued employment of managers who have the sole responsibility of creating a workable learning environment. If you can't do it, you need to stop getting paid for trying, or more likely, for pretending to try.

Just because you think you cant do something, or someone has told you that you cant reach your goals, doesnt mean you should wallow in mediocrity or slog through the hell that is severe poverty. Reach for it, fight for it, earn it.

I love this story, Sean! Thank you for covering it. The principal made me think of my mom, who became a teacher in her 30s and later a principal. She was tough and feared nothing (she is retired but hasn’t changed). Even if they resented her the first time she caught them acting up, students of every class and race grew to love her because she really believed they could rise to a challenge. She led that high school out of its rep as the “bad” school to the state’s top 3.

I couldnt imagine living somewhere like this. Teachers have to personally go out and make sure kids go to school. When i was in grade school in the 90s/high school in the early 2000s you either went to school or they came after your parents. Luckily i have great parents. They ensured i got my ass up lol. It all amounts to the home life. Its so important
