John and Catherine are a husband and wife team from Southern Connecticut. We grow food and flowers on the new 40 acre farm we just bought and are building from the ground up using reclaimed materials whenever possible.

Y'all are cute! We don't see Mrs. Redding very often. This is going to be very interesting to watch how it works. Can't wait!

Yes, she inspired me too. My farm is working on setting up our fiber operation here in GA. We're getting The Brother carder too.

Lol at the torcher equipment. I can understand why you would feel intimidated by it. It looks confusing. The big one looks even more confusing. I’m excited to see how you guys go with this. Good luck I know you will figure it out.

This is so exciting. I am eager to hear what you think of the carder. We have the same dilemma with our sheep fleece and mills around here. We looked into big machines and were like, no way. We have manual spinning wheels and carders, but it takes a lot of time. Love that you guys always test stuff for the fleece. Looking forward to a follow up.

That is a really good drum carder! I have the same brand, though mine is not quite as wide as yours (#jealous). I also have a small ashford Wild Carder, non electric. The small drum is called the "licker in" or just the "licker" (yes, really, I'm not messing with you, lol). You may find that you don't want the packer brush down all the time, and rather choose when to use it. Loading onto the big drum directly is not just for artistic placement, some fibers feed on better that way, especially any that are really slippery, like silk, bamboo, tencel or nylon.
When you prep fiber to feed through the tray, it should be thin enough to read text through. If you load too much the carder can get stuck, or tax the motor. The direction you feed it in is a matter of debate among fiber artists. And, dont pull back on the fiber, or put any pressure on it once it starts to feed. That will cause more fiber to get stuck on the licker in rather than feeding through to the big drum. The things that look like dog slicker brushes are also for packing the fiber onto the drum, and they can help with removing it from the drum and cleaning the drum and licker in. They are called "doffers" or "doffer brushes". The ice pick (it usually is an ice pick) is usually just called a batt pick. The resulting batt is a "carded" preparation (not combed), and it will result in a yarn that has more air space in it when spun, which is softer and warmer and has more structure than combed preps, but it also pills more. Combed preps have less air, and are generally stronger and better wearing, and also have superior drape. Different preps are used to design yarns that are best suited for different purposes. You can also use a "diz" to pull the fiber off the drum in a long strip, basically ready to spin, which is called a "roving" (obviously, a true roving is also a carded prep, and not the same as "combed top", a mill prepared combed prep that is confusingly often sold as "roving", but it isn't roving).
All fiber processing equipment looks like medieval torture devices, lol. Wait until you see pickers, and hackles and combs, lol. BTW, if you really think you're going to put the time and effort into processing all your fiber, there's more equipment you're probably going to want. You might want a tumbler for alpaca fleece (will save a ton of time in washing), and you might want a picker, too. I don't want to dampen your enthusiasm, but the amount of time needed to hand process that much fleece into yarn without actual mill equipment is probably not feasible. You won't be able to reclaim the labor cost, probably at all. It takes way too long to hand spin yarn to sell it at a price most people will pay, for regular everyday yarn for garment making. Some production spinners can accomplish it. You might do ok with art yarn, though, you can charge a lot more for it.
Wishing you all the luck with whatever you decide to try. Processing fiber is rewarding, but it really is a labor of love. Have fun with your new toys! I mean, equipment!

Whoa! You guys bought the top-of-the-line drum carder and e-spinner. I'd love to see a follow up of how this is going for you. I started spinning a year ago and I'm just starting to blend my own fiber with drum carder and spin it. I think it's a lot of fun and makes me feel like my best, creative self. Seriously, how is this going? I'd love to know. Cheers from Saint Paul, MN!

I'm embarrassed to say it's not going at all 😭 it's set up in the bedroom upstairs and unused. We have a batch of fiber at a mill now to be washed and clouded and hoping to try it when we get that back.
