I was a little Black girl when this came out and this song was considered to be comparable to the Motown sound. They, like Elvis, were categorized as blue-eyed souls, which was an honorary title considering the times.

This is called blue-eyed soul. These guys were the best. Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. They were magic together. And remember this is done live. No auto-tuning crap like today. And the songs had meaningful beautiful lyrics. Other great songs by them is "Unchained Melody", "Soul & Inspiration", "Just Once In My Life", "Ebb Tide", "Rock & Roll Heaven" etc.

@dagmars.6954 : The vocals on this TH-cam clip are NOT "done live".
They are - from / the same - as the original studio recording session vocals as heard on their hit single.
Here are the actual LIVE vocals from this January 1965 appearance on "SHINDIG" :

This was the most played song on the radio in the 20th century. It held number 1 on Billboard for 16 weeks. I was a sophomore in High School when this came out. At a time when rock n roll was exploding with the Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, etc.; this great duo held their own at the top of the charts. Saw them live twice, and Bill Medley as a soloist at his own club in the late 70's. They were dynamic and exceptional on stage, and are one of my all time favorite artists.

    • @thomastimlin1724
      @thomastimlin1724 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

16 weeks?! No offense meant here, but most sources, including the Billboard Hot 100 history, show this song/artist was at Billboard #1 position for only 2 weeks in February 1965. It appears they were officially on the Billboard chart for maybe 8 weeks in different positions during it's run. The Hall and Oats version in the early 1980's reached #12 Billboard Hot 100 chart. But you've got one up on me, I never saw them live!

A Marine in attendance at a nightclub performance early in their career unknowingly gave them the name. As they poured their souls out into a song, he jumped up and shouted "that's righteous, brothers!" Their style was unique, and eventually a DJ coined the term "blue-eyed soul" to describe them!

Bright Angel - as an older man in my mid-70s, I can tell you that songs and young men today don't express their love, feelings, and respect for the fantastic

They were coined "blue-eyed soul" because of their soulful voices. You are witnessing true vocal talent, showmanship, class and style; each singing and complimenting the other. I was 9-years old in December 1964 when they debut this song on the TV show Shindig. Our entire family was quiet, everyone hanging on each note. We didn't know it at the time, but we were watching history being made. Back in those days, a 45 rpm cost $1 and so did a great burger with all the fixins. So, the burger or the record? If you bought the record instead of the burger, it was a hit! Believe.

It was at a club in Santa Ana, Orange county, CA called Jon's Black Derby. The guy(s) who started calling them righteous brothers was a Marine from the El Toro Marine base, also in Orange county.
In the video from the Andy Williams show where Bobby says down south, he's referring to south of where he was standing (Burbank).
When they recorded Little Latin Lupe Lu as a duo, they needed a name since it wasn't the whole group. Bobby suggested they use the name the Marines were calling them. They figured why not it wasn't going to be a hit anyway. 😄

Two guys, a backing orchestra, no autotune that's how it was done way back then.
They had a number of hits that were all over the radio back then.
I even have this in my Playlist on my phone.

Greetings from Miami. Great Reaction to The Righteous Brothers-a true classic song from the 1960s.

Maddy...they were not brothers or related at all.I heard Bill ..the tall guy...tell the story of how they got the name. They were performing at a small club and after one of their songs a guy said from the crowd..." that was righteous brother!" and the name stuck .Your right right no auto tune back then just pure talent.. his partner passed away.R I P

Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were the Righteous Brothers, of course not siblings ✌️

Not Bothers. Bobby Hatfield tenor and Bill Medley. My sister and her girlfriend went out on a date with them in the 60s. That was just before they hit it big.

My main squeeze and I had been together for almost two years when this song came out. Same year I was inducted into the Army then sent to Nam. Unchained melody played in my head keeping hope that she would wait and I could return with all my parts. Both happened and still together but with 2 kids,7grand and 9great grand. Phew, there were those times when I thought I'd never make it. Still love this music.

Haha, love it . I saw them in concert. Fantastic how someone with no prior knowledge can watch and go ok, those are Rockstars!
I hope you've done some led zeppelin. Whole Lotta Love is sweet love song.

I watched this broadcast. They began in silhouette because everyone assumed they were black. The sudden spotlights genuinely shocked viewers but, of course, it didn't matter because the song was so good.. This shot to the top of the charts and stayed there. True blue=eyed soul. Loved your reaction.

Now that you have been blown out of your shoes and socks you can appreciate a GREAT song. BTW, that was a chorus behind them. One of the singers was a very young Cher.

It is a sad song - but what I have learned in life is that Love is more, much more than a feeling. Feelings do come and go. But Love stays because it is a decision, and a commitment to always treat that other person with love.

Hair, make up, glasses, colour palette, voice and demeanor ... Maddy, your style aesthetic is both understated and entirely, 'on point'. Brava.
I make this observation having had the privilege of having participated, as a judge, in local 'beauty pageants'...many, many years ago...

It speaks of a man who loves too much but jealousy sets in because again, when you love too much, the insecurity of losing the love of your life makes you act crazy sometimes. Listen to the beginning: “shadows of a man, a face thru windows” etc… Sometimes with Barry manilow you get lost in the magic of his music and the lyrics just slip you by… I love your reactions because it makes me relive those moments again. I love romantic, passionate people like you. PhoenixOne

Saw them in 1965 in San Diego with my high school sweet heart, the love of my life Sharon. At 76 she is still the love of my life.

(YOU'RE MY) SOUL AND INSPIRATION is another great song by the Righteous Brothers.
They are not brothers. It's the name of their act. Someone remarked after one of their performances that they were some righteous brothers after hearing them sing. So, they took the name.
Bill Medley, the singer with the deep voice, also sings with Jennifer Warnes on (I'VE HAD) THE TIME OF MY LIFE from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. You've been a busy girl. The numbers on your channel continue to climb. Keep hustling. Stay cool. And enjoy
