I cannot believe you talked about this book for half an hour without mentioning magical realisem. However, you had some interesting comments.

Concerning Spanish: the language allows for really long sentences. The use of gender in all nouns, the complex verbal paradigm, the linking of relative sentences... is allowed. Even when speaking, it is never-ending. The only way to translate into English is going to chuck it into parts, I think. I am not a translator, but I did study to a certain degree between english and Spanish. That´s why I usually say that a literary translator needs the talent of a writer themselves.

Anyway, a chapter within a novel should not be read on its own. Sometimes it may work (Penelope´s last chapter from Joyce's Ulysses, The Tale of the Wife of Bath - which basically is a short story collection), but it should not happen. I was so pissed off. I bought at the Barbican exhibition Berlin Stories. With that title, I took for granted that it was to be a collection of short stories. All of them are chapters from novels. I realised the problem because all the stories had no proper ending, no real presentation. Something was off. I feel scammed.
