She kneels at the monument, silently crying to herself. For months she has been mourning the loss of her hero and her true love, and praying that he would come back to her alive. Suddenly she hears a voice behind her. A voice she recognizes before it can even finish the first syllable. She turns around and rushes toward him, trying to hold back her own tears. As she wraps her arms around him, she cannot help but cry tears of joy, for her hero has come home at last.
*She brings her tea to the same place for so long, that she has stopped counting. Before kneeling, she brushes the leaves off the cushion.* Kari: "You always told me, 'That the duty to protect the innocent and weak is an important task'. But that this task would keep us apart for so long, is a great injustice." *She poured herself cup of tea, and wiped away a tear from her eyes before picking it up.* Kari: "If our 'great' leaders want war so badly, then they should do it among themselves, and let us simple people out of it. Farmers battle the elements as well as time. Doctors knowingly fight the ever losing battle against death." *she gripped her cup harder* "And THOSE are the battles that should exist!" *she shouted into the winds* *After a few moments she felt better letting out all her pain. She took in a deep breath to regain her composure* Kari: "I am sorry my love." *she whispered* "It is the only way to keep my sanity these days." *she sipped her tea, noticing that it was already cooler than she had thought* "I just keep wondering when you will come back to me." Terrek: "Do you have a cup for me as well?" *Kari looks up surprised, then smiles while her tears flow freely* -Me
Seeing all the comments from all over the world tells me one thing: unlike politics, music brings all races and colours together as one. How I wish the world would be this united. ❤️ I hope music will do that. Nice music
Part 32: Forgotten Shadows 36 days before the Fall of Stormguard, Storm Bastion They were digging through the rubble for survivors. In the last few hours, much of their position had been destroyed, but the gate had held, and the enemy had been pushed out of the Bastion again. Still their numbers were dwindling, even with a steady stream of reinforcements to add to their position. Tybalt never liked this part of the battle. As a commander, the aftermath was the moment when he was confronted with his own failings and shortcomings. That in itself was not a problem, but it felt like the Lord-Captain was never the one who paid the price for his mistakes. It was the men under his command that died, it was the people who they were tasked to protect that suffered. He didn't like that, it always felt wrong. It reminded him of the chapter's past, of the secrets they had buried deep, away from the prying eyes of onlookers. When he and his brothers had made their mistakes, they had not been the ones to pay for it. Others had carried that burden for them, dying in their stead, or suffering under their blades. Tybalt's own sword had tasted the blood of many loyal soldiers and citizens that had not been as blind as he had been. And he had never been made to pay for that. It had not escaped Ryze that whenever there was a lull in the fighting, the Astartes were overcome by a more sombre mood. They all started to quietly contemplate... well, something or other. She wasn't quite sure what it was, but if it gave the Angels of Death pause, it must be something important. Or at least something big. So the colonel had decided not to ask. She almost felt guilty to interrupt the Lord-Captain's thoughts, but a report was a report and he had been adamant that everything was run by him. "Numbers are in. 231 are dead, including 8 of your own brothers. There are 172 wounded, of which 35 are in such bad condition that they won't be ready to get back into the fight by tomorrow. As for the number of newly infected... it's up by a dangerous margin, I don't know exact numbers, but high command is considering whether or not to kill the sick, and burn the bodies so that they at least don't take others with them when they die." The Astartes slowly turned to face her. He still wore his helmet, not even having bothered to wash away the blood that stained it. "Is our strength still within acceptable parameters?" "Command seems to think so, yes." Tybalt nodded, the sound accompanied by the mechanical whirring of the artificial muscles of his armour. "Then we hold our position." Ryze hesitated for a moment, almost leaving, before changing her mind and asking her question. "Lord... there's whispers going around amongst the men. They're saying that your company would be of more use at another position, deeper into the Bastion. I suppose my question is: why stay here then? I highly doubt you've not noticed it, you've had more time in the Bastion than any of my men, so it can't have escaped you." "Our chapter is far from perfect. Don't look so surprised, it should be obvious at a glance. Our past is riddled with mistakes, whether you look at it from the perspective of the old Mistravens or the old Sons of Agrennon, both bloodlines made horrible mistakes. When we became the Blades, that did not go away. One of the mistakes we made as Blades, was made here, on this planet. We fought the Rotstruck Host and we won, but instead of pursuing the foe and finishing them off, we stepped back to lick our wounds. Now the Host has returned, and you and yours are paying for our mistake with your blood and the blood of your children. The least we can do is stand beside you and die with you. We are here to at least pay the price for one of the mistakes we made." The colonel seemed confused at his words. Tybalt was well aware that she had never been made aware of any of the Blades' sins. They were buried, and they would remain buried. They had worked hard to build up the reputation they had now. Where once they had been looked upon as slaughterers and killers, they now acted as guardians. Some even ventured as far as to say that they cared for the humans in their charge. It was better if they thought that. Better if they never understood the Oath of Redemption that Tybalt and so many of his brothers had taken. The truth was that they had spilled blood of entire planets, and that they died here to atone for that. Or rather, Tybalt wished he was the one dying for it, but as a Lord-Captain such was not his privilege. Some of his brothers had questioned if it had not been enough, of course. They had wondered whether the suffering they had caused was truly equivalent to the suffering they themselves had been through in the centuries since it had happened. Tybalt only ever answered with one word. A single sentiment, echoed by every one of their brothers that really knew the extent of what they had done. "No." So when the enemy came again, Tybalt and his men stood in front, breaking the tide and shielding their allies with their own flesh and blood. That was the least they could do to atone.
