One of the reasons I love this era of Animal Collective is because it reminds me the fairy tales and folk tales where everything was a bit off. It was happy and joyful, but something was twisted, something felt a bit too uncanny.
About the wig: Q&A from the Animal Collective forum. q : The first time I’ve heard about AC (three years ago) I remember that someone told me that the guys were sometimes playing masked. After that, I saw few pictures of them masked. wheeter (avey) : honestly josh and i are the only two of us who ever used the masks. Josh for HCTI and me for our first two years of playing. I cant remember though if he and i always wore the masks during the hcti tour. Noah used to wear a panda hood on his head when we first started playing then just kind of started putting make up on his face and once wore a white wig all the time when we toured in europe. That was a really weird time for noah. He insisted on us always calling him edgar and so we had to introduce him to all the promoters that way. I remember once he took morphine that i gave him and he was all drugged up when we were out with the promoters and it was really funny cause he could barely stay awake and we were all like “awwww come on edgar..stick with us keep going”. Kind of like what i sing in infant dressing table. We nick named our driver eric the red and he accused rusty santos of stealing money from us but it was really josh and not rusty. Brian has only ever wore that headlamp. He does it for the most part so if the stage is too dark he can still see his mini disc players and what track he is playing.
Sound8Vision this is from the original collected animals forum. Long before mpp, the guys used to contribute to it. Avey's profile name was Wheeter. He contributed the most. I was literally on the forum everyday back then and I can assure you this is 100% accurate
@@jesusitox12 I don't think he meant that Josh stole money, I think he was saying that Rusty was accused of stealing but the accuser didn't realize that Josh actually had it with him, which wouldn't be stealing.
Listening to this Purple Bottle version is weird. I can't actually tell how it sounded then because my mind is filling in the gaps of the studio version so I can't tell how different it was. Also, this was taped in April 2004 meaning the audience was coming off of Indian, had barely heard Sung Tongs, and got Feels stuff. Amazing that AC managed to get popular when they were changing their sound so much every year. Then again, maybe the differences in each era are more pronounced on the records than in their live shows.
Feels is my favorite album, especially because the songs translate a lot better in live performance. This is the real version of purple bottle, the album one is simplified
+ryan torgeson I know I'm a year late, but the intro is actually a common hymn. The most likely place they heard it was from "A Very Cellular Song" by The Incredible String Band since they've mentioned the album a few times (The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter).
Correction: the arrangement all these bands use comes from Joseph Spence & the Pinder Family (multiple voices), not the Joseph Spence solo arrangement. NB: This was pointed out by Conrad Alexander on this video 2 years ago.
@zonybenvid I was meaning of how influential animal collective can be, it's sick I like how they played this live and hearing the drums made me think of the dodos at the time.
@pleasureforever The intro is actually a verse from A Very Cellular Song by the Incredible String Band. They got it from the Pindar family from the Bahamas. If you haven't listened to them yet you need to check them out.
does avey got black eyes or am eye stoned..they look painted. i love how the breakdown at the end has more ' blues rock-y' licks in it, in this early version
Lay down my dear sister Wont you lay down and take your rest Wont you lay your head upon your Savior's breast I love you all but Jesus loves you best And I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight
@zomb3030 Haha that's what I was saying (and have been saying for a while) They've opened doors for a lot of artists, it's wonderful and there are I'm sure artists that did the same for them.
it's traditional. and it's usually associated with the grateful dead (who added it to their live repertoire years before ISB). but they shouldn't get credit for it.
Cette chanson me donne envie de jeter mon PC dans une poubelle et de disparaître dans le soleil couchant sur mon vélo, mais il en va tout autrement. Je dois aller travailler demain.. ;(
In this video? Or the whole set? I tried looking it up but couldn't find the setlist for the whole show. In this video though they just play The Purple Bottle fused with "We Bid You Goodnight" in the intro and "I Just Called To Say I Love You" in the middle
this live era is insane i wish there was more recordings

Flex Mentallo can this be verified as real some way?

@@KidEatsKeyboard I really fucking hope Josh isn't the type to steal from his bandmates or anyone else. That would be disappointing to learn.
Edgar!!!!
Remember watching this back in the pre-youtube days, on real player or something.
With Geo not there, you can really see how much he fills out their sound.
i feel you man
geo is the ultimate chiller
Yeah bro they need the psychedelic samples and soundscapes to give the full vibe. Geo is crucial to so much of their music
he was getting a masters degree in enviromental science or something. Him and deakin had almost full time gigs all the way until MPP
Geo was in school in case anyone was wondering.
"I love you oh but the AC Loves you best" 1:07

+BakedIntoBiggerPieces You just conversed with yourself.

This song was shot during the uk tour of sung tongs
they became popular after they started changing their sound so much, after feels
Incredible String Band
also the grapefilled dead
incredible string band, a very cellular song.
I know that feeling.
Glad others find solace in their own nonsense.
Animal Collective ... thank you.
i think if i could see AC in any era, this would be it. i love the setup, so intimate.
every a.c. fan must watch their full performance at the malta festival. it is unbelievable
I cant believe edgar is real im crying from laughing so much
SO INSANE. I can't even imagine what I would have thought of anco if i had seen them back then
Best Band of ALL TIMES!!!! Take this Beatles
holy shit thats the wig panda wears in ODDSAC
Where's Geo? At college?
hooooly shit the drummer from Oddsac during Tantrum Barb makes so much more sense now
great video! i liked how at the end dave walked up to the microphone and just waved bye. classic
Wish all their old stuff could be reuploaded in HD. I don't think I've ever seen the WCWAR video not completely pixelated and muffled lol.
tantrum barb wig
wow they sound great live... exactly the same as on album!!!
why do i wanna say they are the best band ever and masterminds of the psychedelics in all of us?
I'm seeing these guys play on september 5th! its gonna rock!
getting very excited for the upcoming gig!
Hey, the Deak's wearing the same jumpsuit he's wearing on tour now.
Keep in mind this is a month before Sung Tongs was released and they were already working on Feels. Amazing.
FAVORITE OF ALL TIME
I lovce when they cover We bid you goodnight
Dig on Noah's Hair. Totally coincides with ODDSAC.
Fucking love. anco live. been watching anco love for the past 2 hrs. It's all I do now.
YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
thanks
The song in the middle is "I Just Called to say I Love You" by Stevie Wonder :P
yeah but its modificated :), i love avey ! :D
This is great.
FUCKING BRILLIANT
far out, best vid on youtube!
the intro is We Bid You Goodnight by Crosby Stills Nash and Young for those wondering
+ryan torgeson I know I'm a year late, but the intro is actually a common hymn. The most likely place they heard it was from "A Very Cellular Song" by The Incredible String Band since they've mentioned the album a few times (The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter).
They're also huge Grateful Dead fans and the Dead have famously ended a lot of their shows with We Bid You Goodnight
@Zach Bergman holy shit man can you get me a link to that interview? Edgar...now that's a story I didn't know.
Correction: the arrangement all these bands use comes from Joseph Spence & the Pinder Family (multiple voices), not the Joseph Spence solo arrangement. NB: This was pointed out by Conrad Alexander on this video 2 years ago.
Woo!
@zonybenvid I was meaning of how influential animal collective can be, it's sick I like how they played this live and hearing the drums made me think of the dodos at the time.
classic.perfect
mind blown
I love his wave at 8:36 :D
as long as you enjoyed it, that's the point
Where's the rest?!
DODOS!!! haha AC reminds me of them during this era!! amazing grace right here.
Any combination of the animals in the collective can put on a kick ass show. Alone they pretty good. I wanna see all of them at once.
I love Panda Bear's percussion. He's consistantly ridiculous.
that end...
@pleasureforever

BEST OUTRO EVER.
la botella lila! i love it
WAIT they’re singing A Very Cellular Song by Incredible String Band NO WAYYY
At 1:49, the singing started with an echo effect, and then he disabled it at 1;54... why!? I really liked that echo. :(
my ears, brain, and heart all just jizzed, pretty much every part of my body except for the part thats supposed to
anyone have any clue what brand of tom Panda Bear uses?
Panda is wearing that wig from the Tantrum Barb scene in Oddsac!
@NEDM404 believe it or not ODDSAC was filmed/recorded over the course of a few years, like from 2004 to 2010. maybe that scene was really old
Actually a Bahamian folk song. ISB & the Dead probably came to it via Joseph Spence (his version is on TH-cam).
"the ac loves you best"
Did the grateful dead create the bid you goodnight tune in the intro?
does avey got black eyes or am eye stoned..they look painted.
i love how the breakdown at the end has more ' blues rock-y' licks in it, in this early version
LONG LIVE BIG BIG BEAT!
@zomb3030 pretty sure I heard in an interview the members of Dodos had been to Animal Collective concerts before they were Dodos.
EDGAR?
I was at this gig and I found it absolutely hilarious, is that the point?
get tha wwooaooaaahhh!!!! get tha Wooooohhhhhhhhhhh
god i love AC
"i love u, but the AC loves you the best" ❤ :)
Nice guitar catch! @2:38
to grateful dead- "the AC loves you best"
Could someone tell me what setup Avey has on the mic? IE effects et al
fasolplanetarium the they are using a Digitech VX300 vocal processor.
Lay down my dear sister
Wont you lay down and take your rest
Wont you lay your head upon your Savior's breast
I love you all but Jesus loves you best

that isb/dead intro needs to come back
i love panda's wig
what's the song in the beginning? it sounds familiar but i cant get it :/
the AC
How is it not?
it's traditional.
and it's usually associated with the grateful dead (who added it to their live repertoire years before ISB). but they shouldn't get credit for it.
Maybe he's hoping for another album like Sung Tongs?
la bottiglia viola!
Is that an actual song, or just an intro? :c
Cette chanson me donne envie de jeter mon PC dans une poubelle et de disparaître dans le soleil couchant sur mon vélo, mais il en va tout autrement. Je dois aller travailler demain.. ;(
where's the snare?
@pleasureforever me too. :]]
no geologist!?!?
ya i forgot about that. it appears to be the same one. good eye...
whats the name of the first part of the song?
0:00 - 1:26 is the intro.
Hey what songs were they playing?
In this video? Or the whole set? I tried looking it up but couldn't find the setlist for the whole show. In this video though they just play The Purple Bottle fused with "We Bid You Goodnight" in the intro and "I Just Called To Say I Love You" in the middle
yes, a wig of course :p
whats the first song they play??
th-cam.com/video/65jQXHIwy00/w-d-xo.html
the grateful dead covered it, it's likely that ac took it from them
early purple bottle
LMAO!
whats with the wig panda? :]
haha, Try and compare Joseph Spence's version.
SUNG TONGS WAS JUST DAVE AND NOAH
Avey at the end is so good. Should be a shampoo commercial or something.
