The Battle of Wizna was a fight between the Polish Captain Raginis and the German general Guderian. Polish positions are several unfinished bunkers over a length of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). They consisted of six heavy, eight small and two light combat bunkers, which were located in Kołodziej, Giełczyn, Kurpiki, Perkusy, Maliszewo-Łark, and also in an advanced position near Wizna. Its crew consisted of:
18 company of the 135th Reserve Infantry Regiment (the regiment was part of the 33rd DPRez. From SGO "Narew", constituted the staff of the Osowiec Fortress), commanded by Cpt. Wacław Szmidt ;.
3rd company of heavy machine guns of the fortress battalion "Osowiec" under the command of Capt. Władysław Raginis ;.
positional artillery battery (two platoons of 76 mm cannons) and a platoon of infantry artillery from the 71st Infantry Regiment (from the 18th Infantry Regiment, part of SGO "Narew") - commander Lieutenant Stanisław Brykalski;
136th reserve company of sappers commanded by Capt. Tadeusz Jurowski;
a platoon of horse scouts, 135th pp;
pioneer platoon of the 71st IR - commander of the second lieutenant Witold Bielecki.
In total, the staff of the position of "Wizna" consisted of 720 soldiers, including 20 officers, 6 75 mm guns and 24 heavy machine guns, 18 MG and 2 anti-tank rifles. Cpt. Władysław Raginis.
The following German units stood against the defenders of the "Wizna" section:
Fortress Brigade "Lőtzen", commander of General Major Otto Offenbächer, against the position of "Giełczyn".
10. Danc. (from the reserve of Army Group "North") under the command of Maj. Gen. Ferdinanda Schaal - in the direction of Wizna-Strękowa Góra;
20. DPZmot. Lieutenant General Mauritz Wiktoryna - on the Niwkowo-Grady-Woniecko axis;
The 3rd DP, commanded by Lieutenant General Leo Schweppenburg, constituted the reserve of the 19th Corps commander - armored general Heinz Guderian.
The German group sent to fight in the "Wizna" section numbered approx. 42 thousand. soldiers, 450 tanks and armored guns, 274 guns and mortars, and 195 anti-tank guns. Plus, air support.
The Germans did not expect such resistance. They thought that the Polish positions would take up quickly. Before the war, the captain swore that he could not be captured while alive. At dawn on September 10, a German parliamentarian appeared at the Polish bunker, giving Raginis an ultimatum that either the bunker would surrender or the Polish prisoners taken during the battle would be shot. Due to the fact that most of the defenders were wounded to varying degrees and the ammunition was exhausted, after an hour of reflection, Raginis ordered his soldiers to leave the shelter, and he himself was burst with a grenade. In the ruins of the command bunker on Góra Strękowa there is a monument - many years after the death of Raginis, a modest plaque was placed here: Passer-by, tell your Homeland that we fought to the end, fulfilling our duty
The polish held out as long as the french in WW2 and they did it with Russia and Germany attacking them from opposite sides. Remarkable considering they didn't have other nations giving any real support and their army was nothing on paper compared to the french.

To be fair. The French Army, at least those loyal to the government was only about 5-10% of the Army. The majority of the French Army was in the process what can only be called "moving out of France". So what France had do stop the Germans was about 20% of what Poland had available to fight the two giants.

Battle of Wizna was fought during the initial stages of the invasion of Poland and was the beginning of the second world war, so the line "A war, unknown to the world" means that the world didn't know what was about to happen in upcoming years.

That's partiality correct.
But the lyrics "A war unknown to the world" means for how the war would be fought. Everyone knew a war would happen. When the French Army gave up on their government when they refused to protect Czechoslovakia like they had promised. There was no one left in Europe that could stop the Germans who wanted revenge. Everyone knew the war was coming, but they all thought it would be a repeat of the first world war. Everyone, but the German military staff.
@@6th_Army That's true. Everyone did knew. I just always tought it meant that people were not expecting the war to be what it turned out to be. Compared to ww1, which was probably the idea of war in regular citizens mind, ww2 was way, way different.

In the Napoleonic battles, Napoleon said this: if something is impossible to do, give it to the Poles, they will do it.
Especially if their nations independence is threatened by it.
This battle has been called the Polish Thermopaly. A small force holding a strategic location against a vast enemy force to buy their homeland time.
However I would put forth it was far more courageous and frankly a much more impressive achievement. Thermopaly was called the Hot Gates, it was a perfect place for a small force to hold a line. A narrow pass between mountains and sea, near impossible to maneuver around without vast supply chain issues for the invader. It was a path that the Persians needed to cross.
Winza was a network of tiny bunkers from the a bygone era. It was lightly armed and barely manned. It stood over watch of a narrow but strategic river crossing. So the similarities are obvious.
But this isn’t the era of shield and sword, arrow volleys and cavalry charges. This is era of mobile warfare, of tanks and artillery barrage. The Germans had the firepower to pound the entire area with a blanket barrage (this is exactly what it sounds like). They had tanks that could ford the river and charge the bunkers. But the Germans knew pounding the hills would make crossing the area slow. Sending tanks would be costly. They thought they could simply swarm the bunkers with infantry and to be frank in any other battle that would be correct.
But this is Poland. This is a nation that only regained it’s existence after the Great War having spent generations broken into pieces and ruled by foreigners. This is a nation that believed in their absolute right to exist and would never again just accept foreign rule. A nation of men and women that would not back down until the time came to go underground.
I’ll end with something my brother from across the sea told me while playing a video game and fighting a much larger force of players. We where talking about war and resistance movements, about the morality of children fighting beside their siblings and parents when your nation is occupied, when generations have known what oppression, what a boot on your neck feels like. When you are born in an nation ruled by an enemy.

War unknown to the world could also refer to the fact that no one really talked about the battle and that for a very long time and even still in some countries, the brave defense of the polish people is summed up with propaganda such as "they tried to cavalry charge tanks LUL". In fact, this song might be the main reason that history is told differently now when it comes to the invasion of Poland, to the point where the Polish church even gave Sabaton a relic as thanks for their help with restoring the pride to the polish people. Not a joke by the way, you can look it up.

The Battle of Bzura is called the Polish Thermopylae by historians. The Reich lost 16,000 dead and 27,000 wounded. Polish Losses are 15,000 killed, wounded and captured. It was the fiercest battle in the entire September campaign (beginning of WWII). During the attack on Poland on the side of the Reich, the losses reached 170,000 soldiers. Probably 20,000 soldiers on the side of the USSR. The Slovak aggressors lost 39 soldiers and Poland lost 200,000 soldiers and 100% of the army and equipment. Poland was attacked from 4 sides
You want a real life super hero? Audie Murphy. He's the subject of their song "To Hell and Back", which was also the name of his biography and the film made from it. Fun fact. When they were making the movie he told them to tone down some of the events as he figured no one would believe they actually happened. I mean think about that. He was there, it was his life and he was like "Yeah, they won't believe it."
He's like Captain America if he didn't bother with the super solider serum and just jumped right into wrecking as much Nazi shit as he could find.

War unknow to world refers to german blitzkreig style of warfare (But Soviets used same style of warfare during battle of Khalkhin Gol against Japan 1st).

Something that needs to be said about Polish defense in 1939: WWII began barely twenty years after Poland recovered independence for the first time since the end of Third Partition 1776. For many of our officers - if not necessarily rank and file troops - the country's freedom was not an abstract idea, but something they knew not to take for granted and which they already saw the outcome of losing during their younger years in Russian/Prussian/Austrian occupation zones.
I mean, seriously. Short of killing his loved ones, you probably can't motivate a man harder than that.
It's a great song, I included it in a presentation I did two weeks ago. You should do Ruina Imperii next, but look for Piscator's video on that one.

He meant unknown to the world as in the war (world war 2) was so catastrophic that it was unknown to the world OF THE TIME. He's essentially saying "a war began that was so unprecedented that the world would be totally shocked permanently" or essentially a war unknown to the world.
The people know about world war 2, itd be kinda stupid if he meant that nobody knows about world war 2 🤣

Actualy its not a "lie" its just artistic parabole. Ofcoure there are no superheroes oa llove rthe world there are just brave people.. but world know about Polish defendence in 1939 mostly form propaganda both Germans and Allies (easy win, horses charges tanks, what is not true ;) ). In real history, despite of lack of modern equipment and just newly formed Polish army (Poland regain independenca in 1919 and in 1920 alreade hat do fight Bolshewiks) Germans took heavy loses because there ware more such "Wizna"'s and Ragniss. "Unless you are 40:1 you force will soon be undone" just show attitude of Polish army in 1939 "unknow t othe world". Raginis commited suicide after lost this battle.
Even after 1939 porlish ammy spread and create amries all ower the world to fight Germans (try "Aces in Exile" of Sabaton too), and ofcourse create rezistance movement inside Poland.

I know the Poles fought well and put up a better defense than France but the 40 to 1 story may be somewhat mythical. Not well documented and all sides used a lot of propaganda. Hard to know for sure what happened.
