This is one of those episodes that is completely unforgettable! So much learned here, so much history and so much love! We had no idea about the Chelsea Pensioners nor the Royal Hospital and we can't stress enough how proud we are to know have this knowledge! What an amazing place in the United Kingdom and we only wish there were several more to house ALL the Pensioners. This really touched our heartstrings as well as highly educated us. My dad is a Chelsea Pensioner and it’s given him a new lease of life in the almost 4 years he has been one.
My dad served 20+ years as an officer and medic in the Territorial Army (TA) and did two tours of Bosnia which gave him the eligibility to apply to become a Chelsea Pensioner. He was accepted in 2019 and moved in in July the same year.

Wren is probably the most famous of British architects historically. In addition to the Monument and the Royal Hospital, he designed today's St Paul's Cathedral, Kensington Palace, the iconic south front of Hampton Court Palace, and was in charge of the design team responsible for rebuilding over 50 churches destroyed in the Great Fire. He designed the Sheldonian Theatre at Oxford and the quad at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and hundreds of other notable buildings throughout southern England.

Wren by name, Wren by nature. The portrait shown in the video gives an idea of his slightness of stature, but in a day when 5ft 2in was the average height of an adult man, he is constantly referred to as small. His features appear pinched in the portrait, but by the time the portrait was painted, he had been working solidly for quarter of a century to rebuild London after the Great Fire. Add to this that he had been one of England's foremost mathematicians since early adulthood, a founder member of the Royal Society and a correspondent with most of Europe's leading scientists (including all of Isaac Newton's rivals), you can understand his tired expression.

Became quite pally with an old ex Indian Raj pensioner with the most magnificent old fashioned handle bar moustache I have ever seen. He used to bring me cups of tea & scones as I was standing at my guard post & chat. Nothing but mad respect for these guys/also now gals as they shuffle along in their red coats & medals.

At the annual Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall, London each November, my favourite part is always watching the Chelsea Pensioners coming down the steps into the hall. They always get a great reception.
I believe that the daily life there is still quite military and is especially suited to those who miss the discipline of army life and the ceremonial duties they had previously. They seem to have great camaraderie with each other and it must avoid the loneliness of old age to be living with other veterans who all have similar experiences.

I was in mh local fish and chip shop yesterday and they had several charithy boxes there. I had a lot of change in my purse so whilst I was waiting I emptied it all into several boxes, including money for I forget which charity but it said it was for the welfare and support of sailors and fheir families. Thre was one for the RNLI and some other charities. What a good idea. right next to the till on a shelf so its first something to pass the time looking at and I found it an excellent prompt to giving. I live on the Suffolk coast so see how hard our day fishermen and women work to even get their boats out over the waves from our low lying beaches here. I have often watched them and the RNLI.. real courage going about their daily lives. I also had a Victorian Gt. Grandfather who was lost at sea.. master of a ship off the coast of Africa and my brother was in the Royal Navy and n uncle in the RN during the war. They all deserve our utmost respect. I sailed a little when younger too as my partner had a yacht so have a bit of experience of how rough it can suddenly get out there. I knew someone I worked with was who was lost at sea in a freak accident sailing back from France. He fell over board in bad weather and his foot got caught in a line. It was sadly witnessed by his 14 year old son. It was too rough to haul him back on deck and he was dragged for a long distance like this, having died of course. Life is precious and definitely at risk out at sea.

Sir Christopher Wren designed the Hospital buildings as well as new St. Pauls cathedral. He was born on the 30th of October 1632 at a small village, East Knoyle, near Warminster in Wiltshire. He was one of the most highly acclaimed English architects in history, as well as an anatomist, astronomer, geometer, and mathematician-physicist. His father Christopher Snr. was, when Wren was a child, the rector of East Knoyle and later Dean of Windsor (at Windsor Castle).

The grammer school I went to was refered to originally referred to as a Bluecoat Hospital(one of a number throuout England). Normally now called Bluecoat Schools. Mine was Sir Thomas Rich's School in Gloucester. The word Hospital in the name of the schools had a similar meaning as with the Chelsea Pensioners Hospital, hospitality, much more a reference to hospitality as the pupils lived on the site of the school rather than suffered some ailment.

A friend of my late father was a Chelsea Pensioner, on a Sunday (before lunch) I used to take my dad down our local pub in South Wales to sit with all his old friends and talk about the forces, my dad being in the Navy and his other friends being in the Army and Airforce, it was always such a laugh, with them telling funny jokes and pulling each others legs about the Army being better etc., I remember clearly the Sunday his friend said he had been accepted as a Chelsea Pensioner, what an honour, happy memories, thanks so much for this wonderful video, I learned a lot xx

When I was in the Army there used to be an informal "sweepstake" in a lot of units, where (after paying into the "pot") you guessed the total age of the Chelsea Pensioners attending the Festival of Remembrance, it used to be announced by the commentator, the person that guessed correctly, or was the closest, took the entire pot.

In Scotland we have Erskine Hospital on the banks of the River Clyde north of Glasgow where ex and serving military personell are given tratment and respite if required. There is also acommodation for retired wounded servicemen and women where they live in similar circumstances as the Chelsea Pensioners. My grandfather was one of the first 2,000 personell to be treated there when he lost his arm at the battle of Ypres in 1917. He was 17 years old at the time.

I have had on and off contact with the Pensioners for many years.. They are a great bunch. The BBC did a documentary some years ago showing a "new" pensioner coming in to the hospital. He had lost his wife and had been having a bit of a hard time on his own. The change when he came into the hospital was heart-warming as you saw him slide back into a familiar military routine and you could see him relax and start enjoying himself..
A word of warning however.. never under any circumstances try to beat or even match a CP in a drinking contest.. you will lose!

When I lived in Worthing (on the south coast, not far from Brighton) I distinctly remember the day when a fleet of black cabs (London taxis) descended on the seafront and their passengers - Chelsea pensioners in their full regalia - disembarked. Apparently, the taxi drivers donated their cabs to take the pensioners on a day out to the seaside. They were having a wonderful time and were utterly spoiled by the reception the received from the locals. I don't know if this still happens, but I suspect it might.

You may like to look at the Yeomen Warders (not Guards) of the Tower of London who are also ex-service personnel and live within the Tower Complex, which was started by William the Conqueror in the 1070s. They are officially the protectors of the Crown Jewels but act of guides for the many tourists. The position of Raven Master is unique because if the Ravens leave the Tower the kingdom will fall. Also thank you for your respect for all service personnel past and present.

Given your interest in things military, I would recommend a visit to the National Army Museum, which (as was mentioned) is on the site of the Royal Hospital. Also, given that the number of spaces is far exceeded by the number of applications, only those with an exemplary military record generally are granted a place.
