    Matt Furniss has got to be my favorite composer on the Genesis/Mega Drive, I have loved his style ever since hearing Puggsy, the first OST of his I discovered, and from there it spiraled into just listening to every game that had his named attached to it, always the sign of a fantastic composer, and even with his recognition he has gotten from his SEGA stuff, I still feel he is underrated and overshadowed in discussing the sounds he made on that 16-Bit hardware, and hell all the early consoles and home computers he worked with, I love Atari ST stuff (the Fresh House track is killer), and dear lord his Amiga stuff is just as top notch, an absolute king on that sound hardware, and even if he is least fond of his C64 stuff, it still has a Furniss vibe I enjoy so much. Matt is absolutely talented across so many games he did, the entire Genesis section basically highlights what makes Matt one of the greatest composers on the SEGA hardware, and all the facts just compliment his unique achievements and understanding what he was working with, and it's appreciated as always with these Features having all the facts/info to put into perspective how amazing he was. And as with a lot of composers starting in the chiptune era, I wondered how his foray into redbook audio would do, and holy shit it holds up greatly, Nanotek Warrior has been one of my favorites of his and on the PS1 since this, along with Assault Rigs and Excitebike 64 (even when going back to limited hardware for the sound he exceeds).
    I am saddened Second Samuari didn't get to make it into the mix tho, because without a doubt, that is my favorite Mega Drive game he did, and sadder that was a PAL only game so its reach was even more limited but that soundtrack is to me his magnum opus on the console. And the Wizball remix is a fitting end to the mix, of course as the 2000's came, Matt was of many video game composers that stepped away from game music, but it's great seeing highlights of what he did after and even coming back, and anytime a composer actively posts there own stuff or still cares about the history and preservation of there work is wonderful, as was your Artist Feature here, wonderful as always, anosci (which I realize is probably the more proper way to thank you now, lol), another riveting mix and AF as always!

    Oh beans, Furniss has such a wild lexicon of musical compositions and arrangements. How you managed to narrow it down is insane, not to mention so many of his spins on existing compositions sometimes become iconic in their own right. This man made a boss tune for Zool on MegaDrive, and it remained so perfect it got reused in ReDimensioned. And taking a page from Wright's creative liberties with the Beast tracks in Lemmings, he got to add Mad Professor Mariarti's theme to the Acorn version... THAT WAS THE ONE I PLAYED AS A TODDLER!

    Always makes my day whenever you upload these Artist Features. Matt Furniss is my all time favorite Genesis composer, but I didn't realize his post-Genesis stuff was that good too!
    Oh, and I'm surprised you didn't use the Options Theme from Daffy Duck in Hollywood, that's kind of different from his usual stuff with the way the tempo changes, plus you could have compared it to the Master System version. Could have been a great segway from PSG systems to Genesis.
    And didn't know he started composing again! All I knew he did recently was that FMV kickstarter game he made.
    Anyway, keep up the great work!

      I don't think I'll revisit any artists, since there's so many other artists that I could cover instead. But yeah, it's always hard fitting so much music into a short video.

    One of the great game composer from the West! (you know what I`m said). ALIEN3, World Trophy Soccer, even Boogerman (never thought in childhood!!!), James Bond are incredible!
    Really love Lost Vikings OST, even if Matt just converted tracks from the SNES - Mega Drive versions I like a lot more, esp. from the Spaceship and Egypt levels!
    Thanks for the video and nice mix!
    19:04 I think It`s more the techno, not even hard-trance. Mortal Combat is the same - pure techno 90s music. Both tracks have well-known straight "flying" kick (bass drum), synth loops and arpegios. More than this, in 1996 hard-trance is only born, If I`m not mistake.

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I think "techno", I think "Detroit". It's a very specific, mechanical sound that doesn't match the more colloquial definition of "techno".
      Hard trance may not be the right term, but the arps and filter work seems to dip into that sort of territory.
      but, as I've said many a time: genres are pretty nebulous. we could spend hours debating the finer points of every genre like two monocle wearing mustachios comparing wines. :P

  • @jamesherriott
    @jamesherriott 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Pity there is no reference to his Acorn Archimedes soundtracks. Whilst the majority were from Amiga, many were enhanced or remade. On some (such as Oh No! More Lemmings), he threw away the small 6 song Amiga version and came up with a proper 25 songs soundtrack.

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, true.
      If you look at the "how it's made" for this mix, you can see I had some notes on his various Acorn works. I don't remember exactly why I decided not to include them in the mix, but the lack of any songs lead to the lack of any mention of the system.
      such is the struggle between comprehensive and cohesive, I guess!

    • @Saxdude26
      @Saxdude26 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The Lemmings arrangements he made for Acorn are - to this day - something I will unflinchingly defend. Acorn had no ports of the Psygnosis titles Wright made music for, so he made 5 brand new compositions and they are beautiful. The Oh No soundtrack has become THE WAY I need to play that game, the sound has become part of the experience for me. And then he got to do the same all over again converting the Lemmings 2 arrangements from the MegaDrive port over to Acorn as well. AND THAT'S JUST ONE FRANCHISE!

    Great Channel, awesome work. The music I prefer by Matt Furniss is the opening for OutRun Europa. I had a question that you might eventually know the answer to : I know the opening for OutRun Europa is original, but it seems that levels musics are covers from one another on the Amiga and the C64. Still, I can't figure out who covered who (Jeroen Tel made the C64 version). Any idea? Continue your great work. I had suggestions for you for artists feature : Hiroshi Kawaguchi (OutRun, Afterburner, etc.), or French outsiders like Jean Baudlot, Raphaël Gesqua or Charles Callet. Regards.

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm *pretty sure* Jeroen wrote the music originally, as he was involved with the canceled Outrun Europa, which he recycled for Turbo Outrun, and then went on to write the proper Outrun Europa.
      looking at mentions in magazines, the C64 version appeared before the Amiga version, which supports this. (September vs October for earliest mention of each)

    12:07 Ah, it's good to know the drivers Matt used support the SN7. It's a shame he never used the SN7 for anything on the Mega Drive, not even for hi-hats, cymbals, or even just extra polyphony. It's weird how he decided to make fake square waves on the YM2612 instead of using PSG or even combining it with the FM fake square waves. I guess he thought the FM hardware envelopes were more worth it.

    Thank you so much for these educational experiences! I'm recently finding a taste for "piano house", but I've seen you mention "hard house" in this video. What are some related genres/artists/albums/songs that you'd recommend me look up. Video game and non-VG

    • @GSTChannelVEVO
      @GSTChannelVEVO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmm, well, I'm kind of using "hard house" to just mean "house music that's hard". usually meaning house with some blending from trance and, especially in this case, oldschool rave. (think: 3 Thieves & A Liar, Altern 8, the first Prodigy album)
      So, something like Utah Saints (who did appear on the MK Movie soundtrack), CJ Bolland, some of the slower and less-acidic stuff from djax up beats...perhaps?
      (this is not to be confused with electro house, like Boys Noize or Justice)
      game soundtracks...I'd point you to the Ridge Racer soundtracks, Super Bubble Pop, and this one odd 1996 album called Club Saturn.
      that's kind of a jumbled mess but hopefully it can get you started on a nice journey of musical discovery.
      genres are nebulous, man!
