I “missed” Jennifer in her prime-in fact, I only discovered her 3 months ago. I am a big fan of Celine and only discovered Jennifer because I came across Celine’s cover of Power of Love including Jennifer. I couldn’t believe my ears. I’m 85 and have heard them all, from Ginger Rogers to Edith Piaf to Vera Lynn. Then Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Barbara Streisand, Dusty Springfield, Tammy Wynette, and Bonnie Tyler. Add Gloria Gaynor, Connie Francis, Laura Branigan, Linda Ronstadt, Rita Coolidge, Celine, Mariah, and Whitney and you have the lineup of the greats right up to Adele and Susan Boyle. But, Jennifer Rush has the all-around best female voice I have ever heard. Her operatic training adds an unmatched vibrato containing depth and texture. And she sings everything: opera, pop, rock, and ballads in English, Spanish, German, and Hungarian. She also studied piano and violin at Juilliard. She has written or co-written the lyrics and music for many of her songs, done duets with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, Elton John, and Brian May-sorry-Sir Brian May, Michael Bolton, and performed live all over the world-but not in America, except in March and April 1986 on the Carson show and the Dick Clark Show; that’s it. Why is she the best? Effortless high range: (look at Celine’s cover with Jennifer singing “Power of Love” to see the ease with which Jennifer handles the highest notes.) Listen to “Who Wants to Live Forever” (with or without Brian-Sir Brian-May) as well as “Stronghold”, “Another Way”, “Hero of a Fool”, “I Come Undone”, “Now That It’s Over”, and many more. With her operatic training (her father, Maurice Stern (Mauro Lampi) and step-mother Rita Loving), she developed a superior vibrato, appropriate body language, and perfect interpretation, and because she wrote or co-wrote most of her songs, she injects them with a personal load of musical endorphins that hit your ears and your heart at the same time. Yes. If Jennifer had decided to live her life in the US, she would still be in Las Vegas or on tour.

Thousands of women can sing high notes; some can hit the higher notes. But a note sung by an excellent female singer must have more than the simple act of ‘reaching’ the note. A note must have character, texture, meaning, emotion, personality, and must evoke a mood. This is what Jennifer does better than any female singer in history; every note is packed with all of the characteristics listed above. You don’t just hear the notes, you feel them, they talk to you; they tell you a part of the story. You become wrapped up in the world of all the notes and everything they evoke. Whitney, Laura, Celine, and Mariah are capable of hitting a single high note and a series of high notes. Jennifer has the talent and superior voice training to weave a story with those high notes; make them cause you to feel the story, the loss, the pain, the love, the triumph, the confession, and a long list of other emotions. Singing isn’t about hitting notes; singing is about telling a story with your voice; the notes are the words, the chapters, and the meaning of all which, the listeners hear, feel, and experience. Then there are the lower notes. This is where Jennifer cements her place atop the list of all-time all-around female singers. When I listen to Celine I start to sleep (sorry Celine). But when I hear Jennifer I feel goosebumps. Nobody sleeps when Jennifer sings!
