It's called 20 Volume Developer from Sally's Beauty Supply and use gloves when pouring because it can bleach your skin. You can use ammonia too but be careful with the fumes.

how do you get the machine to make such defined lines
It just does it for you. The steam stands up the fibers and you can tell the difference immediately.
So you still pre-spray the carpet even with using the steamer
You don't have to use any prespray at all. I use because I have it as part of the charge to the customer, but you don't need it.
I think using Freeze Off is the easiest way to get out gum in carpet. 😁
