I agree that Ultra Magnus has tons of playability. He has the mobile strategy mode, the service dock mode, and the aircraft launching mode, all taken from the Diaclone Powered Convoy instructions.
When I was nine (so, summer of 88) I sustained a concussion at summer camp. The first thing I remember after coming to was sitting in the nurse’s office and playing with the cab part of Ultra Magnus while waiting for my dad to pick me up.
Lately I’ve started getting into collecting more G1 stuff, and my latest addition is both the Reissue of G1 prime with the proper long smoke stacks, and an Original 1984 prime that I’m working on restoring using a chrome pen a new rub symbol, and new stickers! Maybe one day I’ll get an ultra Magnus to go along with my G1 prime!
I think out of all the G1 toy, this one is my favorite. My friend had him and he always preferred putting the armor on his Optimus for some reason. The toy being the same, it was added playability for free. We had such fun. Anyway, great nostalgia here, thank you. Great review!
Still have this guy, first release version, thankfully, even though I didn't actually have him as a kid. Got him from my cousin several years later, in a boxful of other G1's, including rubber tires complete METROPLEX, Omega Supreme, Jetfire, and most of the DINOBOTS, among several others, all for about $40!!! He was getting rid of a bunch of his toys, and knew I collected the G1 stuff, so he came to me first. Oddly, my Magnus came with 2 "belts" and a double set of giant bot fists or something that was duplicated, I think... He's in pretty good shape, but I'm SURE a clean up and retouch/decal replace would be good too...! One thing you can do to fix that stress mark though... Is take a hairdryer on high for a bit, and will sort of heal" the stress mark and soften the rubber tires a bit. Great review! HOOO-AH!!!🇺🇸
I still want one of these. I have a G1 prime re release from an anniversary that I’ve had since I was a kid. I still have the dvd and badge. Can’t say I did a good job keeping the stickers, weapons or hands though. I so wish I still had all my parts. Hopefully I can find one of those upgrade kits or get a good 3D print done. It would be awesome to have both complete with each other
Fortunately I did get that upgrade sticker sheet back then. They really help with the look to prevent him from looking like a brick.I even used the left over material a to trim up a replica for the KO WST version as well I suppose one could try to cut up some white electrical tape to try to replicate that look though
Ah memories like the corner of my mind. 😯 oops sorry on that. I know I had a first release cause had the painted face. Mine sadly the arm area snapped in either packing for the move or in the toy box as a kid. Can't blame on Galvatron as didn't have him. I still had the cab though and sometimes used as a Ghost Prime. I never saw Return of Optimus Prime as a kid but did on a rerun later and mind was blown. Great throwback review of a fun toy. Wish his newer figs ones could actually carry deluxe cars like this one could. Like a real car carrier trailer. Fingers crossed on ss86 to surprise us. (commander class maybe?) It still cracks me up the Stranger Things crew mucked up thinking Magnus was a battery operated toy.
Epic review Patriot Prime!!! That Toyhax sticker really helps Ultra Magnus's legs look more cartoon accurate compared to how he looks without it. Thank you so much for this insightful look at G1 Ultra Magnus, he is my all time 2nd favorite Autobot after Optimus Prime. :D Keep on being amazing.

This is a really helpful video, I never owned any of the old G1 Transformers and I recently decided to restore some of these ones I found on Ebay. I Found just the core robot of Ultra Magnus however I got confused why did I see 2 versions. One with rubber tires and one with plastic so I bought both. Now I know why it's like that and I really hope to find all the parts to complete at least one fully and get hands for the other one because both are missing hands
Good review I had him back in the day I also had an am/fm radio that was an ultra magnus head it was cool the eyes and forehead had lights that would flash to the music
My G1 Magnus was put together from lots and Wheeljackslab parts. Took me like 3 different belts/trailer hitches before I found one that worked (different release accessories didn't always work together). And mine has an old Optimus head. I really should get around to fixing that. And 3D printed fists for the inner bot! Also, had that un painted head, but it was an easy fix with a Molotow Chrome Marker.
that sucks that it took so much effort. glad you got it all figured out though. It's a real shame they change important details like that between releases!

In Marvel UK comics, Ultra Maggnus was a badass, he was leader of the wreckers and had some of the most epic fights against Galvatron ever written (Target 2006, Fire on the mountain etc etc)
Man, I would have gone ape sh*t if the animated TF movie came out back in the 80's and I couldn't have seen it in theaters!!! I was right there in the fifth row on opening night about to be traumatized AND have fun doing it. Still a great flick. I know I don't have to tell you to hang on to those comics. What a nice collection you must have! Wow, amazing what that large white trailer sticker does for his legs! Looks so much better. I sadly don't have my G1 Magnus anymore, but I LOVE my masterpiece Magnus (mp 22). He can hold four autobot cars and two people in the cab. Funny how similar the trailer transforms compared to the G1 trailer.
There is also a base mode for Magnus that carries over from his original Powered Convoy Diaclone figure, that was never mentioned in the Western releases - from what I've seen, turn the car carrier truck upside down with the ramps in front, extend the arms and bend them forward to support the back, and that's about it. He may have also have had a launcher on the underside for the Diaclone jet/chestpiece that you showed.
Idk if they have the instructions showing the old powered convoy modes but you can turn the trailer into a repair bay and a base as well as a missile trailer/ jet platform (Diaclone eagle jets)
Would love to see you review g1 trypticon . Curious if you toyhaxed him or not and if you added any extra decepticon insignias . I love adding those to my bots and cons .
I still remember when I got My Ultra Magnus as a small boy. It was Christmas and I got 2 Ultra Magnus'es. One had paint on the face and one unpainted. I wish I kept one in package, but My dad took one and tossed it. He did that to a lot of my birthday and Christmas gifts. Not all, but a lot of them. I still have the unpainted head in a box.
Magnus was One of my fave characters (his character profile then his movie portrayal) meaning I was determined and excited to get him as a kid. Mine was the Italian GIG version. Not sure if they had done other versions, but mine lacked windows, rubber tyres and face paint in both modes. Besides this, the missiles were replaced with the orange “bopper” rockets. Was definitely a bit annoying to find the toy varied so much from the box photog

A classic. Owned him. However, I like that the Combiner Wars version didn't have mini Prime. I didn't like that from my understanding, the mini transformer who was using dead Ultra Magnus body to pilot tho :p

What if Ultra Magnus was just Optimus Prime reborn? Like the original Optimus with a new trailer that could turn into armor that gave him kinda like a super mode?
I have that Ultra Magnus I either got him or Glavatron and Metroplex for Christmas when he first came out. My Magnus though is very bad shape I can't really keep him in super mode as u call it. The Prime cab to him keeps falling off the made body
I think what was originally supposed to happen in “Transformers the Movie” was Ultra Magnus was supposed to be a White Optimus Prime 18 Wheeler Rig and when he got the “Matrix of Leadership” he was supposed to change and become the bigger Car Carrier Ultra Magnus that we all know and love from the cartoon. It’s like how Orion Pax became the Bigger Optimus Prime. My guess is Hasbro already had got the greenlight to make the toy. While they were still writing and making the movie and decided to go with Hot Rod & Rodimus story instead, knowing then that The Matrix of Leadership would not work for Ultra Magness and so there would not be much confusion between Optimus Prime and his brother Ultra Magnus. They made him a car carrier from the get-go in the movie. That explains White Optimus Prime Ultra Magnus Toy. I do believe at one point maybe very early on in the creation that Ultra Magnus was supposed to get The Matrix of Leadership and it was supposed to work for him, and he was supposed to become the Leader of the Autobot in the Movie not Hot-Rod.
Its the same model as optimus prime just renamed and if they was going to use the same model as optimus then why they discontinue the original optimus prime because its the same model. I had this very same model for Ultra Magnus and I just painted him red but back then then why discontinue on Optimus prime then if they was going to use the same same model for Ultra Magnus. ?
I asked that very question at the Hasbro Executive Luncheon back in '86, and all they said to me was "Who the heck are you kid and how did you get past Security?"

Those G1 figures are so complex it's easy to skip steps in the transformations.

I had the later "cheaper" Magnus toy: he lacked the yellow windows and paint on the cab, but it did have a painted super robot head.

I was checking mine as I saw this review. Mine has the face painted, but the antennas are not painted. The White Prime mode is painted thankfully.

This toy feels very similar to Titan Boy/Great Titan from Choushinsei Flashman. It’s ironic, because Titan Boy eventually became a Go-Bot.

rubber sometimes likes to stick and kinda melt to plastic dunno bout ultra magnus but some of my figures suffer from this may not be an issue for him

It is a very square brick, with little posability, many pieces that can be lost and a good urgency of stickers. All the magic of G1, very nice!
