    I had the privilege of seeing the Waterson family in person twice in Berkeley Ca and Mike Waterson did John Barleycorn. Nobody could sing it like Mike and he sang it acapella. This is pretty nice too.

      Doesn't Duke William now live in a rather expensive property on the coast somewhere? He left the working class behind a long time ago.

    Always surprised that Eliza doesnt tear someone's kecks off and demand his undivided attention. There's so much pent up passion there, one could make toast!

    Ha. Was just about to commit that this version sounded to me like Indian classical music....and then the camera cut to the sitar.

    QUESTION: Can someone refer me to any recording of the song that predates Steeleye Span's 1972 version? And here, I'm speaking of the melody. Maybe the lyrics too, but primarily the melody.

      The Watersons on their album 'Frost and fire' of 1965. A.L.Lloyd even earlier.

    Probably the oldest recorded English folk tune, evolved and continues to evolve, but let's hope "Little Sir John" remains the same,.....same again please.

      This was shot during rehearsals for the tour. Paul Weller sang it on the album so I'd guess everyone has to learn at some point....

    • @theviper1999uk
      @theviper1999uk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clearly these are lyrics he has written to play with the format. A classic folk tradition to mix and match the words per event.
      There are no words to learn, only the song.
      Either way he's holding a sheet, it's what you do
