if possible, you should do a video going over a bunch of trick name origins. particular ones I'm interested in are gazelle, chinese nollie, casper, no comply, boneless, disaster, m80, and so forth.
Good idea. I made a note of it. I'm pretty sure casper comes from Bobby "Casper" Boyden, who invented tricks like the casper disaster and it went from there.
It's really late and not one that you named but I always thought stalefish had a good backstory as when Tony hawk invented it he was at a Swedish summer camp in 85 and they served stale herring
Skateboarding culture has some of roots in being an outsider, not caring what society has to say of you. If we came from that kind of mentality, why do we shame things like longboarding and penny boarding? The skateboarding community certainly thinks it looks ridculous but so did others who thought skating looked ridiculous back in the 80s or so.
+Rad Rat Video It got me thinking, skaters' community is in default about skating, not caring about looks, opinions and that kind of BS, because skaters like to be free and to be free you just can't give a fuck. I can understand posers are quite a force moving the skater community to get down some rules to distinguish them, but if someone really wants to skate he/she should have the freedom to skate the way it feels the best ;)
Been skating 30 years now and this is the first time I heard a name for the messed up way I skate. Mongo is horrible because tricks look messy with all the foot shuffle that goes on. The best tricks are the clean ones. I skate goofy-mongo and I always thought it had to do with me being left handed. I wonder if a lefty tends to have a diff stance.
Enjoyed this video. As a mongo pusher in recovery, I completely agree with the setup issue. I'm still a new skater, and I've been trying to get ollies down moving, and the mongo pushing just completely throws me.
I've pushed mongo since the early 90's when I started skating. I never caught any shit for it. And it feels awkward to push "normal" to me. I can steer just fine with my back foot.
If I ever end up pushing for a couple miles cross town, I'll switch though all 4 combinations of mongo, switch, and regular to get an even workout. Anyone who's good at mongo can also put their heel on the tail a bit and pick up the front truck. This is great for really rough spots (like gravel), kinda like a no comply thing.
One thing about mongo is when a young skater who just started learning is taught by someone to push mongo, but they should push the regular way. So, it may slow down their progression because they are not pushing the way they should be. Just a thought i've always have. And it may take them a while before they realise they need to not push mongo. Since they were taught to push mongo, they probably won't realise pushing that way is a problem until they get older.
Man, you are a legend. I only just discovered your Rad Rat video channel about 2-3 months ago, but am constantly watching your uploads. I also just realised why you looked so familiar... it’s because I used to watch your amazing flatground trick tutorials back in the day. Awesome to see you are still skating and uploading, please keep it up! Also we share the exact same views on Mongo pushers haha.
I really had a big struggle to quit mongopushing back in the days but once I learned how to push proper it really made a big difference for the setup time. Great video! Greetings from Sweden!
I'd naturally learned to push Mongo exactly for the reason that i could steer the board from the tail. The longer set up time is true, but its been 20 years and i'm not likely going to change push styles now
I'm glad you did mention the quick push into a fakie trick scenario. That always felt more comfortable when you needed a quick foot setup to me. Although since I rode goofy people usually thought it was just plain mongo until the trick. good memories...
Hey man my internet was down for a while but I was keeping up on my mobile hahah, just wanted to mention that I have used rails on a few boards and theyre great for street skating concrete ledges and things of that nature. You dont have to buy a brick sander and wax and spend time prepping a ledge or concrete barrier to be skateable you can just boardslide without the issue however if you want to do any truck grinds you'll have to end up busting out the brick sander
I sometimes push switch mongo because it feels so much more natural than pushing switch, but at the same time, it's much hard to steer while pushing, and to pivot back when I put my front foot on. It always feels off balance slightly.
I push mongo and have since I was a kid in the early 90's. I can push regular, but I don't feel as stable on the board that way. people don't know I push mongo because most of the time I run with the board in my hand and then jump on it. to each his own
I skated mongo the first 5 years I skated. Finally broke the habit when I quit and started over and made myself push regular. Made a big difference in trick setups
Thanks! No I don't think there is. You could try high top shoes but by forcing your ankle to stay straight, it can make you more likely to hurt your knee instead.
I found that my friends who were naturally mongo but then (mostly due to shaming) learned to push with their back foot, were later at an advantage when they got good enough to learn switch skating, because they already could "naturally" push when going switch.
I was never able to force myself to push with the right foot even though i'm regular. Just imagine having to push in switch for EVERYTHING you do. You can get confortable but never as confortable as you naturaly are with the right foot. So when i'm in the streets i push regular goofy and quickly change (pushing mongo for like one push) when i have to do a trick.
My crew pushed mongo growing up cause we had a lot of rocks where we skated so keeping a foot on the back allowed the front of the board to bounce over pebbles and not make us eat shit. After years of doing that the disadvantage tends to work itself out
I spent years trying to get my normal goofy push to feel natural as I came from a goofy mongo push and it’s like trying to write with my right hand (im a lefty).
I've always pushed mongo in regular, and pushed normal in switch because I have no structural integrity in my left leg. heck even today I spent about 20 minutes trying to push normal in regular but it's just too uncomfortable and awkward.
I can recommend learning to push switch instead of mongo. When you have to push to a far spot, you can just switch foot without geting too exhausted. Also, I find the thought of you getting so angry that you want to run someone over really funny :D Love the regular uploads, this is becoming one of my favourite channels!
I was pushing mongo for 2-3 years when I was starting and did not have any troubles, I was used to it.. But then I saw a video of me once, switche immediately.. Took me 3-4 days to get used to it.. now I CAN'T push mongo at all
Hey Rad Rat since I’m old now I’ve switched to longboarding long distances. I push with both feet. I just ended up getting bursitis in my heel and it will take a couple of weeks to heal so I’m mongo boy until then. Whatever it takes to keep my pushing and pumping going m
I started skating goofy because that was the way I was comfortable. But then I learned Ollie's in the grass and realized I learned them regular and had to relearn how to push. I'm ambidextrous, and in later years I learned switch 2 years before friends at the same level and I attribute that to probably naturally being goofy but accidentally learning a switch Ollie first. It was a clusterfuck back then but it definitely help me progress. Has this happened to anyone else?
I do not longboard and am not a longboarding advocate. I respect downhill longboarding though, fuk'n gnarly stuff. but in longboard mongo defense, your backfoot can clip a back wheel when pushing regularly.
I learned to switch the way I pushed instead of switching stances because I surf too so surfing goofy and skating regular would've tripped me out haha but if anyone thinks they're too comfortable skating mongo to change don't worry u can do it! It took me a few months of skating slightly slower to fully get used to it but it paid off. It even helps push back foot when skating switch.
I was about 10 when I started skating and naturally pushed mongo in regular stance until I learned it was a thing about a year later and switched to pushing with my right foot.
Learned to skate on my own and I happened to naturally push mongo so it stuck. I suck though so there really isn't an issue cause I'm not trying to look good.
Telling someone that naturally pushes mongo to not push mongo is like telling someone to stop writing with your dominant hand. If that's what's most comfortable for them then stop whining about it and worry about your own skating.
Nah, you'll injure yourself by pushing mongo. Better to tell people than let them look stupid! Besides, It's not even about looking cool so much as it's the wrong way to put weight down on your board while pushing. It just doesn't make any logical sense unless *maybe* you need to push once while riding fakie.
i thought i would never get away from mongo but 1 good week of forcing the other way and i no longer push mongo! it actually feels weird pushing mongo now.
I used to push Mongo since I started in 1985 but when I came back to skating I learned that it wasn't cool, sort of "recently" maybe, the last 10 years so now I always try to push regular style at the skatepark, even though I shouldn't give a s***
I put a tailbone on a 91 Hill Ear & I have been skating it 4 years strong. The tail doesn't wear. If someone put a tailbone on a flight deck, it would probably last forever. The only thing bad is you can't do nose or tail slide tricks.
It's at the point where I have to either push with my other foot or loose all my tricks. And what for? To look cool? Also when a person talks about setup time, they don't push mongo. If you actually push mongo then you can get your feet in position very fast because of muscle memory. Also turning isn't unstable, again your just not used to turning with mongo pushing.
LOL, I really felt the frustration in you when you said "I just wanna turn the wheel and just..." I feel ya bro. Drives me nuts. Especially when a person say's "it doesn't matter how I push, there's no rules in skateboarding" That's like saying, "Doesn't matter how much gas I got in my tank, there's no rule saying I have to have a certain amount of gas in my tank.(meanwhile, your driving across country and just passed the only gas station for 5000 miles) I wish they didn't take it personal when someone tried to explain how much better off they are learning to push "normal".
I used to push mongo and I'm so glad I got rid of that bad habit. Believe me, it's not about being a sheep, it's about having fun, being comfortable and progressing.
Another great video. Re: mongo, I’m old and now am into long distance pushing on a longboard, and while I skate regular I have trained my self to push and alternate w both feet so sometimes I turn into mongo boy. I agree though that on a regular skateboard and with tricks and all mongo can be counterproductive. Keep up the good work m
Now don't get me wrong pushing for tricks in street, regular is much easier, you will be more stable and able to respond more quickly after getting on the board. Mongo on the other hand can be faster as it allows you to take a full stride easier with a more open stance and a full leg extension in front and behind the board. For most people skating regular everything happens behind the front foot, this is probably because leaning over the front foot is a danger zone and you know that it could end up in you being thrown off if you hit anything. Mongo breaks this mentality as its your front foot and if your board hits anything it can swing forwards to catch you, due to this you naturally lean over your back foot to get the biggest stride you can. Now you can open up your regular push stance to get the same feel but the more you open it the more awkward it is to get to your normal stance as you get on the board and you might as well be pushing mongo. Even though you may be less likely to fall over if you hit anything pushing mongo ultimately you have less stability than pushing regular because your stance is more open to variances and your foot is situated closer to the back of the board this can cause the front to drift. In respect to this though on a more stable board like a longboard it becomes a more viable method as its less likely to drift and you can take a more stable yet still open stance due to the extra space. Not saying this is correct, just its how I feel skating mongo or regular which i do both (regular for tricks mongo for speed ^^)
the clips you selected of koston skating mongo are a little misleading because he's skating switch... when I was skating a lot in the late 90s, early 00s, that was totally acceptable (and that footage is from the early, mid 90s so I don't know if it's fair to use to illustrate your point)
Proud to push Mongo, nobody showed me how to push and I could lift the front wheels and pop over sidewalk cracks when learning , my first trick- one footed tail wheelie (manual) of course.
I know its been years, but theres one benefit of pushing mongo you missed: the guys who skate well who push mongo almost always learn no complies and bonelesses faster because picking their front foot off and planting it feels much mess awkward. But yea, mongo pushing is kinda silly
I like your theory about why they used to go mongo but only switch to show they were switch. I think their might be something to that plus it allows them to still always push with the same leg. In general, mongo is ugly and i think it impacts your whole skating style in general and should be avoided as a bad habit in general.
I have been skating for 30 years and started pushing natural but due to a huge injury to my lower left leg was forced to push mongo I never had anyone make fun of me ever " prob because I could still rip " so there is at least one reason mongo has a reason to be ok
I know this video is old but I started skating in 1989/90 and I have skating mongo regular the whole time it’s what feels right to me . I don’t really think there are rules to skateboarding. I had a lot of fun skating with my friends growing up and nobody cared how anyone stood on their board
There is a difference, just like when skating switch. Most "begginers" push mongo because it feels more natural and easy. Thats how the people who push mongo feels too. I dont push mongo myself, but this is what some of my friends who used to told me:
In my skate crew back in the day, if you pushed mongo during a game of skate your tricks wouldn't count. We had a mongo pusher in our crew who could never win a game of skate because his tricks were never considered to be makes if he pushed mongo. Haha
A mongo pusher that does original stuff still looks better than all those kids pushing “normal “ and don’t know about Rodney Mullen while they doing ollies and kickflips
Mongo looks cool to me and also the “getting your back foot set” thing is so minute it isn’t worth mentioning, skaters are constantly fidgeting their feet on their board before a trick. This video is stoopid
Believe it or not a lot of guys in the 60s and early 70s pushed "mongo" because it allowed them to do a lot of tricks more easily. Different tricks back then of course. Randy Colvin is probably the best mongo skater that was out there. Thanks to the popularity of the Internet and How-To videos, it seems to have mostly phased out. I can still think of 1 or 2 kids who have yet to get over their Mongo phase
Also, where do you get your freestyle parts from? I'm in need of some actual freestyle wheels (I'm currently using weird rubber freestyle-like wheels that grip way too much).
He must have been! I have some really crappy freestyle wheels right now, but I've heard good things about the ones from Mode. Another option is Decomposed.
Anklepants Skate Zine I saw a documentary that said he pushed mongo regular for a long time before he got famous and even when he was doing the fountain gap.
I'd rather watch Koston push switch mongo in 93 than a Street League contest
Arno Theadorno i agree , and Mike Carroll pushing switch mongo looks and has always looked fine and even cool to me
Street league is lame af
street league is pretty rad
I agree

I'd put money on Chinese Nollie being named as such because it's the crap/fake/cheap version of a nollie.
A steezy mongo push is better then an insecure regular push
No its not
Absolutely. If you more comfortable with it, go for it. Skating is about what works for you, not what some random tells you
Mongo, mongo, man.. I’m 30 and I still mongo, man
I don't push mongo but I think it looks steezy if you have a weird style and unccomon bag of tricks
Skateboarding culture has some of roots in being an outsider, not caring what society has to say of you. Douche comment.

I had to teach a kid to push regular because mongo wasn’t helping him do any tricks.
Little dude went back to mongo 😢

I didn't realise skating had so many rules. where can I buy a compendium of all the necessary regulations? I've been doing it all wrong :-(
lol!
Mongo is really the only “Rule” that everybody has. most other stuff is up to personal opinion lol
@@CJRussell Nah. Mongo only really became a topic post 2000. Prior to that people would call you a dick for hassling someone that pushed mongo.

I've pushed mongo since the early 90's when I started skating. I never caught any shit for it. And it feels awkward to push "normal" to me. I can steer just fine with my back foot.
A loading screen in Skate 2 says the only time it's acceptable to push mongo is when you're No Comply-ing (they credit that to Reda)
If I ever end up pushing for a couple miles cross town, I'll switch though all 4 combinations of mongo, switch, and regular to get an even workout. Yeah, it sucks. But I think it's worth the effort to learn doing it the other way.

I have a question, are there any tips for preventing a rolled ankle? Really enjoyed the video, good quality content without clickbait :)
Thanks! No I don't think there is. You could try high top shoes but by forcing your ankle to stay straight, it can make you more likely to hurt your knee instead.
Stretching is super important. Not just for gym class heros.
Thoughts on big shoe companies like Adidas, Nike, Converse, and New Balance involving themselves in skateboarding?

Skate a carbon fiber board with fiberglass for added flexibility its great for freestyle and trick/street skating.

Ill be honest, I've tried to push regular, I can't do it, I'll be a mongo pusher for life 🤣 after 20 years off the board, I think its too late for me.

Jamie Cairns I push normal but still I don't think there is something wrong with mongo
well you keep doing you, but ill keep pushing the right way so i can actually do tricks quickly if i need to

Do a video on why early grabs are uncool
Decided to start pushing mongo again after watching this video. Now to find some 90's 38mms wheels...

If your a mongo pusher naturally just say you skate the opposite stance and are just better at skating switch ;)

Proud to push Mongo, nobody showed me how to push and I could lift the front wheels and pop over sidewalk cracks when learning , my first trick- one footed tail wheelie (manual) of course.
why is their such a difference between tight, mid and loose trucks
I know its been years, but theres one benefit of pushing mongo you missed: the guys who skate well who push mongo almost always learn no complies and bonelesses faster because picking their front foot off and planting it feels much mess awkward.
But yea, mongo pushing is kinda silly
anyone else laugh really hard when he said "I just want to run them over"
I like your theory about why they used to go mongo but only switch to show they were switch. I think their might be something to that plus it allows them to still always push with the same leg. In general, mongo is ugly and i think it impacts your whole skating style in general and should be avoided as a bad habit in general.
Great video. You kind of convinced me to push the normal way, I'm trying to quit pushing mongo but it's kinda hard.
It's worth it though!
I actually like switch mongo, and I don't really have a problem with people mongoing, I kind of respect it because it's so difficult.
love the positivity in your videos keep it up
Thanks! In this particular one, I talk about running people over, but I guess it's still pretty positive!
I’ve noticed that allot of Japanese street skaters have been starting to use skid plates. I personally love them. Always rails. lol
I tell my friends just to learn to push switch, it looks way better for fakie tricks.
I've always pushed mongo switch, never intended to it just happens.
1:31 Chill Rad, chill LMAOOO
i love watching mobgo, its wacky and unpredictable. i also love watching sloppy skating so i guess its just a preference lol
mongo is pretty cool in my opinion. older videos have a lot of it. so why not?
Nelson Gil josh kalis still pushes switch mongo,so that's good enough for me,dude's a legend!
Why does no street skater use tail skids? It literally makes your board last forever
There is a difference, just like when skating switch. Most "begginers" push mongo because it feels more natural and easy.
Thats how the people who push mongo feels too. I dont push mongo myself, but this is what some of my friends who used to told me:
thanks man! You're awesome!
+RobTheColone You're welcome bro!
Solid vid man
In my skate crew back in the day, if you pushed mongo during a game of skate your tricks wouldn't count. We had a mongo pusher in our crew who could never win a game of skate because his tricks were never considered to be makes if he pushed mongo. Haha
Nice!!! You got a Mode Skateboard! Same, here!
Cool! I love Terry.
Terry Synnott is awesome! I am real glad he made Mode!
When I was a kid I had a "how to skateboard" book that said to push mongo
There was an interview in (I think) Skateboarder Magazine where Chris Cole was in favor of mongo. He could have been joking, though.
Anklepants Skate Zine I saw a documentary that said he pushed mongo regular for a long time before he got famous and even when he was doing the fountain gap.
cole was a mongo dude. the only reason he started not pushin that was is they wouldnt bring him on the team if he kept it up
what about mall grab? why do they make fun of it
Thanks for asking! I'll talk about this soon
