- A look at the Victorian Cobblers shop at Blists Hill Victorian Town in Shropshire, this is typical of old cobblers shops that used to be in lots of towns and villages, in fact I can remember having my shoes resoled at a similar cobblers shop in the village of Penshurst, Kent, UK.
Great video - must be a new addition since we were last at Blist Hill. My grandad was a cobbler / shoemaker..his old machines are in our city museum.
My grandfather was a cobbler. When the business closed down he bought up the tools and machinery from his boss and moved them to his garden shed. It was made of bricks, so perfect for a little workshop. He used to repair the neighbours shoes as a little business whilst working full time in a tool shop. I suppose he learned the trade in the 1930s just before he went off to war. I just to go into his shed and play with all of the tools when I was a kid. I still have his Singer sewing machine.

Shropshire! Birthplace of Charles Darwin! Many other cool things too, I'm sure. But that is my favorite bit of trivia of Shropshire. (and only, if I'm honest.)
I bought my Singer 29K-58 from a little closed down cobbler shop. The shop was just a small oddly wedge shaped space in an ancient brick building, but it had been in business over 100yrs and run by 3 generations of family. Our modern "throw-away" society eventually did it in.

Been there fascinating place. I remember as a kid we would watch our local cobbler through his window which faced the pavement as he tacked on heels and soles. I also remember how sharp the knives were as he cut off the surplus leather. He could work very fast.
Always reminds me of the old joke about the man who took his shoes to be repaired. He then went away to sea and forgot about them. When he returned 10 years later he found the ticket and went back to cobbler. He handed the ticket in, the cobbler looked at the number and said, "they'll be ready next Tuesday".
Reflects the fact you made many trips before they were finally repaired!

Dreamt of becoming a Cobbler as a kid. ....having a small old shop as they had in years back. Had two older men(brothers) having a shop in the basement of the building where I lived as a boy. Used to go and visit with them many times. Remember the smell of leather. Seemed to be such a lovely and cozy place to be spending the days at work. Working with your hands.
Don't know what happened to the brothers. Don't see that kind of small Cobbler shops any longer. Sadly.

A lot of it is on a Sony AX53. Blists Hill was shot on a small old Sony Camcorder...CX340?
When we were kids in grade school, the coolest of us would pound in those three- pronged furniture glides into the heels of the shoes, making an authoritative tap noise whilst strolling down the hallways, wouldn't even think of doing that now to your $200 Air Jordans. ☺
Good story, and I had a teacher that went tap tap...he was a good sort!
When I was about 10 years old my family moved into the last house on the left hand side of Payton lane. There was an old man that lived in the last house on the right and at the very end of the lane, between his house and ours was a cobbler's shop about the size on the one in this video. The proprietor was none other than the man across the street. I think all the tools and machines were older than the man himself. I would sit quietly in the corner and watch by the hour. Thanks so much for this nice little trip down memory lane.

Hi yes it's actually a picture of our ginger Tom cat done in a cubism style of painting...one of my son's was researching different art styles and tried painting different things in a particular artistic style. The film was on how easy to use Cad software! Should have been cat software!!
