Thanks James for a sentimental trip down memory lane for me. My late godfather had one of these (saloon) for many years and it lasted very well in Cyprus where rust isn’t an issue. He stuck with Audi for the rest of his life, buying a later 100 and A4.
my late grandfather also had a later 100 for quite a while, so in a sense it is a trip down memory lane for me as well, since back in the day there were still quite a few of these around
Jay, small correction, that car is a facelift model of the Coupé S which means its 74 or later MY (The front fenders got more diamond cut compared to older rounder ones, also the front grille changed a little). I myself am a proud owner of one 73, pre facelift model. Greetings from Estonia, keep up the good content!
I've always had a soft spot for Audi's, because, from the late 70's to the mid 80's, my dad had them as company cars. The first one was a dark blue 1978(I think) 80L B1, which I don't remember much about because I was very young. The first one I properly remember was the second one, a silver 1982(X), 80GL B2, with a green chequered interior and green dashboard. Then by 1984 he'd obviously moved up the food chain a bit, because the last one was a dark metallic red 80 quattro. I have very fond memories of being in this car with him, (minus my disapproving mum), as we lived in a village at the top of a hill, surrounded by some great twisty roads, and you could corner at ridiculous speeds in this thing, then he'd get all four wheels off the ground over the two hump back bridges down the bottom. Basically an ur-quattro, minus turbo and with a saloon body, but for the day still pretty quick for a four door family saloon. Then, for some inexplicable reason, he goes all sensible when it's time to change, and gets a Volvo 740GLE. Don't get me wrong, I really like Volvo's, especially the 240 and 740, but going from a five cylinder four wheel drive Audi, to a great big Volvo, and a estate at that, I can't help but think my mum had a lot to do with the decision. Probably because she was fed up with telling him to slow down all the time. I was trying to persuade him to go for the Audi 200 Avant quattro, but it wasn't to be. And I know he never liked the 7 Series. Nice car, but handling wise, miles apart from the quattro.
Where I grew up in Middlesbrough in the 1970's, it had a huge VW / Audi dealership so Audis were a reasonable common sight. Great looking cards the early Audi's.
When I walked back from primary school there was always one standing in the driveway in our neighborhood. Still can remember it today. At this time it was really looking cool to me.
One of my teachers had the saloon version, which I thought was rather subtle and elegant at the time - then I spotted the coupe driving through town and was smitten. Even now, I love the look of them.

Lovely car. The first Audi 80/100 and the transition flop VW K70 meant a great deal for the later development of the Golf and Passat. More of this stuff! Please...
Tried to talk my father into buying one of these when he changed his 1100 in 1974 so he went and bought a Marina Coupé instead because it was cheaper to buy and insure and he didn't want a foreign car. I always thought the the Audi Coupe was a stunning looking car and the shape has aged really well.
Used to own a 100 Coupe S , a 1972 model in off-white , from 1981-1982.. I was 20 yrs old and although the car didn't feel as sporty as the Ford Escort Mexico it replaced , I felt very much "Man about Town" due to its ' Aston Martin / Fiat Dino Coupe looks. Mind used to smoke abit too, possibly due to valve guides , but couldn't fail to get noticed in it , particularly with the girls! Spent almost as much time on the back seat as in the drivers! And all for £400 from a local garage! Wheels look standard BTW. Nice looking car.
We had two of these when I was a kid - a petrol blue early one - KKP414L and a VERY late red one - LPF486P - I actually had the red one myself when I was around 18 years of age (long time ago now) - loved them - this one is in fantastic condition!!
08:43, that car's dashboard has a gap above the wooden panel from left to right that lets air in.... need to close the windows 3/4 way and the wind will blow you out the seat. Had three of those, really nice cars, first two had inboard brakes, and the last, similar to this one, with "facelift" front end, in automatic.
I've never been in the first gen Audi 100. The next gen, the C2 or Type 43 however.. Been in both the 1005E and the 200 Turbo. LOVELY cars. Still very high on my dream car list. Love the looks, remember them as great cars to be in, and those 5 pop engines..

An interesting and very welcome video that fills me with nostalgia. You almost sense the aroma of the interior as you watch... These were indeed a rarity in the UK and were pricey for what they appeared to offer on paper. You are right... In the UK they went through VW agents. I'm not sure about the notion that the C1 first put Audi in the Daimler-Benz and BMW sector... It was the first big step forward, but people traded "up" to a W114 from this model.... By perception at least in Germany. And back in the early 70s, BMW were not what they are now. There wasn't really a model for the C1 to compete with directly.... I think this was the model that moved Audi to a position from which it could climb above the more mundane Opel models and open the way to the social-climber Audis of the 80s and 90s... But in the late 60s when it emerged and the early 70s when it became a less uncommon sight, this was not yet an M-B or BMW rival.... More a marker of future intent.
Great video, thank you! Brings back some memories of a car that was very special for me. My Mum and Dad had an Audi 100 Coupe S when I was a young boy. It was metallic green/blue, similar to that in the video and had a dark green velour interior. He bought it new from a dealership in Lye in the West Midlands. I can't be sure if it was an Audi dealership. I think he was looking for a Mercedes at the time (possible in a dealership next door), when he can across the Audi Coupe. As a young boy I loved the car, it was a real hero car for me and it certainly turned heads in the 70's too. One of the other features that it had was crumple zones, which unfortunately my dad made use of.. happily my dad was absolutely fine after the incident, but the car was never the same again, even after several visits to the dealer and a visit to Germany. He then changed it for the boring Mercedes saloon!
Jay, I have to say your German is surprisingly good as far as accent is concerned. That said, I don't think "Inspector" was a rank in German police back in the day. "Commissar" would probably have been more accurate. either way you nicely got your point across. and I for one very mch appreciate that you are driving older cars as well. Partly because of nostalgia, and partly as celebration of automotive history.
@@JayEmmOnCars I doubt that is being taught in any regular school anyway. As such it is not much of a surprise. My father and grandfather just happened to have been police officers. Perhaps that is why i notice such things.
As far as the car's road manners, keep in mind that West Germany had unlimited Autobahns, so I'm pretty sure that this car would have had good manners all the way up to it's top speed, even if it was just 105 mph. The other thing that I noticed is that you can see the same design language that carried over to the late 70's Audis. My Mom had an Audi Fox (I think the US's version of an 80), and there were a lot of similarities in the cockpit and styling with this 100. But the engine at that time was shared with VW Rabbit/Golf.
Frau Ost here - this was the very car my father was about to replace his Capri 3-litre with, when he encountered one of the first Range Rovers on the road which proceeded to give him a proper run for his money. He was so impressed that the Audi plan got shelved and it was Range Rovers from then on. BTW I think "N" is the 1974 model year.
I've always loved these 100 coupes. I can see some of it's rear styling in the A7. This is the car that got away for me. Many years ago I was outbid on a poor example of one in a car auction, I just wish I'd went a bit more. Nice examples go fot the thick end of 30K. Nice review. Thanks.
This comment. I absolutely love the look of the A7 and I can definitely see that too. The front end of the 100 just has pure 70’s muscle car vibe in a very good way too, too bad it didn’t come with muscle, but it doesn’t make me not want one.
Beautiful car has always been one of my favourites a baby Aston Martin DBS. Audis were sold in the UK through combined Volkswagen Audi (VAG) dealerships I had a MK1 Golf back in the 1980s and remember having my car serviced at my local VAG dealer Whites of Wimbledon
Anorak fact about the 100 Coupe. In 1973 Porsche converted two Audi 100 Coupes equipped with 928 prototype V8s engines with power of 350 hp as well as the 928's rear wheel drive running gear as part of its development programme.
Thank you for this, as an young teenager just developing his car nut status, I loved that a work colleague of my father had one of these Any plans to drive a C2 Audi 100 ? For me it was that model rather than the “ aero “ model that really started the modern Audi character

@Edward Gross not really. You see, mustang created a new style of car called a pony car. Back in the day my Dad was focused on buying a 100 Coupe S and referred to it as ' The working man's Aston Martin'. Unfortunately he bought a low mileage red Ford Capri 1600 GT with a black vinyl roof instead at a bargain basement price from a works colleague who lost his driving license to drink driving. I used to have a Baby Blue Coupe up to about 8 years ago. Merc engine and Pinto style tank behind the rear bumper. Hesitation is most likley fuel pump failing. I ended up with a click clack unit. It also had inboard discs up front. I commuted from Oxted to Peaslake in it when I was an Architect. Pretty little thing but in no rush to have it back.
What an utterly neat car! Living in the midwestern US I'd never heard of this before. Not going to go out of my way to get one (BMW Z3 is my current affordable desire) but it's fun to see where the modern Audi comes from. Thanks!!!
Fantastic review brought back many happy memories from the early to mid 70s for me! Would be great if Audi could lend you a 100 5E or something from the late 70s...
At minute marker 3:28 the engine shown is not the same as the one that was shown in an earlier moment of the same video. It looks like the engine from an Audi 80.
Steering wheel design has gone backwards since the old days. It's fair to say there was no bad looking 100. Anyone remember the 200? Those mirrors are so cool. To adjust roll down the window and manoeuvre by hand. Ahhh the old days.
I imagine in the early 70's the 100 series would have been more of a competitor to the Opel Commodore, anyone remember the GT-E coupe. Closest thing we got a Dodge Charger! I think the BMW 1602 2002 series cars, whilst pretty were very different beasts and Merc's even in poverty spec were a lot more Deutschmarks and the W114/6 coupe's were real premium cars.
I owned the face lift version ‘N’ reg ( HOC770N )100S in factory black , 1870cc 3,500 miles in the early 80’s , nail most 2litre cars and bigger performance wise
Gr8 video - is it a 72 car on a 75 plate? - 1971 UK Motor Show Guide has the Coupe S launch price estimated at £2,500 while the saloon was only about £1780
Cool for Cats 😻 - nice one...... The Sweeney's doing 90 coz they got the word to go......... Another enjoyable review there. Just a detail that I have to query and it could be that I've made a mistake - a 1972 vehicle should have a K or L plate suffix whereas this is an N (that would be 1974/1975). @JayEmm - do you have an answer to this? I'm not picking fault at you, just simply curious as to the discrepancy. Also - a request.... two actually...... Please try to get your hands on the "not so well known" Audi 90 and 200 models. That would be awesome. I'm led to understand that the early 200's were front wheel drive; latter models had the infamous Quattro drive train, methinks. As for the 90 - only ever seen ONE on the road. Thanks for the upload 👍👍👍
There used to be an old couple who I saw regularly around Cambridge in the 90s who has a metallic brown 100s Coupe. Is the video in Norfolk by the way?
Nothing like a Mustang , back then Audi made humble cars , Mustangs, Camaro's ,GTO's and Roadrunners etc were been street and drag raced, now Audi owners act like Audi have been making badass cars all-day

Hi James. I think this Audi was contemporary to the original (fastback) Granada Ghia and I always thought they were both stunningly beautiful cars.
Does anyone else get sad thinking about all the cool old cars like this out there that got scraped at turned into a kettle?
Very nice review. You seem to be finding your inner Henry Catchpole, and that's a good thing.
I had the slightly smaller 80GT, '75 model. Fab motor, swapped it for a minivan when I started my own business....
Fantastic review brought back many happy memories from the early to mid 70s for me! Would be great if Audi could lend you a 100 5E or something from the late 70s...
Great looking car, and great pace James!
A very good looking car for the period.
The "Understatement TH-cam Comment" here!!!!
The rear and rear quarter reminds me of the Fiat Dino coupe. That 70's clear glasshouse is very warm,ja? You should call him Johann.
Utterly lovely thank you James
At minute marker 3:28 the engine shown is not the same as the one that was shown in an earlier moment of the same video. It looks like the engine from an Audi 80.
Sounds super cool. Reminds me of that period's Passat
Fantastic! Random thought but I'm sure the young lad in the 80s film Fright Night drove one of these... Must have been rare in the US.
Brian Clough had a Audi 100 in the early-mid 70s
Yup you're right. This is definitely the car Gene Hunt would drive in the 70s if he was German.
What a cool car !!
Gorgeous.
Extremely similar to my old 1973 Opel Manta 'A'.....
nice cars, spare parts are very hard to get a hold of
Gear lever is direct because of the transaxle
That's a nice car! And 112 is more than my Honda 30 years later.
The pedal spacing looks mad lol do love this car though I’d happily swap my Skoda and a4 for it any day
Dream project car
Looks like a grown up Alfasud or teenage a DBS. An absolute gem.
Steering wheel design has gone backwards since the old days. It's fair to say there was no bad looking 100. Anyone remember the 200? Those mirrors are so cool. To adjust roll down the window and manoeuvre by hand. Ahhh the old days.
3:33 I feel an Ashes to Ashes reference coming on...
The most good looking DKW ever.
How did the radiator move?
That colour. 🤢
At the time I got my drivers license, my father had one in dark brown metallic.
It was a dream of a car to learn how to drive in. 👍🥰😎
That is so cool
We need this West Germany Cop TV Show ... now!
Funny to see the simularities with my 1973 rhd VW k70. Only with the k70 they took the time to modify the wiper mechanism to rhd.
Nothing like a Mustang , back then Audi made humble cars , Mustangs, Camaro's ,GTO's and Roadrunners etc were been street and drag raced, now Audi owners act like Audi have been making badass cars all-day
I mean it's technically a pony car. Secondly Audi has been making good cars since the 80s.
@@gsw8734 Audi Quattro was pricey and bought by bankers and solicitors, yes great car but pony cars were aimed at youth and had sporty aggressive looks. The Capri looked much cooler than this Audi.
Men or youth did not go wow look at that Audi but Pony cars and Capri's did.
@@gsw8734 no it hasnt, 80s Audis were garbage
@@andies9817 No just no. Judging by your previous comments you just come on here to slag off people's cars lol.
@@gsw8734 lol 80s Audis were not any special, below average, stop insulting others, have you even born before 80s? do you have any expericne of those? and what previous comments you mean Im slaggin peoples cars? wtf
Lovely car.
My ex girlfriend saw this exact car on the motorway today! I had absolutely no idea what this car was at first, I had to do some research.
Could the 3 people (at time of posting) who thumbed down please explain? Just curious. J keep up the good work
