The prayer: all right let's talk about how important this is to Dean's character development. The man who never believed in angels, thought praying was like begging, and doesn't like to show his real emotions, goes to the place that is his and Cas', where he said he felt pure, the land of monsters. And he gets down on one knee, crying, unprotected in monster land when he thinks he won't get his best friend back. And he prayers to Cas, the only angel he's ever prayed to or about when he lost him, and tells him all of his feelings, his doubts, and says he was wrong and sorry and loves him. He may not say the love you part out loud but that is his best friend, and he's family - it's obvious in what way but people still want to argue platonic. And he wants to say more but Cas cuts him off. And he runs to him, hugs him tightly to his body cause Cas is there, he isn't dead. And he's back at Dean's side once more. I wish we could see Cas when this prayer was happening was he fighting the leviathan? Was he responding as Dean said something. We know that angels and specifically Cas can feel longing, so that emotion must have been so strong at that moment.

The best episode of the season. The parallels of what is happening with Sam and the episode The End with Dean. And we finally see Dean and Cas get back together!! Took them long enough!
Three brothers is a hilarious comment. Especially when episode 18 hits. And especially since there is an actual third Winchester brother. Cas is family but the "brother" part....

The show's family theme is great but it annoys me that people constantly have to give them roles - like Jody as their mom I've seen people say a millions times. She is close to their age and a fellow hunter who is family and understands them but not their mother. And with Cas' romantic love declaration, it makes me laugh when people call him a brother.

I'm late so people probably won't see this but this episode is just so mesmerizing. Dean's prayer/confession. When Sam and Dean fight they come back together easily and say sorry and hug and go were family. And move on because they are family, they will always come back. But Cas leaves! Through everything, all the fights, mistakes, miscommunications, Cas always comes back. But he leaves, and Dean can't stop him. And he realizes family isn't gonna work for Cas. Notice he doesn't call Cas family here. It is more then that. Dean has to become completely vulnerable in monster land, in Cas and Dean's place, and he gets down on his knees, crying, and prayers to Cas. Tells him everything he feels. Two flawed, vulnerable people who love each other so much coming back together. And Cas has to stop him. He can't hear what Dean needs to say to his face because they aren't done yet. They have to defeat chuck. Cas can't be happy yet or the Empty will take him. God, these two are so freaking well written. And the show sucks at romance but hit damn they DID write the best romance. The shield of God falling for the Michael sword in every way.
Ok. The parallel of this episode and the end. And why Chuck never gets the brothers, not really. Both episodes show angels/supernatural beings showing the future to the brothers to try and control them. They do this by showing how bad the future becomes, how they lose everyone and how that makes them "give up." But the brothers handle each scenario is completely different ways. In the end (5.4) Dean is shown what would happen when Lucifer takes over Sam. Zachariah shows him to try and get him to submit, to be Michaels vessel. He chooses to stay with his original choice. He will not be Michaels vessel, he will find another way to save Sam. He becomes friends with Cas - I would say before the episode before this, they weren't friends not yet - but Dean sees how Cas sticks by him till the end, and he knows Cas is there for him. In this episode, Sam is shown a future where they lose their loves ones. And then Dean gives up. He gives up after he has to trick Cas into the mal'ak box cause as we all know Cas represents Dena's faith and he loses faith everytime he loses Cas. So now we see what Sam chooses to do. He decides to not stick with the original plan. Sam breaks. The same tactic is used on each brother and each brother responds differently. Dean will always fight for the world, but not himself because of his trauma that causes low self esteem. He fights destiny. Sam in the other hand has always been the one who believes in god, in destiny, he said he used to pray every day as a kid. And now, their roles are reversed. Sam just said he has no hope a few episodes before, but here he is more fixed to see the destiny. His hope is in his family: Dean, Cas, Eileen here
I know you've already said to a few others about episode 7 and 8 that they're there and while episode 7 is. Episode 8 isn't on your page. It goes straight from episode 7 to 9. Sam always stuffs up EVERYTHING! As to Cas & Dean as 'brothers'. Some fans are adamant they can only be'' brothers and will TELL you that repeatedly. They can't accept anything else for their own personal reasons. If it is something more, I believe it borders more to unrequited. Sometimes one part of the equation may have something that they can never let come to the surface. Not necessarily out of shame, but a sense of their identity is fixed and it's too unsettling to rock that personal belief and sense of self. He will always fight that feeling and bury it. Some can bury it quite comfortably and continue as they are.
This is always a hard subject because I adamantly believe people will only see things through their own lens. But also, basic storytelling shows that it is more than brothers. Dean and Cas have been paralleled and compared to pretty much. Every single romantic couple in the show. They go through every single romantic trope. They are and have never been written as platonic, but people will still read it that way. And that's fine but infuriating when you look at it one of them was a woman, people would have read it way back in S4. Also, we know Cas' feelings but I think Dean is more complicated than unrequited. He can be read as bi since like the second episode of season one. But also, we have to look at his character and how much trauma affects him and his decisions. Even in these later seasons when he is much more comfortable being himself, no longer molding his parentification and enmeshment around John, he still has trauma that holds him back. He still has a list of duties. Take care of Sam, make sure Cas is okay. Make sure *insert character* is ok. Cas is his best friend and he loves him, loves spending time with him. But also, Dean never feels worthy and the one time we know he was actually in love with someone and said so was Cassie, and she broke up with him over him telling her the truth. And he didn't take another chance with that, being his true self, with anyone else. He isn't even his true self all the way with Sam because he has to hide things to protect Sam. So he puts on a goofy smile and a hey it will be ok attitude most of the time around him. Dean is very affection when he is allowed, but he hardly allows himself that. Instead he is still driven by obligation. And Cas is feelings. So he pushes those down, Cas is safe, Cas is with him, all good. Nothing more to see here. Cas is also the only person Dean never hides from, shares his true feelings cause Cas loves him unconditionally, doesn't let him hide behind his wall. And John taught Dean that family is the most important thing. And he kept both Sam and Dean isolated from others, kept them dependent on each other. So Cas is family, the highest thing someone can be the Dean, the most important thing to Dean. His only best friend. And Dean won't let him wrap his mind around anything more because why would an angel fall for him? Why would anyone? A soldier angel falls for the righteous man in every conceived way, and the man who never believed in angels and is proven right about them being dicks, prays and has his faith in one said angel. So i think Dean is aware of his feelings for Cas but won't admit it because he doesn't think Cas could or should have those same feeling for him. He doesn't deserve it. If you really dissect 18, you can see all these emotions kinda go through Dean. But that's my opinion of course. Everyone has their own reading of the text.

From this episode - what stuck out.. all the other vamps got cool - emerge from the gums teeth.. not the boys.. big Plastic fangs.
