Elite, I know that I am late, but, the reason that you couldn't buy another grenade soldier is that you didn't have enough newbies, you need 5 newbies for each one and you had 9, you needed 1 more to be able to merge another grenade soldier.
Also, the shotty, sten, luger, and garand soldiers are used to merge and become upgraded versions.
When you are loading your autosave, you need to make sure you're not standing where anything is trying to load or else it won't load it.
