Mr. Harshavardhan Neotia is one of the youngest business persons to have received the ‘Padma Shri’ from the President of India in the year 1999 for his outstanding initiative in social housing. Since then, he has successfully redefined Bengal's landscape through several iconic and pioneering creations.
The 52-year-old entrepreneur hails from a well-known industrialist family, which has been an integral part of the business scene in Kolkata. Hailing from Rajasthan, his forefathers settled in the City of Joy over 100 years ago to avail the opportunities for enterprise that the city offered. Since then, Kolkata has been their home and subsequent generations have been born and brought up here.
Coming from an enterprising family, Mr. Neotia gradually infused life into the architectural scene of West Bengal given his penchant for aesthetics and design. However, with time, he went on to take bold initiatives in other domains such as hospitality, healthcare and education, creating some premium projects. Today, he heads the Ambuja Neotia Group, a prominent corporate house headquartered in Kolkata.
Establishing new benchmarks in public-private partnership, Harshavardhan Neotia set up one of the first joint sector companies, 'Bengal Ambuja Housing Development Ltd.' in partnership with the Government of West Bengal. His maiden project, Udayan - The Condoville, was declared a Model Housing Project by the Union Government. This unique effort earned him the 'Padma Shri' in 1999.
He soon followed up the success of Udayan with many other housing projects, - Ulhas in Burdwan, Urvashi in Durgapur, Utsa in Kolkata, Uttorayon in Siliguri and so forth. Apart from housing, Mr. Neotia also gave Kolkata its first open-spaced mall, City Centre Salt Lake, which witnessed a lot of appreciation and accolades. The legacy created by City Centre Salt Lake was recreated once again at City Centre New Town and City Centre Siliguri. Mr. Neotia is also behind other landmark projects like Swabhumi - The Heritage Plaza, The Ffort Raichak, Kolkata's first luxury weekend getaway, Ganga Kutir, the pastoral hamlet by the Ganges, Neotia Getwel Healthcare Centre, a multi-specialty hospital in Siliguri, among many others.
In addition to his thriving entrepreneurial venture, Mr. Neotia has also been keenly involved in the promotion of arts, both performing and visual. He has been associated with a major cultural institute by the name of Jnana Pravaha at Varanasi which houses timeless art collection of Indian antiquity and priceless books on art and literature. He is a trustee of this institute, which is engaged in the field of preservation and dissemination of Indian heritage and culture.
