  • When I first moved into this house, I found these odd covers in my basement, which turned out to be sump pumps designed to pump water out of the basement during periods of rain/high water tables.
But do they even work? Here's how to find out -- and what to do if they don't. _

Check valve on output side should be changed every 5 years max. $7. The valves fail and plug the outflow. Pump runs continuously, then fails or thermal faults. Basement floods. Not a plumber. Just a battle scarred homeowner

That is an excellent thing to know, homes really ought to come with a manual lol. I'm pinning this.

Thanks, never seen one of these before. My basement is finished and is only partway below grade.

Please would help me to understand, It’s ok that it’s making a lot of noise. It’s not water in . It’s connected to the electric wall. Do I call a plumber. It’s been hours. Thank you, great video.

If I understand correctly, there's no water in there, but the pump is making noise? It sounds like the pump may be stuck on. Unplug the sump from the outlet, then try pressing the float down - looks like a little ball attached to a rod. You can see it at 02:08. Once it's all the way down, plug it back in and see if the problem went away. I should also add that if it got stuck, it may happen again, in which case you can attempt to clean it, or yes, call a plumber.

@@Bootstrappin This is exactly what has been going on with mine for ages... So much so that the battery backup has been draining far sooner than it needs to. Mine is sealed shut and I'm going to have to unseal, un stick, and clean the float switch. I'm hoping it's not too gross in there... Guess I'll be holding my breath!

I can see how this thing could lead to many hours of fun, especially when it fails unannounced.
