Well, I have to give you a very long answer for this, so there won't be any misunderstandings. But I'm still gonna try to make it quick. I'll start by saying this: yes, "Eli" is her official name in *English* (did I mention that English is not my native?), and I have absolutely no problem when people use the official spelling. But I choose not to use it, and here are my reasons (in short): 1. She has a *proper Japanese name* that is written in Kanji, which is used for proper Japanese words. There is no 'L' in Japanese, and also the Kanji in her name, 絵里, is a *common* Japanese name that is written and pronounced as Eri (you can google it). Also, when I watch the anime or play the games - I clearly hear them saying Eri. 2. My native language is Hebrew, not English. In Hebrew the name "Eli" and the word itself means and represents lots of stuff that has nothing to do with this beautiful character and I prefer not to ruin her with it. You don't have to find my reasons valid. You don't have to change the way you call her. The only thing I ask is not to be bothered with it. Like I don't go and tell people what to say and how, I expect the same back.
