One s already pronounces itself as 'ㅆ' and 2 ss just confound the westerners / non-Korean speakers since 2 consonants put together rendering harder(?) sound 'ONLY' applies in Korean grammar - same with 2 gg & bb in which case it's even more confounding because the sound ㄲ, ㅃ don't even exist in other languages (well, at least not in English). The English equivalent for Koreans would be the letter 'f' & 'v' but no one would try to play around with the consonants ㅍ & ㅂ to give them the phonetic equivalent of f & v?
Eliminated is translated from word "탈락" means "out" from game who haven't close to any meaning about death or killed, so that's why none of this people get suspicious about their life will taken away when read the contract.
Also the first game was translated as "red light, green light' but the literal translation would be "The flower has blossomed." Players can only move while the phrase is being spoken. At the end of the phrase, the catcher would turn back to see if anyone is moving.
I've been watching kdramas since around 2006. They set up the game on another level especially during the last decade. Every different genre has the spice. Hope u guys could check more kdramas 💜 imma watch this squid game again with u guys
Every game shown in this show is real thing that exists. The introduction and growing popularity of video games have forced most of those 'old-fashioned games' out of popularity, but they certainly existed and was popular among kids in the past. Also, the reason nobody freaks out after discovering a gun(actually a lighter) inside the box is because firearms are not available for purchase among general public. (Kinda weird for a country where roughly half the total populations are trained to operate/field-strip assault rifles... Hell, some of them even know how to operate a tank!)
sangwoo did go to seoul national university. its one of the top 3 universities in korea, so its a rlly big deal if u studied there. so when the main character finds out hes in debt, sangwoo was just rlly embarassed
Its a big deal in Asia too if youre a graduate from a top university in Korea, Japan, or China. So Sangwoo being a graduate of Seoul National University is amazing for Gihoon. Being Korean-Filipino, a lot of amazing professors in the Philippines that I have had were graduates of SNU and KU.
I know this was so long ago but the reason most people don't stop things in public is called the bystander effect. Individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim in the presence of other people. People think "well there's so many of us I would help but someone else probably will." Most of the time it only takes one to do something before others join in.

Korean and Asian cinema in general needs more love. The film making is always phenomenal and they push boundaries without it coming across as exploitative. They also respect the viewers intelligence so you can have complex well written plots. And then hollywood makes an inferior remake completely missing the point of the movie/show.

This is an absolute masterpiece. A bit too gory so I had to cover my eyes a lot but the concept, cinematography and the acting is stellar. Korean stuff has been packing absolute heat the last few years....I highly recommend you check out other Korean gems like Kingdom, Sweet Home, Signal and Bad Guys. Great stuff!

Park chan wooks vengeance trilogy is a masterpiece, ichi the killer is good if you have a strong stomach, hard boiled and a better tomorrow if you want to see what inspired the gun play from the matrix and equilibrium. Kingdom for an amazing zombie show. Audition for a wtf experience. Zatoitchi or babycart/wolf and cub if you want some old school samurai action Theres a ton more. Anything by park chan wook, takeshi kitano and takeshi miike
Since you said you like romance, I strongly recommend another k-drama called Goblin (aka Guardian: The Lonely and Great God) starring Gong Yoo, the slapping recruiter from the subway (& also the main dad from Train to Busan)! SO good! It is a mixed genre show, mostly fantasy with also rom com, drama, action, etc. with incredible characters, acting, cinematography, & music!
never heard of squid game, but ddakjji is a real game. everyone in korea knows and played it at some point because you can play it with some paper you can fold into the squares. for money, you just get rid of three digits and you get an approximate amount in dollars. for example, a million won is a thousand dollars, and 5000 won would be 5 dollars-ish

As a Korean, I can confirm you that all the games (Squid game, Ddagji, red light/green light) are real, I used to play them when I was a kid.
