    So she gets turned loose into the hive for the other 6 days of the week? Or u just pull the masonite framed excluders and have that frame marked?

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Either way would work. We leave her on that frame until we come back four days later and then pull the excluders. At that time the grafting frame will have plenty of larvae of the proper age. We know which ones to use because the larvae less than 12 hours old won't have much royal jelly.

    We were in your shop a few weeks ago and I also bought one. I rarely graft over 30-40 in one sitting, but it would definitely save hunting and pecking for the small ones. I can drop a drawn comb in the brood nest, but this is better, especially if we decide to expand. Thanks for sharing as always! :D

    Hey Bob, if you cut your walls that extra 3/8" or whatever height distance you like between the bottom bars and the hive floor, and cut you entrance into one end wall, you can nail / glue your hive floor right on to the bottom of the box and eliminate making up that bottom board that your gonna end up nailing on to the bottom anyway. I went to 8 frame boxes a few years back and build most all of my own equipment. There are very few hives left here now where the bottom box and the bottom board are two separate pieces. I got tired of picking up that bottom box to move it somewhere and the bottom board come off and bust my toes.....or worse trip me. Glad to see that shingle thing is leaving you alone now....bless you.

By the time i transfered 75 nucs into transport boxes and marked each queen had bee frenzy going on. Must of triggered swarming with all the bees in the air .. Had her go and about half of cell starter next to her swarm off .. Good news friend wants me to manage her hives so she stops losing them every fall. So i can still graft off her. Hey Bob, do you know of any beekeepers in the Glendale Oregon area? North of GP or south of Roseburg?
    I am driving semi for A&M out of Glendale and don't have a place or time for my own hives, but I am itching to get my hands on some bees since I have the time to watch you and Ian, and I want to be able to lock in some of what I am learning.
    I had a few hives in the Bay Area years ago, self taught from The Hive and the Honey Bee mostly lol, but I am just learning so much from you guys that I want to be able to at least occasionally be able to handle bees again, so that when I decide to get off the road, I will be ready to dive in.
    If you still know anyone out here, a reference would be great, and the closer it is to the Yard the better!
    I am happy to be useful in exchange for access, and I might even take some of my never used time off if I have something interesting to do!
    I actually asked the owner if I could put a couple of hives at the yard, but he wasn't excited by the idea... lol
    I have been keeping my eyes open and haven't spotted any hives the area yet.
    My ideal would be to find someone who has some hives in the garden that they just don't work with anymore, that's how I got started long ago, but I haven't gotten lucky yet!

    Somewhat unrelated. What would be your approach if found a hive during the flow where something had happened to the queen a week prior and the workers plugged the brood box with honey.
    I replaced with a mated queen.
    Will they move the honey up to the super? Or would you remove those brood frames and replace them with foundation? I don’t have any drawn brood frames.

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would just let them work through it out as the new queen begins to expand the brood nest, as long as you have empty space above so they don't continue to plug out.

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BohemiaBees Interesting thought. You may have problems unless they are separated by more than an excluder. When I occasionally end up with a two queen hive it seems like I have better luck maintaining the two separate brood nests if they are apart. First an excluder above the bottom, then a super or two and then another excluder and the other brood nest on top with another entrance. When they are stacked one on top of the other with only one excluder between it seems like one queen disappears more often. I have to admit though, I have not run a lot of two queen systems and my observations are just casual.

    @patrickwalther1074 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    great, like always! :-)
    Bob, do you have any informations on restricting the egg laying capacity of the breeding queen? lets say from this 1300-1500 a day down to maybe 300-400 over the grafting period, guess that could change the larva quality...
    (I`m grafting alot this year..., and maybe sometimes I start to see little ghosts running inside those cells...) :-)

    • @bobbinnie9872
      @bobbinnie9872  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brother Adam talks about this in his book "Beekeeping at Buckfast Abbey". He was convinced that restricting egg laying resulted in higher quality eggs and increased the life of the queen. We try to keep our breeder queen colonies down to a size that will maintain about three or four frames of brood.

    • @patrickwalther1074
      @patrickwalther1074 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have it from Brother Adam too.
      Think your way of keeping her on 3-4 frames is a good way! many thanx

    Titebond 3 is marketed as being waterproof, whereas Titebond 2 is marketed as water resistant, so I would have thought Titebond 3 would be better for humid locations like bottom boards. Does your experience with titebond contradict that?
