In Vivaldi's The four seasons in one of the solos there is a violin soloing and then another violin doing the same solo only one fret up. That is stuff like necrovore does. And it's more than reasonably easy to notate. By using what's called accidentals. But there is nothing in music theory that technically breaks any rules because there are none. A lot of times you can come up with the greatest stuff by notating before even playing something.
Nah. I like some of Death's stuff but Chuck's songwriting skills was pretty bad, especially on the later stuff. Technical bells and whistles with little of substance.

It’s not really a surprise it sounds more cobbled together considering those factors, and Symbolic sounds a lot more natural even though it’s not my favorite Death album

This guy is either just very musically immature or just hasn’t gotten out much in the music world, which is odd because Blood Incantation is a pretty underground band to mainstream listeners. Bands with exercises as riffs: Periphery, Racer X, Paganinis 5th Capris, etc. I’m starting to realize that an exercise isn’t even supposed to be as simple as the first riff that BI plays on Starspawn. An exercise can be the riffs on Dust In The Wind by Kansas or the Creeping Death Riff by Metallica, to Demiruge by Meshuggah, to Bleed by Meshuggah. Exercises can be riffs whether you like it or not. @@noz_redna the 1992-1994 compilation. unfortunately they were very short lived as a band and released only two demos comprised of a total of six songs which can all be found in the compilation that lasts under an hour long. i highly recommend though since they are very atmospheric and having songwriting skills good enough to be technical without being too over the top
If a band’s riffs are completely interchangeable, ie; riffs from Song A could be used in Song B with no real difference to the tone or structure then there is something wrong. Could you imagine the ghostly breakdown in Chapel of Ghouls being used in Lord of all Fevers and Plagues? Parts should be utterly integral to each piece of music, it’s what makes a song truly cohesive and not just a random collection of disparate ideas.

I love metal because of how goofy and strange it is, most metal sucks but I have to say I love Blood Incantation, the riffs sound good, the art is good, looking forward to getting their new single very much.

I watched some interviews after watching this video and they are doing really well as a band, their prog synth record sold more copies than their last metal record, creativity is in full health here.

I think that there are two types of listeners - musicians and non-musicians. And they hear and see things differently. I'm kind of in between, but I like simplicity if I feel it and it sounds good. It doesn't matter to me the technicality. When I hear this band, I just hear early 90's death and grind. There were so many bands like this back then.
And then theres people that absolutely need attention to the point of contradicting popular belief for views. Throwing shade or not, as long as the video gets attention and gets you to click on the video, people like this will continue making content. Also Blood Incantation is rad as fuck and its all subjective what SOUNDS feel good in your ears. I just so happen to like good music

I saw these dudes live and it was incredible. There was no rock-stardom bs that we see in a lot of up & coming bands that get some traction; they're just some very lovely, nerdy metal heads. They play as it's just second nature. Even the solos don't feel self-indulgent. As a whole I would compare; not their sound but more of a general aesthetic of the band and their lyrics to a band like Mastadon for the way each song is like a journey for lack of a better word. They're fun live, they have no intention of being "cool" - they bring a wholesome & considerate crowd together as a heavy metal celebration of sci-fi, metal nerds alike. Also to then come out with 'Timewave Zero' proving they truly do not care about popularity or being impressive as it's a fairly straight forward instrumental album you can sleep or study to. THEN to just drop 'Luminescent Bridge' which is a whole step into an even more exciting direction... Fair enough if you're not a fan but these dude are just having fun, making fun music that feels like it connects with outcasts like me who don't quite fit the "cool guy bro metal" that seems so popular these days.

Blood Incantation is a great band, and the other projects they are involved in like Black Curse and Spectral Voice are awesome too. Main issue with this video is the clickbait approach to it. Dude all opinions are respected but just drop the clickbait. A friends band once played with them and they unsolicitedly told this friend that they more or less were posers because they didn’t LOOK metal. Maybe the band is autistic idk. First release of theirs was sick. Second didn’t hit as hard, still had cool parts. Anyone who disses Chuck like that is definitely reaching which kinda gives you an idea of what they must be like. “Different”. Elitists that don’t think they’re elitists, lol.
There’s other bands that do that and do it better than Blood Incantation. The same year BI released that shitty alien album, Nocturnus A.D. released its worthy follow up to The Key.
I recently discovered that Blood Incantation put a quote from The Kybalion on their merch. I don't hate this band's music at all but that's just corny as hell.
I think this is a really good critique, but my simple unga-bunga brain makes me really enjoy these guys, at least for now. Also, huge props to you for mentioning Timeghoul. Their music slaps me right into the crypt and I love it.
Part of what you said I agree with, part not, but man, the album cover thing really sucks imo... Bruce Pennington is an amazing artist & paying for a license is probably cheaper than having someone make some original work... idk... Most of the "retro" metal bands are kind of lame because they're just a hodgepodge of their influences - they don't have a cohesive & unique style. It's really hard to find your voice - but if you play the nostalgia card you'll get more listeners & stuff...idk. On the positive - I really enjoyed this 2023 record: Haxprocess - The Caverns of Duat. They're younger guys & play very well, also their cover art was originally made for them afaik :D check em out ;) (fun fact - the album was produced & recorded in the same studio that Blood Incantation went to, which I think makes awesome sounding records production wise)

Respect for re-uploading these. Your videos presented some criticisms of Metal songwriting and conventions which caused me to rethink my own songwriting and grow as a musician. I'm more attentive to melodic development and streamlining how the different parts of a song fit together now. Many people aren't ready to hear what you have to say (and some of it does come across as a little critical/contrary for the sake of it), but there's some genuine gold here if people are willing to put their initial annoyance aside and listen. The result of this was a marked improvement in my own compositional practices, and a greater appreciation for well-written compositions across a range of genres. You seem quite passionate about this, and you're assuming I am a 'blind follower' who can't think for himself. I will not take offence at this, because frankly you have never met me and are speaking from a place of ignorance. I felt this way with the last Morbid Angel album. The songs did not have a real identity, they were just a bunch of riffs put together. Blood Incantation reminds me a lot of Incantation.

this is untrue and is explicitly explained in the video, the band did not plagiarize any of their album covers, it is taken from previously existing art by the artist Bruce Pennington that they probably paid rights to have as their album cover, this is a very normal thing within the world of metal, look at bands like bolt thrower or reverend bizarre which have done the same thing. a very large amount of metal album covers are not original pieces of art designed for that band. the youtuber is probably just a moron a not troll and just dislikes modern popular bands and tries to justify in some of the dumbest way possible

This is a fantastic critique of this band. I have listened to these guys and have def given them a chance,but it always leaves me cold on how there is no emotional connection,the lack of establishing any kind of mood to grasp on to.!

I personally find Spectral Voice to be a much better project than Blood Incantation, but the idea they're trying to create an "illusion" of technicality and riffage is pretty silly. Your support for the opinion that "Blood Incantation sucks" boils down to "scales and exercises are not riffs", which is incorrect - ostinatos in classical music, motifs, and leitmotifs in opera and music theater, "forms" in jazz, they all serve the same function as "riffs" in metal, the driving blocks of a section, which constitutes songs. If a certain group of notes serves this function, it's a riff - whether it follows a certain scale or not, is completely irrelevant. The idea that there is an objective, absolute standard to evaluate and criticize art had already been obsolete by the late 19th century (see Whistler vs. Ruskin), and certainly should not be dictating the value of art today. I'm afraid you are not as knowledgeable as you may think to offer "criticisms" like this. And you most likely have not worked or at least jammed with musicians of various ilks, or at least communicated with people who work in music industries enough. I never got the hype, and I agree about the songwriting. I think maybe you're supposed to enjoy it like experimental ambient music or an abstract painting. There are plenty of heavy bands that are progressive/avant-garde but can create awesome songs... Ulcerate, Gorguts, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord etc... but I never come away from a Blood Incantation song feeling like I went on a cohesive journey or narrative, thinking a riff was good, or at the very least remembering a song or even wanting to hear it again.

Something inside me wants to applaud this video, because indeed the circlejerk of modern metal got boring over the last few years with hyping up certain bands. And I think some of the critique is valid or interesting at least. Still, there is a certain kind of drive and power in Blood Incantations music that makes them unique to me. The problem of riff salad is a real problem, it's just that I don't hear that with them that much. What I like about them is their sonic approach which is quite psychedelic and their ability to groove. Doesn't mean they're the best band out there, but to me they're mostly just a fun band.

@@noz_redna the 1992-1994 compilation. unfortunately they were very short lived as a band and released only two demos comprised of a total of six songs which can all be found in the compilation that lasts under an hour long. i highly recommend though since they are very atmospheric and having songwriting skills good enough to be technical without being too over the top
If a band’s riffs are completely interchangeable, ie; riffs from Song A could be used in Song B with no real difference to the tone or structure then there is something wrong.

I think that there are two types of listeners - musicians and non-musicians. And they hear and see things differently. I'm kind of in between, but I like simplicity if I feel it and it sounds good. It doesn't matter to me the technicality. When I hear this band, I just hear early 90's death and grind. There were so many bands like this back then.
And then theres people that absolutely need attention to the point of contradicting popular belief for views. Throwing shade or not, as long as the video gets attention and gets you to click on the video, people like this will continue making content. Also Blood Incantation is rad as fuck and its all subjective what SOUNDS feel good in your ears. I just so happen to like good music

I saw these dudes live and it was incredible. There was no rock-stardom bs that we see in a lot of up & coming bands that get some traction; they're just some very lovely, nerdy metal heads. They play as it's just second nature. Even the solos don't feel self-indulgent. As a whole I would compare; not their sound but more of a general aesthetic of the band and their lyrics to a band like Mastadon for the way each song is like a journey for lack of a better word. They're fun live, they have no intention of being "cool" - they bring a wholesome & considerate crowd together as a heavy metal celebration of sci-fi, metal nerds alike. Also to then come out with 'Timewave Zero' proving they truly do not care about popularity or being impressive as it's a fairly straight forward instrumental album you can sleep or study to. THEN to just drop 'Luminescent Bridge' which is a whole step into an even more exciting direction... Fair enough if you're not a fan but these dude are just having fun, making fun music that feels like it connects with outcasts like me who don't quite fit the "cool guy bro metal" that seems so popular these days.

Blood Incantation is a great band, and the other projects they are involved in like Black Curse and Spectral Voice are awesome too. Most of the "retro" metal bands are kind of lame because they're just a hodgepodge of their influences - they don't have a cohesive & unique style. It's really hard to find your voice - but if you play the nostalgia card you'll get more listeners & stuff...idk.
On the positive - I really enjoyed this 2023 record: Haxprocess - The Caverns of Duat. They're younger guys & play very well, also their cover art was originally made for them afaik :D check em out ;) (fun fact - the album was produced & recorded in the same studio that Blood Incantation went to, which I think makes awesome sounding records production wise)

Respect for re-uploading these. Your videos presented some criticisms of Metal songwriting and conventions which caused me to rethink my own songwriting and grow as a musician. I'm more attentive to melodic development and streamlining how the different parts of a song fit together now. Many people aren't ready to hear what you have to say (and some of it does come across as a little critical/contrary for the sake of it), but there's some genuine gold here if people are willing to put their initial annoyance aside and listen. Harnessing Ruin is really bad honestly. A few good riffs but other than that there’s almost nothing worthwhile about it. Even Ross Dolan doesn’t sound good on it.
I felt this way with the last Morbid Angel album. The songs did not have a real identity, they were just a bunch of riffs put together. Blood Incantation reminds me a lot of Incantation.

this is untrue and is explicitly explained in the video, the band did not plagiarize any of their album covers, it is taken from previously existing art by the artist Bruce Pennington that they probably paid rights to have as their album cover, this is a very normal thing within the world of metal, look at bands like bolt thrower or reverend bizarre which have done the same thing. a very large amount of metal album covers are not original pieces of art designed for that band. the youtuber is probably just a moron a not troll and just dislikes modern popular bands and tries to justify in some of the dumbest way possible

I personally find Spectral Voice to be a much better project than Blood Incantation, but the idea they're trying to create an "illusion" of technicality and riffage is pretty silly. It's perfectly fine to say "I don't like Blood Incantation" or "I don't like Polyphia", but it's a completely different story to say "Blood Incantation sucks".
Your support for the opinion that "Blood Incantation sucks" boils down to "scales and exercises are not riffs", which is incorrect - ostinatos in classical music, motifs, and leitmotifs in opera and music theater, "forms" in jazz, they all serve the same function as "riffs" in metal, the driving blocks of a section, which constitutes songs. If a certain group of notes serves this function, it's a riff - whether it follows a certain scale or not, is completely irrelevant. The idea that there is an objective, absolute standard to evaluate and criticize art had already been obsolete by the late 19th century (see Whistler vs. Ruskin), and certainly should not be dictating the value of art today.
I'm afraid you are not as knowledgeable as you may think to offer "criticisms" like this. I never got the hype, and I agree about the songwriting. I think maybe you're supposed to enjoy it like experimental ambient music or an abstract painting.
There are plenty of heavy bands that are progressive/avant-garde but can create awesome songs... Ulcerate, Gorguts, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord etc... but I never come away from a Blood Incantation song feeling like I went on a cohesive journey or narrative, thinking a riff was good, or at the very least remembering a song or even wanting to hear it again.

Something inside me wants to applaud this video, because indeed the circlejerk of modern metal got boring over the last few years with hyping up certain bands. And I think some of the critique is valid or interesting at least. Still, there is a certain kind of drive and power in Blood Incantations music that makes them unique to me. The problem of riff salad is a real problem, it's just that I don't hear that with them that much. What I like about them is their sonic approach which is quite psychedelic and their ability to groove. Doesn't mean they're the best band out there, but to me they're mostly just a fun band.
