    absoloutely love it. the Alpha is one of those synths that sounds great without any FX (a test of a truly good synth) but when you add one of the best FX units ever made, it becomes mindblowing you know.

    The Eventide unit almost gives the Juno 2 a bi-timbral functionality.
    Currently, I have eight synths in various states of repair. One Alesis, one Moog, two Korg (including an Odyssey emulator), two Roland, one Oberheim and one Yamaha. Aside from not being confident that I can afford to get them all up to snuff, I can only dream of having a place to set all of them up so I can play them. If I did, I would entertain the illusion of being able to turn my own channel into one similar to yours. You always seem to be having so much fun.

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly! Some sounds just needs a little fairy dust to elevate them into infinity... The Eventide is just such a box :)

    • @Roboprogs
      @Roboprogs 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep!
      Back in the day (late 80s), the only synth I could afford was a little Yamaha DX100. REALLY cheesy sounding. But about 6 months later I picked up a little (Alesis?) reverb box for it. OMG, what a difference that made. Totally usable with that addition.

  • @TheGhostMall
    @TheGhostMall 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Espen, thanks SO much for this demo, it sounds beautiful! As you know, I do almost all my 80s retro producing in the box, and one of my favorite effects plugins is Soundtoys' Microshift. It does a really nice job of capturing the classic doubling/pitch-shifting functions of the H3000 and similar units. That said, it's a brilliant plug I often use, but it is a one-trick pony compared the the breadth and depth of this hardware unit (which can perform many more functions). I had no idea you had one of these! As for the Alpha Juno 2, I've definitely seen that in your videos before and...even a VST adherent like me wouldn't mind that hardware! :-) Cheers, my friend!

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah, yes. Soundtoys. Some of the original creators of the Eventide H3000 went on to found Soundtoys so no wonder they have great plugins!
      The Eventide H3000 plugin is awesome as well and sound pretty much the same, but can't quite match the full sound for obvious reasons, but sadly it lacks some of the most famous presets of the hardware unit. I too use the micro-shift algorithms for my vocals when I mix, but there's so much more you can do with it as well.
      The Juno is so lush and beautiful for my soft-sounding synth-pop, it's always on my tracks more or less. Thanks and Cheers my friend! :)

  • @XavierRadix
    @XavierRadix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    These two units sound absolutely fantastic...
    I've always wanted a H3000, and maybe I should get the plugin version or something..
    With those pitched delays, and all the other crazy stuff you can do with it, it's a real powerful piece of kit!
    BTW, I see some other stuff in your rack that I've always wanted.. Lexicon PCM, Roland MKS-20... Wonderful.

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Eventide H3000 plugin is awesome as well and sound pretty much the same, but can't quite match the full sound for obvious reasons, but sadly it lacks some of the most famous presets of the hardware unit.
      I pretty much use the Eventide (hardware or plugin) on absolutely every track I make and always on my vocal tracks.
      The MKS-20 is a beautiful machine for sure and only the Keyscape from Spectrasonics can do it justice in plugin form, but I still prefer the hardware with its analog chorus board that takes up almost the entire box.
      A Lexicon PCM is mandatory in my studio, so 80s and lush and it simply BECOME the sound, it doesn't wrap around it alike all inferior reverbs does.

    Fantastic video. The Juno 2 is underrated! I always love going back to sounds I considered "bad" and running them through FX. A lot of those "cheesy" FM sounds for example run through crystallizers (some reverb) and backmasking can turn them into dreams.

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yes, making videos of synths bone dry has never interested me, neither to watch or hear. Ideally I like to hear the synths in a musical context thus my videos very often has a song made up of different synth sounds from the synth itself I'm testing. This is because I actually make music and not lab experiments.. ;-)

    • @McN4styFilth
      @McN4styFilth 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EspenKraft Exactly! To me a great reverb, chorus, flanger, delay, what have you is just as important as a solid synthesizer. Curious when/if you're making new patches for any of your synths do you make them dry or are they wet?

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of my synths do not have any internal effects as very few of the 80s synth does have that, the exception being the D-50 and others coming after that like the M1 etc.
      I make all my patches with a reverb or delay going on during the making process. Basically because when I make a patch the patch is needed for one of my songs and to better hear how it's going to sound in the song I need to blend it in. I have a bank of patches for the Roland D-50 I sell online and I have every sound with and without the internal effects so one can use own effects instead of the D-50s internal ones.

    • @McN4styFilth
      @McN4styFilth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EspenKraft Very interesting to hear your perspective on the sound design process. The only old synthesizer I've kept around is the TX81Z and I've kept my XV-5080 rompler. Don't have the heart to let go of them. Currently filling the DX7 void with a MODX. The FM-X engine is surprisingly good and can reproduce the more vintage FM sounds relatively well although not perfectly. Anyways, gonna check out your D-50 videos. I always wanted to own one and program on it!

    • @sullivanradley
      @sullivanradley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't do covers either. I feel that the muscle memory from playing the notes and chords would subconsciously creep into my work and make it less original. • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure Ales, it has its own controller the PG300. Works the same way as the other. Personally I would never pay much for such a controller. I grew up with membrane synths and I work fast with these anyways as I know what I need to change to make the sounds I want. To just turn knobs randomly, as I see so many do, has never been my style. I preferred to learn what synthesis meant a long time ago so these overpriced controllers can just stay that way. Overpriced :P

      Espen Kraft Thanks for the reply. Makes sense.
      I personally find the controls mean I can time sweeps, pulse rates, LFOs etc etc on the fly, so really like that hands on thing. And also adds some serendipity, but see the value in setting a sound and committing to it. And the value of money saved from not needing the controller!

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, if you demand real-time control over such things I understand. I've never been interested in these things as I mainly consider myself a composer and a studio animal these days and sweeping the filter during a track is something I almost never do :)

    This sounds great though I’m curious why the title says “vs” because they are not compared to each other (as two similar instruments would be), but they are played in tandem with each other. It’s almost like it would be more accurate to swap out the “vs” in the title, and replace it with a “+” or something.

    Aahh, great sounds coming from your studio once again! :-) The combination of the alpha Juno and the eventide makes great, warm sounds! I have a Juno 106 with all 6 voice chips still being intact (late serial number), but having compared it to the boutique version, JU-06, the envelopes behaves differently, and I think it needs to be recalibrated. How would you compare the alpha Juno's to the 106, they are somewhat similar, right? Thanks again for sharing your synth experiences, it's always a pleasure to watch and LISTEN :-)

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Juno 106 and Juno 2 is both alike and very different, mainly to the far more advanced oscillator chip in the Alpha. Unfortunately the Alphas filter cannot self oscillate so that takes out some of the edge to it, but for me personally I prefer the Alpha because it's so lush and I mostly don't go for spikey sounds anyways :)
      I compared the Boutique JU-06 to my Juno 6 which I think is more relevant to compare it too and I liked it, but the envelops was different as you say and played alone it felt stale. In a mix I used it with great success, but ultimately sold it as I didn't connect with it the right way.

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Joakim! I havn't used the H9 myself as I always use the Strymons BigSky or BlueSky for live gigs, been while admittedly, so I can't give you my personal experience on that, but as always I think the old stuff has a certain sound that newer boxes can't match. Not necessarily better, but different, so it comes down to preference I guess.
      Comparing the H3000 to the Eventide H3000 plugin, it's ALMOST the same, but the sound coming out of the hardware seems to me more vast and expanding than you get out of the plugin.

    • @No_Nag
      @No_Nag 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do have some old lexicon gear, and other digital/analog so I can relate. But it just that the Eventides are still pricy! And I can understand why . I just haven't laid my hands on an old (!) unit yet. And I know what you meen. Got Ensoniq DP/4 and DP4+ and what they do. But hopefully the the H9 is close enough, because it sounds fenomenal! And so does your demo!

      Another piece of gear that\s gone under the radar on most is the Yamaha A3000 sampler. This is every bit as good as the DP/4 in terms of sound. Just skip it as a sampler (although it's excellent as sampler) and just run it as a effect box. It's possible to hook up as any other effect box in a send/return system. It's so dark and beautiful in its sound!

But i don't know if it's possible to do that kind of routing on it. i have done similar efx routing with S1100 and ESI-32 and they also sound great.
