Thus, one does something well, and something is good. As in French, the distinction becomes blurred with the so-called linking verbs, which use the adjective although they follow or attach to a verb (senses and verbs that connect to descriptors-look, smell, taste, feel, sound, along with get, become, and so on. Examples: The flower smells good, the cake tastes good...as opposed to having the capability of "doing"--my nose smells well.) I say this not to be corrective nor critical, but it helps me in my understanding of mieux and meilleur to make connections. So, maybe it will help others. This, of course, has no relation to gender and number distinctions, which English (as far as I know) doesn't have in respect to adjectives and adverbs. Also, idiomatic phrases follow their own non-rules. Last, and likewise, bad also has two uses (in standard use) in English-bad and badly. He is a bad boy. He behaves badly.
