    Firstly, a big round of applause to Claire, for doing such a great job acclimating and looking after those plants 👏👏 And Emma, you are going to love that domesticum when the leaves get large, as, in my opininion, it has the best variegation on a yellow variegated plant. what a fab collection, and your reaction to the clemensiorum was priceless. I think you should do an import "looking after" for Claire, that would be great to see. Enjoy your new plant babies ☺

    Your plant #2 is a schismatoglottis I think, schismatoglottis and homalomena are both aroids (as you know) but they're from different lineages (not closely related in their aroideae subfamily) that happens to be occupying the same habitats (Sympatric speciation?). So they ended up looking very similar by convergent evolution, both usually having multiple rows of parallel venation running from the midrib to the edges. So it can sometimes be hard to identify when they're collected from the wild since they both grow literally next to one another. Though I think their stems look completely different though, plus I find homalomena leaves to be a more cordate shape whilst schismat. leaves are more enlongated.

    This is a fantastic tip to add to the tips for people doing imports: get a buddy! You never know. This exact same thing happened to me with my first big hoya import from Thailand. It takes months for the order to ship and the suddenly it does. I was going out of town for a few days and in complete panic they would arrive while I was gone. I lined up a plant friend to come get the box and do exactly what Claire did for you. Turned out they arrived a day before I left. But I felt better having my "import buddy" just in case!

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Emma. When I saw the little single flowers of the Hoya retusa I remember where I had recently seen it. I was watching Ric’s Hoyas in Florida and I’m sure it was in this garden tour and he mentioned that it constantly bloomed. See if you can find the video, you’ll love the plant even more.

    Check out Alocasia Scalprum, I think that might be the wrong spelling if you look for info. Had one , not anymore, it did not like shipping and I couldn't save the corm , but they are cool, glad it made it for you both. Nice haul. After watching , my hubby just happened to take me plant shopping, and they had some hoya retusa there so I scooped one up. I didn't know they flowered so differently either and looks so beautiful when it does. Thank you both for sharing.

    • @GoodGrowing

    I’m sure the process differs greatly between US and UK customs, but I think the US only checks the roots. My latest import had all of the root bags slashed open because they were looking for potato cyst nematodes. They could be looking for specific pests that pose a greater agricultural threat to your country.

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  ปีที่แล้ว

      oh how interesting! maybe they're not checking the foliage at all then 🤷‍♀️

    Domesticum are super easy! Just treat it like you would your other philos, it's very similar to burle Marx in a lot of ways. But very low maintenance, allow to dry partially before rewatering, filtered light/partial direct sun it's not that bothered xx

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ooh thanks for the advice!

  • @cherie7100
    @cherie7100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For the bags I would suggest ziploc bags. They come in larger sizes and no need for the taping to the pot as you can put them in and zip up the bag, then open to air every few days. I'm surprised they don't ship them a little better to avoid them being flattened so much, like in a roll of cardboard. The Philodendron Martianum is a gorgeous plant!

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe they ship them like that so they can fit as many plants as possible into as small of a box as possible

    • @GoodGrowing

    I’ve found my domesticum pretty undemanding, in fact it’s pretty drought tolerant.. I have mine on a pole and yes they size up pretty quickly… the variegation is seemingly pretty random so don’t be dismayed if a mostly green one comes out cuz the next one will be 3/4 yellow, next one splashy…
    The scindapsis had customs tape on the paper so they looked but got lucky there

    • @GoodGrowing
      @GoodGrowing  ปีที่แล้ว
