Thanks for your comment. Our goal is simply to document and preserve the history of Birmingham's pubs for future generations. These buildings hold countless stories and memories from different eras of the city's past. We'll continue capturing this important local history through our video series. If you have any specific memories of particular pubs you'd like to share, we'd love to hear them.

due to Birmingham becoming an ayatollah hellhole is reason why the pubs all closed, they don't drink those people do they! also the cost of going to the pub is also to blame the duty and tax on alcohol is way out of hand since mid 90s.

No doubt there will be people whose response is going to be along the lines of, "What do you expect in Birmingistan?" Others might point to the smoking ban. However, I can say that many pubs were on their last legs when I was a youngster, and I am 70 now. Many pubs brought about their own demise by failing to move with the times, but a lot failed as it became better to stay at home. Many people began to realise that it was more pleasant to get in some supermarket beer and to sit in front of the television. Another issue with many pubs was that as the ordinary people stopped going, the clientele became less salubrious. Drugs and violence became commonplace in many pubs. Also, pubs across the city have closed down, many of them in predominantly white areas, so religion is not the cause. The closure is more to do with societal changes than with demographics. In the past, visiting the pub was a ritual that people carried out several times a week. More latterly, people visit pubs as a treat, maybe the monthly gathering of friends. Pubs can not survive on this more restricted trade. Where I live, there used to be 8 pubs within a 20 minute walk. Only 2 remain, and a Wetherspoons has also opened. Of the 6 that closed, 1 had become a centre for drugs and crime, so it was closed by the police, 4 had suffered long slow deaths over decades, and 1 closed so long ago that I do not remember it ever being a pub. As painful as it is to accept, pubs are largely a thing of the past. Along with the average High Street, they have been overtaken by changes in how we live today.

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful and balanced perspective on pub closures in Birmingham. You make excellent points about how this decline spans decades and has complex causes - from changing social habits and home entertainment to economic factors. Your local example of 8 pubs reducing to 2 really illustrates this citywide pattern. We're documenting these pubs precisely because they represent such an important part of Birmingham's social history, even as society evolves. Thank you for adding this valuable context to our documentation work!

This brought back some great memories. I lived in shard end from 1965 until the late 90s. I lived opposite the packhorse when it was built which is know a block of flats. Like a lot of pubs! most of them got rundown, the carpet in the manor house stetchford was so dirt and sticky like the Stockland green was aswell. My wife worked in the hunters moon for 13 years and new all of the regulars. Good old day

Thanks for sharing your memories! The Packhorse and other Shard End pubs hold so much history. It’s amazing your wife worked at the Hunters Moon for 13 years-good times indeed! Check out our videos on Shard End pubs, and let us know if there’s one you’d like to see featured

Pubs are dying all over the Country, it’s down to prices for a pint, due to higher production costs, but also because of the smoking bans, this Government have no clue!!

Recognize so many of those pubs, unfortunately many of those areas are unrecognizable to me now as is England the country I was born and raised in. Thank God I don't live there anymore it is a country completely alien to me now, maybe freedom is still there where it hasn't been stamped out by political correctness. That's the reason they needed to get rid of those old pubs and close them down because they once represented regular men and women, unafraid to have meaningful dialogue and a fucking good laugh. Thanks for the memories.

Thank you for sharing your memories of these Birmingham pubs. You're right that many of these areas have changed dramatically - that's partly why we're documenting these lost venues for historical record. The traditional pub was indeed a unique social space where people from all walks of life would gather, share stories, and enjoy each other's company. It's interesting how you remember them as places for open dialogue and laughter - that social aspect was certainly central to pub culture. These buildings hold so many memories for different people, which is why we're continuing to document them in our series. If you have any specific memories of particular pubs you'd like to share, we'd love to hear them for our future videos.

Don’t people ever reflect on how shit their own existence must be if all they can comment about is ‘Muslims’. Their lives must be incredibly sad, empty and angry.
Surprised there are no pictures of the Swan at Yardley, The Lincoln Poacher or the Dolphin in Acocks Green.
Great to see an old picture of Sam Wellers though. I had many great nights in there.

Well thanks to the anti smoking brigade this is why we have seen the demise of the pub trade its the same with the Working mens clubs who in their right mind would want to go into a pub pay over the odds for a.pint and then have to go outside to have a smoke in all kinds of weather .the pub trade was built on people going into a pub to have a pint after work to relax and sit in the warmth and enjoy the atmosphere that was destroyed by the arseholes who very rarely go into pubs and moaned about those who did and smoke This has happened in ireland too not just here and to those who say this is not the cause of the demise of the pub trade If i wanted to go to a restaurant i would not a fuckin pub😊😊😊

  • @fetlocks3
