Different key and it stretches the song....I have only 1 daughter and have shed a lot of tears over this girl and this song always brings them. She did find true love, a Hungarian man wh I love like one of my sons now. It was a long haul but to any that are going through it I hope yours gets to the place where I now find myself. Thanks for the take!
A bandmate of mine was Phillipe Saisse’s tech on Night Music and he’d get me in all the time. I was there the night you did Another Long One. I remember Hiram Bullock forever walking around the set non-stop doing his falsetto background vox part “Gonna be another long one tonight”… He seemed really keen on your song. I often think of that evening and your arresting and riveting performance.
Shawn Colvin, your music has been the soundtrack for my heart from seeing you in Long Beach (?) CA c. 1978, then with Richard Thompson at Seattle Nights at the Pier (pure magic!) c. 1990, to the UPS Field House in Tacoma WA (“Found a way to rhyme something with ‘salmon’!” 😂😂). Thank youuuuuuuuu! 🫡❤️
I loved at 2:30 in the video where you can see, what I think is Shawn's daughter, dancing on the stairs over Shawn's right shoulder... so appropriate...
My wife and I have seen Shawn 3 times. Once with a band and twice solo. The Subdudes was a perfect fit on the album recording of this song. This song and Someday and, Your Gonna Make Me lonesome When You Go I can listen over n over.....thanks Shawn.
OMG I fell in love with the album version which included the awesome backing vocals, but she can so carry it on her own with nothing but a guitar and her voice! My dream is to hear her in person in concert some day!
So happy to hear you dig this one up. One of my favorite cuts from one of my favorite records. I was just watching Waddy Wachtel tell the story of how this song made it (late) onto Excitable Boy. Love Warren's version, but to me, yours has always been the definitive rendition of this great song. Appreciate you.
Hey Shawn, been catching up with your at home videos etc. the past few weeks. I met you at the famous Steady On private CBS Records office (in Forest Hills, Queens, a location we'd no idea of until we were invited there, must have been top secret) "showcase" (whatever that is!) performance, back in college days, I was tickled as hell to meet you in person then, and I still have my signed CD as well! I'm a massive Zevon fan, that's putting it mildly. It might be a cliche by now, but what some of these songwriters can do with three chords (as a basis), it's amazing. It's magic that Zevon could come up with such a masterpiece with such a basic chord progression. Of course, your arrangement and playing is on a whole other level anyway.
Wow Shawn, I really like the idea you might actually read my little 2 cents here..!! I just listened to " I don't know why" again here as I sit in a room in Sanur, Bali. On the beach... How lucky am I ?? There may not be a sexier place to hear an angelic gem of a song. Poignant may be the word for your talented voice and impeccable guitar skills but i have had the fortune to know your value as an inspirational songwriter and performer for decades now ! You would be proud to know that at one concert in Seattle, maybe Moore theater or Paramount I was shown the door just cuz I wanted to get nearer the stage to see your sexiness up close...; - ) All in fun !! But let me say you have inspired me to follow my hobby as an (amateur) performer as well as you have touched my soul with your performances and talent over your years of work, THANK YOU !!!! The world is a MUCH MORE beautiful, emotional, deep, empathetic and amazing place with you in it !!!! God Bless you, Love, Gav
Thank you for all your wonderful work over the years . I lived at 91 e 3rd st #24 after you in the 80 " s but did not find a copy of"Cover girl" in the garbage until about 10 yrs ago . Now I have "most " of the cds , you are the best ." A few small repairs is brilliant "and its mixed by Bob ,Nice . I love you ,Best NickH
In Nottingham UK I saw you as support for Runrig. Have been a fan since that evening, I hope you are well and enjoying your life and continue to sing and play the music, lots of kisses.
Love you Shawn! You are my favorite songwriter!!!! I remember first seeing you perform at the Bluebird Cafe! I was hooked after that! One of the most magical nights during Tin Pan South. This album and steady on changed the way I write songs! Thank you for performing for us. And thank you for signing my guitar with Mary Chapin in Kansas City last October! The one that you signed at the Bluebird Cafe was stolen and having the opportunity to have you sign it again, was a dream come true!
Oh wow Shawn Colvin, can't believe it,I love you so much.Never forget the first time I found an album of yours in a record store that jumped out to me A Whole New you,it so echoed what was going on for me.been a fan ever since.Come to the UK please !!! :) thank you so much for doing this

Wonderful. Always love Shawn's voice- and her playing I've always tried to emulate. Still have the "Steady On" and "Fat City" tab books she signed for me 😎
Thank you! I was scheduled to see you in Homer NY in a couple of weeks. It is a rainy Sunday here and it looks like I have several videos to catch up on so this will be a good day. I will see you in person next spring.
Shawn, Thank you so much for posting this special piece of music. This particular cover you did on Fat City is my favorite professional cover of all time. You nailed it. The alternative tuning and timing are challenging, but I'll get it someday☺. Be well. Rich
I think she’s in open G (DGDGBD) , Capo 2nd fret. So the first chord is the tonic (A in this case), which she plays with a “suspend and resolve” around the major 7th. She does this by fretting the 2nd string 3rd fret with her index finger, and doing the hammer-on business on the 4th string 4th fret (middle) and 5th fret (ring). On the album she’s got the capo V, but her voice has lowered and it’s probably not warmed up either.
This was the first Shawn Colvin Album I got into...still love it! Remember the video for "Round of Blues?" I had such a crush on her. Shawn if you read this I would love to see your hands on the guitar, not like I'll be able to figure it out, no idea what tuning this is in! Still you're a great guitar player so I like to see your hands.
Fantastic! Shawn, I've been listening to your music for many, many years but only just thought of looking you up on youtube. I'm a bit late to the party, so now have a bit of catching-up to do on these videos ! P.S. I see you had a photo-bomber on the stairs at 2:31, lol :-)
Awesome… You are so talented. I’ve seen you live twice. Eugene, Or and Corvallis, Or. strange thing is I think we were on the freeway between NY and (Indiana?) You were, like me catching a bite to eat behind a gas station/truck stop. My husband eating subway sandwitch. If it was in fact you we chatted about music and weather and I didn’t ask if it was you. You were driving a small pickup with a trailer type camper. It was very secure looking rig, tho not brand new. I dunno, I thought I saw Bob Dylon once at a freeway stop…So could be I’m just weird.
hey Shawn-I love pink, yellow, dolls and play and sing too-saw you at Britt when baby daughter was 2-saw her above stair dancing behind you!!!!!Mine is 33 with 3 babies 2 boys and a darling little girl -
I love Shawn Colvin. She is good for the universe. She just is.

Such a great song, esp with Shawn's added chord changes, for those of us with precious daughters. And the daughter's cameo is perfect.

Shawn, I love these musical gems you’re sharing with us. Please show your hands so I can learn the chords.
I'm sure there's a way to find the chords online.

Loved seeing your daughter (?) peek around the corner of the stairs midway through...
Fantastic! Shawn, I've been listening to your music for many, many years but only just thought of looking you up on youtube. I'm a bit late to the party, so now have a bit of catching-up to do on these videos ! P.S. I see you had a photo-bomber on the stairs at 2:31, lol :-)
