What did SD fans expect? Really? They HAD TO trade Soto (shed salary) for a 1 year rental? He is going to be REALLY HARD to resign. Sure Soto is generational talent, but now SD can plan for this year and moving forward better, rather than trading Soto at the trade deadline which is hit or miss and you'd be lucky to get a haul like this because teams know you are even more desperate get whatever you can for him. King is a BEAST, Thorpe may be a top tier starter someday soon?... And Britto was lights out end of last season. Call me in one year... I think SD got more than the Yankees wanted to give.
@@bchillbong-uf2io I meant it will be hard for yankees or any team to resign him, he is a one year rental, you can't get a ton for that no matter how good the dude is.
As a Padre fan I can tell you that Grisham DOES NOT help a team much other than Defense and he's been so bad with the bat that I've wanted him GONE for a long time. See ya!
He’s been so good with other teams and he plays. Most of his games and there no reason to say he won’t continue to do that here in 🗽. We will add more arms to our bullpen and this is gon be a dog fight for the east
Does anyone else look at the Yankees projected lineup and think it's not that good(as in elite)? Like Judge and Soto are incredible, and Gleyber and Rizzo are above average, but the rest? LeMahieu is washed and coming off several bad years and is not the same guy he was in 2019/2020. Stanton is injury prone and even when he does play, he's not worth his salary for a DH these last 2 years. Verdugo has been pretty average the last couple of years and is not the guy who was the headliner of that Mookie Betts trade. Volpe had a nice 23 Doubles and 21 HRs in his debut season, but other than that, pretty horrid offensive slash line. I'm not too sure on Wells, but it seems both catchers are not assets in the hitting department. In terms of bench pieces, neither Oswaldo Cabrera or Trent Grisham can hit, so like... am I missing something? Like I'm not saying it's a horrible offense cause that's impossible with that top level talent, but it's definitely not a Top 5 offense and probably not even Top 10 for the matter. Soto helps bring this offense from below average to average, but the depth of the lineup is definitely weak.
For me it really depends on how certain pieces end up performing. If Torres hits like he did last year (or better, assuming he doesn’t get dealt somewhere) and if Rizzo goes back to being what he was before the concussion then they’re both really solid. I also think LeMahieu will most likely bounce back and be at least a .280 batter. The second half of last season he was in the mid .270’s (.272 I think) and he was coming back off injury, he’s not really young but I think the bat to ball skill is still there. If those three all hit well and then Judge can stay healthy and Soto does what he did last year (or better) then I’d say that’s a very good top half. I think (and hope) Volpe will continue to improve with the bat and Verdugo is pretty decent for a lower half of the order type of bat. If Wells hits league average and plays good defense that’s just fine considering he’s a catcher, and I believe he is more of an offensive catcher than many others. That leaves I believe one spot left in the lineup which will be Stanton (when he’s not hurt, maybe 50 games 😅) but he’s just such a strikeout machine and he never has good at bats. It’s either a homerun or a 3 to 4 pitch strikeout with him. He never makes the pitcher work for an out. Dominguez should be healthy again at some point around mid season in the summer and he seems to be a potent bat over a very small sample size but he would be a welcome addition. I don’t remember if Peralta and Peraza (was that their names?) are still with the team but they’re young and could develop. Overall, if guys contribute like they’re capable of then it could be a very strong lineup, but if they don’t it could be awful. I wouldn’t say the Rangers had an elite lineup, but they got production from important pieces at important times and that was good enough. I’m much more worried about starting pitching at this point. We lost Severino, German, King, and Brito from a rotation that was already kinda short on consistent pieces who could actually make a start every fifth day. Right now I’m struggling to think of who would be in the rotation next season. Cole, Schmidt, Rodon (assuming he’s actually healthy, but I was very unimpressed with what I saw last year) and I don’t know who else. Even if they sign Yamamoto, who’s gonna be the fifth starter?
Regardless of end of season record the Padres had a better team where I believe every main starter played better than every main starter on the Yankees. And had way better pitching. So why would the Yankees be better with a couple of plucked players from the Padres and once again weaker starting pitching? Soto will probably get his stats but it probably won’t lead to team success as its shown for the majority of his career
Just watch this dude play, he isnt clutch, he will put up numbers but Padres failed last year because they couldnt hit in big spots and he was part of that.
I would say it’s possible but also not a huge deal if he doesn’t. I’d rather him hit second where that high OBP can be made the most of. I would prefer him hitting in front of Judge so some of the would-be solo HR’s can be converted into 2 run HR’s. If anything maybe slot Verdugo in at 2 and bump everyone else down one. Verdugo doesn’t have the best OBP but it’s serviceable and his average was decent so I’d say he gets on base a fair amount. Maybe Torres at 2 but I’m not sure if Torres is still with the Yankees come the beginning of this season. If he is then he’s better in that slot than Verdugo probably but I think they might end up using him as trade bait for someone else. Who else? I have no idea honestly because I don’t know who is still on the market as a trade option but there just seems to be a lot of talk around him being on the block.
Grisham hit under .200 (Mendoza Line) the last two seasons. No amount of nonsense about elite fielder can overcome that in your lineup. Only good for defensive replacement late in games.
What did you expect? Really? They HAD TO trade Soto (shed salary) for a 1 year rental? He is going to be REALLY HARD to resign. King hasn't thrown more than 160 innings in a season EVER. This is a TERRIBLE trade for the Padres. Higgy is old and below average, Vasquez and Brito are AAAA level pitchers, not true MLB talents. Thorpe, even though he's dominated the minors, is still an unknown at the MLB level. This trade is so lopsided its not even funny 🤣
They’re moving ONE season of a player and could only deal with teams able to pay him 30 million next year. It’s a depth move….King and Thorpe are VERY intriguing. Of course they’re ?? That’s what you get in prospect trades. Bringing up Higgy is idiotic, he’s a throw in. Yankees got one season of a super expensive bat. Nothing wrong with the trade,
King threw 161 innings in 2018. So you can put your all caps away. Higashioka was traded for Trent Grisham, not Soto. Thorpe would have one of the best breaking balls in major league baseball if he was called up tomorrow. Vasquez and Brito are both swing men with quality big league time, high upside and significant years of control. Not sure if you're aware, but the Padres lost 4 starting pitchers to free agency and getting 4 cheap, controllable quality arms takes a lot of pressure off of the search to replace those 4 starting pitchers. Hell, Michael King is pretty much a direct upgrade to Nick Martinez for less money than Martinez got.
MLB trade values rejected this trade because it was too lopsided in SD's favor, with Soto making $33M and only having one year left getting 4 cost controlled young guys who have starter potential is a W as much as it sucks to trade a perennial all star in soto. After Machado and Bogerts contracts there was no way they were going to be able to resign him. I personally would choose Soto over Machado or X but it is what it is.
And then trent too omg were done this 2024 season last place on our division , no closer and nick martinez our best reliver gone wtf? We still have machado, tatis, kim and sanchez lets hope they carry the team
