I was told by a paint store manager, that when in doubt of trying to have a color transition from one room to another. Always choose a shade of green. Their explanation was that every flower has a green stem & leaves, no matter what color of the flower, so you just need to find the correct shade of green!
Congrats on the kitchen remodel! That room you found underneath the kitchen would be what Italians call 'la cantina'. It's the place where homemade wine is stored, those jugs are demi-johns for wine, cured meat would hang from the rafters like prosciutto and sausage and also storage for different types of produce. Almost every Italian home would have a Cantina!
I love Julie’s indefatigable spirit. I also married a Brit, and I was by default perceived as the “enthusiast” of the family, but I think Julie is a gift to her family-a breath of fresh air. I enjoy these AV videos and the Mapperton ones, too.
As an Australian, it would be even more of a joy to wander through those antiques and salvage yards as we just don't really have anything like that here
Oh, Julie- this is one of my favorite story lines on TH-cam…your Italian renovation! I always get excited about the updates! And I just love your choices. It would have been so easy to make everything look “brand new”, but you stayed so true to the culture and style, while also making it feel fresh and updated. Well done!
The cellar is surely yours, wow. It's like getting a bonus room you didn't know about. All that furniture too.. imagine how good it could look once renovated! You must have felt like an archaeologist haha
The kitchen is going to look great. Just keep in mind that the carrara will stain if you get tomato/beetroot/oil/wine on it. There are some sealers that you can use, but often Italians just let life happen, and it will just tell a story. That cantina is a fabulous find. If it were yours, I would consider if access from the house could be possible.
At last we get to see your kitchen updates on your channel!.......I get frustrated when you post Instagram updates only, when I prefer watching your TH-cam channel.....bring on more please! It is going to be amazing 🎉
The floor I chose for my remodeled kitchen was an Italian porcelain tile that mimicked slate and I absolutely love it. And I too looked for old tiles for my back splash, but as I live in the United States those amazing tiles you can find in Europe are just not available. I looked on the internet for old Canal House delft tiles from the Netherlands and found so many I just loved. However, I just couldn’t afford them. So I found someone who decorated modern tiles and had her copy the antique time design. The difference was $300.00 vs $7000.00. The new tiles don’t have that more primitive rough edges, but my husband is an engineer. They seem to all be obsessed with level and 90 degree angles. Lol it all worked out for the best.
I love watching your Italian house renovations. I cannot believe that basement area you found and I hope it belongs to you. How would you access it? Is there a door in your house or an entry door outside the house? The kitchen is where everyone will gather so I imagine you'll need a table big enough for your family and a few guests. Maybe a couple of comfortable chairs near the far end of the room. Malcolm has a lovely sense of humor and style. So exciting!
Discovering that cellar was crazy, you've had the house for a few years and it's been there the whole time?! It's like discovering a secret cave of treasures or something! So cool
That marble sink is AMAZING !!! Your cellar is a fantastic bonus space as well. Great video. I love traveling vicariously through your channel. Grazia mille 💖
Wow,I wonder if the steps up from the cantina end up coming up into your house?! Remember to put in more electric outlets in the new kitchen than you ever think you’ll need!
I love all your choices. That shop was just out of this world. Those terracotta pots! The paint sample shown was more of an olive, I thought, rather than a light sage/aqua. However, maybe that’s just the way it came across on screen. All looks great. Very exciting plans!
I'm laughing a little because in showing the tiles, Malcolm said "splashback, for American people" and Julie was so busy cooking she didn't notice... but from the Americans here, it's "backsplash." 😘 You will never, never ever get tired of the sage green paint. I look forward to seeing the finished kitchen and finind out whether any parts of the current one will be kept.
Malcolm @ 14:13 referred to “splashback” U.K. but then qualified “backsplash” for U.S. The two terms are interchangeable depending on whether you’re a Brit or an American.
Hello Julie, you don’t have to dig up the old kitchen tiles, just put the new tiles on top of the old ones. If you have any doors at ground level, all you have to do is call in a carpenter to ‘shave’ ( shorten ) shorten the length. We’ve done the same in our Home in Italy and it has worked out perfectly ! Less costly and less messy…..good luck.
Oh my gosh that discovery of the cellar!! How incredibly exciting! I can't wait to watch the journey of the kitchen remodel and I simply have to visit that place with all the terra cotta pots and the tiles even if I can't afford anything :) Those pots are so expensive here in the US. Thank you so much for sharing your little Italian house with us.
Can’t wait to see the new kitchen, loved how you made us feel we were hanging out with you in the room and spoke to us directly in the camera with all the joyous details! Julie your enthusiasm for life is heavenly! 🎉 So Happy for you - I swear I could smell the aromatic risotto cooking. Enjoy always your Malcom collaboration.
Been so looking forward to the kitchen renovation - so exciting! I would definately put at least one sofa in there. And that cellar - OMG! - would make a great cosy candle-lit dining space. Can't wait for updates...
Love Malcom. Really must have him more. Such a great find for your projects. I absolutely am in love with the tiles and herringbone pattern. Sink looks warm and inviting. So excited to see what the end result will be. Lovely video. Risotto looks yummy. Thank you Julie. 😊❤❤
Dear Julie, I think you are a breath of fresh enthusiastic air on TH-cam! Love your Italian house and kitchen renovation. Malcolm is wonderful and I am addicted to Mapperton too. If you haven't seen it guys, check it out!
Yes that's your cantina!❤ I've heard stories all my life about my great grandmother and the cantina..I think it's a normal part of the home and so what's in there must be considered yours with your property. The wine was stored in the cantina. What a wonderful thing to find!! The treasures in there will be a lovely addition to your home.. Thanks for the trip choosing the gorgeous tiles and sink!
Julie,, my new apartment has a stone tile floor in the kitchen. It is FREEZING COLD all the time, even on NC 80 degree plus days! The suggestion to put heating under the floor is a really good one, I think. This floor is miserable on my bare feet in the middle of the night and on the way in for breakfast. Awful! Those "big things" are called damigiana..carboys or demijohns in english and theres either wine or oil in those!you have found a cantina! What a find!! Thankyou for lovely video.
Love the sink, floor tiles and backsplash tiles. Hopefully you’ll seal the marble as it stains easily. What an exciting find in the cellar. Hopefully it’s yours and you can do something with it. Happy new year Julie and Malcolm 🎆🎉🎊😍😘
Thank you so much for this channel! I´m from Finland and have been binge watching your programmes for days now an I find them so fascinating and interesting. It´s been a dream of mine always to visit these places and houses and now I can, I´m so happy so many thanks to you Julie for making this a possibility for us all.
We have used this on our worktops as it will be our last do over at our age. We were very fortunate to source it in large slabs made to size for a really great price. A kitchen to suit all tastes that will last through the ages as our family will always live in it. 👍💗
Those large bottles in the kitchen basement can be DIY silvered inside like an patinaed aged mirror...and the turned into lamps..it will really make them pop...good luuk to have a beautiful kitchen reno😊
I can’t wait to see the final product. I’m thinking about redoing my kitchen, but I live here in Texas. I don’t have access to all the stuff you guys do but it’s going to be wonderful once it’s finished I’m sure.!!
I’m so excited to see this kitchen transformation. Love the items and colors you have chosen. I especially like the blue patterned tiles! I can’t wait to hear if the basement area belongs to you. Keep us posted. Those demijohns are so cool. It’s like having discovered your own treasure trove of goodies down there. Happy New Year, Julie. ❤
Just SWOONING over your tile choices! BEAUTIFUL! SOOO perfect for an Italian kitchen! And that fabulous basement! WOW! Hope it IS yours to do with as you choose! Can hardly wait until that kitchen is ready to reveal! Julie, your enthusiasm is so catching! I am so happy for you! Great video!
I just love this journey! Yay! Charming dinner set and warming my heart with the special attention to letting us be apart of the toast, Salute' and Bon Appetite! Thank you for the risotto recipe! :) You are so very thoughtful, special, and kind! Much Love on this January 6, 2024! Happy New Year!
I was thinking, a sink like her grandmother used. ACME came to mind. Beep! Beep! Yes, the company that made everything ordered by W. E. Coyote for many things. The funny part, they still make kitchenettes and other things, not just supply everything for the Loony tunes.
Fabulous! I so wish I could be there. Having renovated multiple homes, I know every salvage, antique shop and repurposing center in New England and once traveled to 6 states over 36 hours to collect building materials. This is amazing! That cellar... Thank you for sharing your design adventures :o)
I'm so excited to see this part of the renovation Julie! I feel like every time I watch your videos I'm transported to my dream world. Thank you so much! Beaucoup Amour! 💞💕
I love that green. It’s beautiful. I love the tiles too. The kitchen is going to be amazing. The cantina is prettier special. Great storage area for Italian goodies.👍🏻❤️🇨🇦
I’m a bit late in viewing and commenting on your updated Italian house video and now that perhaps the biggest project yet is here what fun it’s going to be to watch your kitchen turn into a marvel. Your infectious enthusiasm and energy never stops, Julie. How do you do it? Oh, I know - it’s the spirit of the Italian life and the attitude of if anything goes wrong it can be cured with food and a bottle of wine. And of course Malcolm is there to see the kitchen come alive as you envisioned it. La dolce vita!
I can’t wait to see the final results! It’s going to be gorgeous!! 🤗 I hope that basement is yours. You could put in a beautiful wine cellar down there. 🍷 🍷🍷
Charming choices for the kitchen… and that cantina would be yours, your storage area for food & wine… 🍷 For now, you must have enough on your plate (pun not intended, just a happy accident!) with the kitchen renovation. In time, when you get around to it, perhaps 🤔 consider it a wine cellar as intended. With (of course) some sort of small sitting area & such.
What an exciting find, the cellar, the tiles, the marble! What fun it will be to go through the cellar treasures! Can’t wait to see the kitchen! I know it will be beautiful! All the rooms so far are absolutely gorgeous! Love everything you have done! I am wondering though, is the labor cheap? I want to plan to buy an Italian place, but need to budget for renovations.
Love the sink, but not sure if it's a good fit for a kitchen. Marble stains, and it seems a bit too shallow for washing dishes. I can't wait to see the renovation! ❤
Oh boy, this is going to be fun! Love everything you have picked out so far during the whole project. The tiles and sink will be wonderful. So excited that you have your spectacular finale planned. Enjoy the process❤

For now, you must have enough on your plate (pun not intended, just a happy accident!) with the kitchen renovation. In time, when you get around to it, perhaps 🤔 consider it a wine cellar as intended. With (of course) some sort of small sitting area & such.
This is so exciting!!! My best friend is Juliann and she has the exact enthusiasm you do and she’s Illinois born too. What fun in that tile yard!
A Happy New Year Julie. A great start for the new year in your georgous Italian house.
I love your little Italian house soooo much! ❤
Julie- not sure the bike has been there for 100 years, but wow! What a find!!
If only Meghan could be like Julie. Sei bravissima, Julie!! Saluto from Indonesia!
Oh, everything is perfect! I’m so excited to see what happens with everything!
Yay! Thank you!
I can't wait to see the finished look.
