4:48!!! Oh man after that tasty lick the greatness that keeps me coming back to this video is seeing his deeply blown away and satisfied expression at what this instrument plus his skills are able to create.
He is right when he speaks of the delicate sound of the mandolin and why you would be drawn to that. That aspect of the instrument seems a bit lost with a lot of players today. They want the bark.
I came here to compare tone - because I bought a 50 dollar Harmony mando from 1954, an exact copy of the f-hole Gibson's, which because of the wood quality is louder and more powerful than the real thing. These have a more refined sound, but the magic combo of Adirondack Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and bridge, can not be beaten (ask the Martin CEO). These were considered cheaper woods at the time, but are way superior, now.
They are Gibson. Loyd Loar left Gibson around 1925, not on good terms, to start his own company making electric guitars and 10 string mandolins - which were great but about 20 years too far ahead of their time.
I'd love to know, that last one was insane! I wonder the serial #, 6 away from Thile's but I don't know that one either haha! I think he has two Loar's also
Cool video, but is that couch vinyl? I had a really bad experience with a vinyl strap and a thin nitro finish... now I am getting it buffed out, yuck. Amazing instruments indeed.
@@thomasbrown7328action refers to the height of the strings relative to the fingerboard. Light means they are super close. He probably prefers the strings about a couple thousands of an inch higher. Yea that how they measure them. Crazy right?
I’ve met him in real life, after a Live From Here taping at Town Hall in NYC, as nice of a guy as could be. Super super quick, insanely intelligent but a down to earth guy. Definitely in love with the music
He’s been asked to play mandolin and talk about them on camera how is he self absorbed I bet he did this for free and probably bought a mandolin worth several thousand dollars
This wins TH-cam. No question about it.
Thank you so much for posting these videos.
I'm 6 years late, but I concur lol.

Would love to have one of these one day :). Most beautiful instrument in my opinion.
They are so choice... if you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up!
I think it is totally ridiculous to lust over $250,000 instrument.
@@markgottlieb6775 better than lusting over a $50 instrument ;)
Chris Thile is just so good it is fun to just let it flow!
He’s been a monster player for years and has gotten better with age.
ooooooooooooo TONE ............ and in Chris's hands ..... such beauty
Astounding Talent and ears.

Geepers! He is wonderful
This guy is a freakin mandolin genius. I've been watching him for about a year now . I wish he'd give me lessons.
his are available on Homespun
Anyone know the serial # of the last Loar he plays here? It did stand out, even amongst the other gems 😮🔥
My God!
I like the Virzi Loar better for tone! Mine has the Virzi and its awesome, very refined and elegant sounding.
Just as he switches instruments there's a freaking train going by!
My "problem" started w a '68 lg-0 for $300... this venture is going to take some effort in visualization
I have no comment... I'm that guy with the d 28..... what's better than side by side LL Mandos...
If those are all signed Lohrs in front of him it’s well over 500k sitting there. Damn
He would sound far better on a $50 MANDO than I would with a $50,000 Loyd Loar......
Give him a shoebox and a dental floss string and he'd sound better ;) lol. Not that you're bad of course, but he's just that good lol.

Get a Loar AND a D-28!
That lick at 5:02 is nice
Are these Loar mandolins by Gibson, or a brand of their own?

They take the low end and big volume mandos, because they cut through.
they stopped mid-sentence at the end :( I wonder what he said next
he bought the last one a few weeks later right ?
I'd love to know, that last one was insane! I wonder the serial #, 6 away from Thile's but I don't know that one either haha! I think he has two Loar's also
Go you huskies!
The big instrument in the background is the octave mandola aka mandocello.

cool
4:57- anybody out there know what he means when he says that mando is set up a little too light so it has more to give?
@DEEJMASTER 333 thanks! But what do you mean by action?

There is literally a million pounds worth of mandolins just sitting in front of him.
It will be mine. Oh yes; It will be mine. One day... :-(
What does virzi on a mandolin mean?

Hes so self absorbed.
I've never gotten that impression from any of his interviews or stage banter.
I’ve met him in real life, after a Live From Here taping at Town Hall in NYC, as nice of a guy as could be. Super super quick, insanely intelligent but a down to earth guy. Definitely in love with the music
Huh? There isn't one second of this video that says "self absorbed" to me.
He’s been asked to play mandolin and talk about them on camera how is he self absorbed I bet he did this for free and probably bought a mandolin worth several thousand dollars
He's actually the greatest mandolin player ever and he couldn't care less. He doesn't care about that. He cares about music.
