RAV4 vs CX-5 | 2019 Toyota RAV4 vs 2020 Mazda CX-5 with Jonathan Sewell Sells

  • The Toyota RAV4 is always a top competitor for the Compact SUV Segment. It has seen a drastic boost in sales since it removed the spare tire off the rear gate in 2013. This fifth generation debuted in 2019 and was redesigned to be a little bigger and more rugged. The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is a formidable opponent of the RAV4 especially from 2017 forward. It directly went after the areas of noise and driving dynamics.
    We know that Mazda vehicles are always more fun to drive, but they also wanted to make the experience better by reducing road and wind noise. The Mazda CX-5 does not have as much cargo volume as the Toyota, but it wins with premium interior features and exterior styling.

    Nothing beats Mazda’s soul red crystal. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available on my area when I got mine, they said there’s one in Vancouver. But I cannot wait, it was on December 31st, so I got the summit white. I really don’t mind the colour, now I’m loving it.

      Jonathan Sewell sorry, it’s snowflake white. Lol
      Quick question, does the time matter when oil change or the mileage?

    Great comparison, Jonathan! These are two that will definitely be at the top of our list next year when our lease is up, and I really appreciate your honest review. As you know, we love the RAV4, and have for years. But the Mazda definitely has some points in it's favor as well. Thanks, my friend!

      Thanks Mark! I’m glad this information is helpful. It’s been tough for me to not be a fanboy of Toyota as much as I used to 😂

    The Mazda still looks much better....any particular reason why your client traded the Rav? I’ve read major transmission and fuel issues.

      I’ve heard about the transmission issues. This customer however just wanted something different. She bought a Miata! 😁

    Mazda is the higher quality performance like Porsche, but the rav 4 is more practical, roomy, and a bit better at pump! Toyota warranty rocks!

    Hey! Jonathan is it possible for the 2019 Mazda Cx 5 touring to show you’re speed on the screen?

    • @JSS
      @JSS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can see a digital speed displayed on the windshield with the GT premium package available on Grand Touring and standard above. You can only see the the analog display on the LCD instrument panel.

    Nice comparison. I would like to see a drive comparison. These two SUVs are on my short list. The Rav4 wins easily for utility and cargo. Mazda Cx-5 has best handling and best drive in the class. But there is more to the decision. The Cx-5 is more premium. Stunning exterior with many European looking features on the interior. Real leather seating on the Mazda vs softex on the Rav4. I've sat in both but haven't driven either. The Mazda feels more upscale, the Toyota feels OK with cheaper feeling plastics and knobs. Both feel like they would last. I really want the ventilated seats available on the Mazda. I don't think they are an option on the Rav4. Then there are the available engine upgrades. Mazda Grand Touring Reserve turbo motor vs the Rav4 Hybrid. Both are nice upgrades. The Rav4 has the option of the Qi wireless phone charging. Cx-5 does not. Rav4 has easier to use infotainment, but the Cx-5 infotainment is cooler looking. I don't prefer the piano black trim around the shifter on the Cx-5. The Toyota doesn't have the piano black. The piano black trim looks great in the showroom if not overdone. It looks well done on the Mazda. Still, matte black plastics are better at resisting scratches and hiding dust. Cx-5 has the rear seat release in the cargo area. Rav4 doesn't have it on any trim. Countering that though, I wish Mazda had made the rear seat headrests flip down when the seats fold. Mazda had this function on the 3rd row seats of the CX-9. I don't like how the front seats need to be scooted forward to fold the rear seats down. It's an oversight by Mazda. Hopefully they fix that on the next generation. Honda had to Rav4 seats don't need to scoot forward to fold down the rear seats. There is enough room. Sure you can take the headrests out on the Cx-5, but it doesn't look good. Still a tough choice overall along with with competition from the Subaru Forester (best visibility, and great real world gas mileage) and Honda CR-V (most comfortable seats in the class and most cargo space).

      I am a new CX5 owner. I got around the piano black material by having it covered with 3M. It wouldn't scratch now but still shows dust. I am thinking now a fake carbon fibre job may be even better. Infotainment is a learning curve but I like it more than having to touch the screen. The knobs work great and you don't even move your hand much while you rest it on the fixed arm rest. Back up camera is a hit or miss. It has 360 view in my Signature trim, but for some odd reason, standard back up cam is the default view, and I manually select 360 every single time. There is no way to see the side view cams in reverse. Then the resolution is not great. Seats lack under thigh support. Mazda has failed miserably to place a 5 or a maximum 10$ rubber cover on the dead pedal. This silly thing has been going on for almost 10 years or more. Ride is comfortable as long as you don't hit sharp bumps. But I do like the car very much. Amazing overall.

    People say rav 4 ugly bad noisy etc but in 2020 they sold it more then 600 k in US. It’s just behind Ford F - 150, RAM and Silverado.

    • @kr9181
      @kr9181 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JSS I’m not big fan of crossovers - prefer big American and German sedans, trucks and truck based suvs. All depends on your budget. But for budget crossover I will choose rav 4 hybrid. Otherwise bmw x 3. Once again all depends how you stand financially.
