I don't see the problem, the law is that trailers over a certain weight require working brakes. They stopped you because it looked overweight, an absolutely reasonable thing to do, once they established that it wasn't, they merely made you aware of the law and it could have ended there. If they couldn't establish that it was below the 750kg at the roadside, they would have taken you to a weighbridge (or used portable scales ) to determine it. There was no need to be awkward. Overweight unbraked trailers cause very serious accidents, as they "overtake" the towing vehicle pushing it sideways and flipping it over. A Jimny has a total gross towing capacity of around 2.8 tonnes btw
Should have just escorted him to a DVSA check site. They would have weighed it properly and inspected it for compliance. Bit difficult to make assumptions on the roadside about its weight.
The police can stop you at any time for any reason even if its to check things or would you rather they just let thing go they have concerns about about ... nothing wrong with with the way the police acted ... if you don't like the rules don't drive
It’s strange that the police don’t bother to inspect the trailer until later in the interaction but in fairness they do seem like they’re more interested in preventing an accident through education rather than trying to prosecute which is commendable. Prevention is better than cure and all that. The driver incriminating himself is a good lesson in why people must always be careful what they say to police.
He doesn't know his rights, because he said 700kg was the weight when a trailer required brakes. If he overloads the trailer, he runs the risk of losing control of the vehicle. He obviously overloads the trailer on a regular basis and has been lucky not to be caught.
If it was a commercial trailer such as IW, they would know that the trailer would have been manufactured to the appropriate standards, so no, they probably wouldn't have stopped him, unless there was something indicating faulty brakes etc.
Why all the comments saying the police are at fault? They have many jobs to do and one of them is to keep us safe on the UK roads, if this vehicle went out of control killing your child would you be of the same opinion? if it was me on the receiving end I would have just complied with what they were telling me and not assume that I know the law because he clearly doesn't, the trailer looks like it is at least up to the 750kg weight limit empty and no matter what was in it it would very likely be over weight, well and telling the officers that the VIN plate fell off? If I was that officer I would have impounded the vehicle till he could prove its identity as I would consider it stolen until proved otherwise, going back to the trailer construction law, if brakes are fitted which they clearly were they should work correctly and the tow hitch was not of the correct type to allow this. E&OE.
Job to do??? MAYBE they research the laws first. Its a basic trailer no brakes needed. This PC nobby also stopped him on double Yellow lines DANGEROUS TO OTHERS THEMSELVES THE VICTIM THEY HARRASS.TIME PLACE. WANKER BOY AND HIS GIRLY SIDE KICK ARE TALKING ABOUT GUESSES...NOT FACTS
EXACTLY, I noticed that straight away, they should be trained before being unleashed on the public. If he's not sure he should do his job properly, he just wanted to show his colleague, didn't want to take the time to be sure, using indirect threats, we can do this that and the other. NEVER tell the Police anything because they will use it against you.

Ke'mon man knows his rights!!

He said you’ve got a Jimny so towing capacity about 4.5 tonnes 🤣. Needs to go back and do his homework before stopping people with trailers.
Leave him alone. Good on you Anthony
If it was a big Ivor Williams they wouldn't even look at you. The checker plate is making it look heavy. At least you knew all the answers. 😊

He's just trying to impress his little Polly Plod.
A big trailer , it’s not that big ! Police are so anal . Nice trailer build 👍
A very talented man
