It only took you approximately 15 seconds from the time you actually started your diagnostic in order to make an initial hypothesis. I am extremely impressed with your diagnostic skills. The logical steps you used to diagnose the issue were spot on perfect. It is a common problem on aging Mazda's for the physical switch inside the TRS to wear out. Going from park to drive and vice versa is the most used gear selection so naturally the contact points wear out fastest for those selections. The shifter arm is physically linked to the TRS via a gear select cable. Since it's all physical it's prone to wear. Eventually they have ignition switch issues after about 20 years too. Great call on trying to jiggle the shift selector while in park too because sometimes the lever actually gets loose in that position and will not depress the button for the interlock switch. The interlock is a physical button that the shift arm depresses. So if you get a no-crank no-start while in both park and neutral then the interlock switch or ignition switch could be a culprit. Since it did start in neutral you ruled that out immediately. It would have been nice if you verbally expressed your thought process so others could learn why you were taking the few steps to make a diagnosis. I mean I know why you did it that way but others might not. Fantastic logical diagnostic. Bravo. Now the owner can put on that water pump pulley and button everything back up. The timing sounds great too looks like he did a good job on the timing belt.
+DJDevon3 Thanks man, I told you there wasn't much to show here :) I've had this same issue on my '89 Mazda MPV; had to disassemble, re-lube and re-seal the P-N switch three separate times now....it's a miracle it still works!!
Thanks for the video. I just came back from Autozone after getting my check engine light checked. My 99 626 transmission has started to slip like crazy!
Quick tip for wiggling the shifter. If it is an interlock issue sometimes people can start it by holding the shifter forward or backward while in park. Wiggling it won't accomplish anything on these vehicles because of the design of the interlock system inside the shift lever housing.
Another quality video! It's also nice to other brand tools being used for diag such as your Craftsman meter vs seeing a Fluke and so forth. I use an Actron DVOM and grab the scope if i need better detail.
+dreamer2355 Thanks! Yeah I do love the clamp-style meter for checking amp-draws and basic voltage/resistance checks. As you saw here though the "Peak" function could be better designed on the Craftsman, since you can't manually set the range and it just buries the scale and beeps at you...actually a test light would have been even better, but wasn't as easy to set up inside the car while cranking the key.
Nice quick diagnosis! most auto ranging meters don't like autorange and min/max. next time try selecting a manual range while using min/max. I bet you'll have better results
Definitely was not that ol girls first rodeo for sure! Looks like it is time for some house wiring, wingnuts and a toggle screwed to the dash lol , BTW How many HP was the red strut brace?
Michael Williams I just get in those cars and let the rev limiter bounce off 4 grand and dump the clutch just to feel what it is like to be a real race car driver! Then I run around all day making blow off valve noises and pretend I am shifting....
It's a92 mazda best running little car I've ever owned I just can't bring myself to sale it I've had it for 12yrs I also own an eclipse and that's what I drive now but my mazda is like a family member so I hope I can fix it.
I have this same car. I was driving home on the freeway and it just shut off and has no electric power to anything. I changed a 10 fuse inside the cab and and it started. Shortly after I mean minutes it died and back to no electric power and no crank. Could you tell me where to or what to start with to fix
Good quick diagnosis! The guy owns two cars that are tagged from different states? Whenever I see a vehicle like that I'm always hesitant to get involved because it's obvious that the wrong person has been poorly maintaining that car, and when another totally unrelated problem pops up shortly after, the guy will think it is your fault. Chris.
+shadowdog500 This dude was a referral from a good friend. I always try to make it clear which problem I'm chasing, and other issues are a separate case. Of course you have to guarantee your work, which earns customer trust :)
Hey I have a 2002 protege5 it won't start only click once I put new battery new starte new neutral safety switch new starter switch and nothing have same problem what could be my problem?
HAD the same problem.. seem that there is a switch, tied to transmission, for the park. I had to slam it into park to get it working. Battery and alternator checked out OK.

I need someone to help me please!!!! My ex-boyfriend did something to my 92 Mazda protégé and he ripped the pages out that I need to fix it, there is no spark, new battery, fuses and coil seem to b fine!!! Please can anyone help me????
He probably unplugged something like the distributor or ignition coil. You can always take it to a trusted mechanic and make your ex pay for the repairs!
I wish it was that easy he is very childish. is the ignition coil under the dash? I hate anything to do with electrical and he knows that my biggest fear is being shocked but i'll do whatever it takes to get my car going.
DUDE, Im shooting ahorror film, Killer Klown Karnival !! I think you would be perfect to star in it ! Let me know if you are interested thanks for the vids

motoYam82 You never know when one of your videos will help someone. Better to have it out there than not. The more the better.
DJDevon3 my protege used to start in neutral , not anymore..should I replace the Park Neutral switch ?

100HP for the brace and another 50FT TQ for the weight reduction being the timing cover not used.
+South Main Auto Repair I'm gonna send you another Ford hat. :P
Michael Williams I love them just for a place to put your hand instead of on a hot engine. They make leaning into an engine bay easier.

Lol probably at least 20 more h.p. since it was the red option.
I so how did you resolve that? I got some pretty useful tips in the video, thank you for that. But did you guys find a solution to the problem?
Very good Ivan as that one was quick....
Well done Ivan 👍

I've got the same problem. Following this thread
Same issue. Right after exiting the freeway. Any leads?
@@EliHernandezy808 it’s the fuse on the inside of the car. I forget what one but it is a 10 amp duse
@@EliHernandezy808 I replaced the fuse and right away it’s back to normal
Another good video .
I like your video

What happens when you start in Neutral and then put it in park?
I have not tried that in mine. I'll try starting in neutral and see what happens.
The name aka (PRNDL) switch pronounced prindle in transmission shop world. Let's us know what the problem was with the mini coop.
I have the same issue except it's a manual transmission
What was the problem ???
This is 6 years later... What if it's a manual? Sometimes it cranks but sometimes not. When it does crank it doesn't start...
new subsciber great video 👍
2003protege5 mazda wagon will start an grank but won't start any ideas

hi, i have a similar problem with my mazda, but mind takes long to start its a Manuel thought
Did you ever figure out what it was?
Отличная и быстрая диагностика. Только я не понял откуда у тебя взялась распечатанная схема?
С уважением, Сергей.
+Сергей Клепицкий Я заранее распечатал схему на ...бесплатно :)
